  1. Hi Rick,

My dad was describing his search for this exact scene, and I found your post while we were talking about it. I think I have a good candidate for you to investigate:

I mostly used google’s browser-based globe view to search the Santa Monica Mountains area. I figured that while the lakes may be gone, they’re going to leave permanent effects – disturbed vegetation, gravel, sand, a wider bottom. And I was keeping an eye out for the mountain above the upper lake – it has a big cut from a road in it.

The area that eventually caught my eye had a road running through it ‘Trancas Lakes Drive’. Odd name – plural lakes – for a road with a mere pond by it. Searching for ‘Trancas Lakes’ in google images, the top hit was a photo that looked very relevant. The title and date suggest to me that whoever took it was likely familiar with the introduction to this movie and went there to recreate it. And you could see behind them the berm of the upper lake, and the mountain with the big horizontal cut.

Another thing I looked at was ‘Historic Aerials’ – search for ‘trancas lakes drive’; click on the ‘aerials’ tab, and select 1967, and sure enough, in that photo you can see two lakes here, a wide, short one up top and a skinny long one below. You have the road over the upper dam, descending the left bank to the lower road where Willie hops off the back of the dairy farmer’s truck. (In 1956 there is only the upper lake, and in 1952, just a valley.)

It seems like the golf course of that country club eliminated nearly all traces of the lower lake, but you can still see some traces in the water traps. The place now looks abandoned, but unfortunately still fenced off.

  2. Hi, Lindsay! Please see my message on your Facebook page.
I had no idea who you were, until I was doing research on the shooting location of one of my favorite movies, “The Illustrated Man” (1969). The critics hated it, but it is one of my favorites.
My father took me to see the movie when I was in grade school. I have always thought the movie was magical and supernatural, and became obsessed with it over the years.
Anyway, part of the movie was filmed at Paramount Ranch. The movie begins with a scene by a lake. I am obsessed with finding the shooting location by the lake.
Sadly, it appears most of the people who made the movie are deceased. I’ve scoured the Internet, articles, and books, and there is mention of the lake, but no name. I’ve consulted with Park Rangers and offered to pay anyone who can help me find it, but no one seems to know anything about it. One Ranger thought the “lake” might be dried up now.
While doing research on streams and lakes surrounding Paramount Ranch, I came across Malibu/Malibou Lake as a possible location. I know it has been used in other movies. That’s when I saw your photo by the Malibou Lake sign. (“Who is that knock-out beauty?”)
I am planning to make an expedition to Malibou Lake and surrounding areas to do my own search. I may rent a pilot and helicopter for a birdseye view, but Google Maps Satellite and Terrain may be good enough.
If you are interested in my expedition or search, please let me know. I would be willing to compensate you for your valuable time. I apologize if my offer of money offends you! Finally, you may rest assured, I am not a stalker! Lol.

  3. Find the pictures of the house that Sissy Spacek had on (Old) Topanga Canyon Road, it was broken into once and her 12 string guitar was stolen. After that she would have Bill Paxton house sit for her and Jack Fisk. She and Jack left the Topanga area in 1981 after daughter Schuyler was born. Later they bought condos at 830 Hanover St in Pacific Palisades I have these pictures.
