Home Restaurant from “Raines”

Home Restaurant from Raines-1200805

Every once in a while a show comes along that immediately hooks me.  Such was the case with Raines, an extremely short-lived police procedural boasting a scant seven-episode run.  I was unaware of the NBC series at the time of its original airing in March 2007.  In fact, I only learned of it this past October while doing research for my post on High Tower, the iconic Hollywood Hills campanile from Dead Again that, as I learned via IMDB, also had a prominent role in Raines’ pilot.  I was thrilled to discover that the series is available to stream on Amazon and quickly downloaded the inaugural episode.  Though I intended to only scan through it to make screen captures for my post, I instantly became intrigued, mainly due to the locations – one of which was an absolutely charming outdoor eatery that I fell in love with upon sight.

[ad]

The Raines pilot centers around the murder of beautiful young call girl Sandy Boudreau (Alexa Davalos).  The lead cop assigned to solve her killing is Michael Raines (Jeff Goldblum), an eccentric LAPD detective with a unique method of talking to the dead victims he is investigating in order to close cases.  (No, he doesn’t actually “see dead people” – the apparitions he encounters are merely figments of his imagination.)  In one of the episode’s flashback scenes, Sandy is shown dining at an adorable café where she meets, and winds up dining with, a married man named Harry Tucker (Jeff Perry).  One look at the restaurant’s unique signage reading “THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME” and idyllic front patio and I was smitten.  I promptly halted my research on High Tower and instead switched my efforts to tracking the eatery down.  Thankfully, a quick Google search of the terms “Home,” “restaurant,” and “Los Angeles” led me to the right spot – Home Restaurant at 1760 Hillhurst Avenue in Los Feliz.  I ran right out to stalk it shortly thereafter.

Home Restaurant was originally established in 1997 by the husband-and-wife team of Aram and Rose Serobian.

More than twenty years later, the place is still going strong – though eagle-eyed viewers will notice the signage has changed a bit since Raines aired just over a decade ago.

Home Restaurant from Raines-1200795

Home has become such a success that the Serobians, who lived above the restaurant on the property’s second floor during its early days, have since opened two sister eateries – a second Home at 2500 Riverside Drive in Silverlake and H Coffee, a café situated next to the original Home at 1750 Hillhurst Avenue.  (The couple just recently closed the latter to undergo a renovation and rebranding.  It will open in January as Guest House.)

Nestled in amongst a canopy of trees, Home’s setting is absolutely magical.

Home Restaurant from Raines-5096

In a 2016 interview with the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office of Public Engagement, Aram explained that he landed on his eatery’s name because “The word ‘home’ means everything in my culture, and almost everyone holds that idea and concept close to their hearts.  So, I put my own heart and soul into this restaurant and see the customers as guests in my own house.  It’s about feeling welcome and comfortable, being able to get away from the often-hectic nature of Los Angeles.  If everyone can walk in and feel like they’re part of a family, even for just an hour, then I know it has been a success.”  Aram can definitely pat himself on the back for a job well done because the restaurant truly does have the feel of a home – albeit the home of someone with impeccable taste in décor.

Home Restaurant from Raines-5103

Situated around a sparkling fountain, with furniture made of reclaimed wood, the patio is especially inviting.

Home Restaurant from Raines-5099

The restaurant also boasts an indoor dining room for those who do not want to eat amongst the elements, but, in my opinion, the patio is where it’s at.

Home Restaurant from Raines-5100

Though neither the Grim Cheaper nor I are big breakfast people, we were both completely enamored with Home’s fare.  I opted for the cafe’s California Omelette and it was hands-down one of the best omelets I’ve ever had in my life.  The GC selected The All American, with eggs, pancakes, and bacon, and it, too, was fabulous.

Home Restaurant from Raines-5089

Home’s prices are surprisingly reasonable, especially considering the fact that the place is not only a brunch hotspot and hipster haven, but the portion sizes are enormous.

Home Restaurant from Raines-5086

The eatery is also something of a celeb magnet.  Mark Ballas, Kristen Stewart, Katherine Heigl, Sophia Bush, Jon Foster, Rachel Bilson, and Audrina Patridge have all been spotted there.

 Home Restaurant from Raines-5098

Patridge likes the place so much, she even filmed a scene from her short-lived reality series Audrina there.  In Episode 2, she meets with her sister Casey Loza at the restaurant to discuss their parents’ upcoming anniversary party.

Thanks to fellow stalker Ellie I learned that Home was also the spot where Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) met up with Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) at the end of the Season 1 episode of Grey’s Anatomy titled “No Man’s Land,” which aired in 2005.

And in the Season 2 episode of You titled “Just the Tip,” Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) spies on Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) and her friends at Home.

Avalon Hotel Palm Springs from “The Hills”

The Avalon Palm Springs from The Hills-1030549

Sometimes I stalk places unknowingly.  Such was the case with Avalon Hotel Palm Springs, which I visited back in June 2013 when it was known as Viceroy.  I was quite taken with the property’s yellow-hued Old Hollywood Regency-style theme and took a myriad of photographs while there, though I did not plan on blogging about the site because I did not realize it was a filming location.  As it turns out, it is – from one of my favorite shows, no less!  Last week, my good friend Steffi, who lives in Switzerland, randomly messaged me to ask if I had ever stalked Avalon.  She thought I might be interested in doing so being that it was at the hotel that Justin Bobby famously gave his on-again/off-again girlfriend Audrina Patridge a diamond ring in the Season 4 episode of The Hills titled, “I Heidi Take Thee Spencer . . . “  I just about fell out of my chair upon learning the news.  I mean, how did I miss that one?  I immediately headed over to Hulu to re-watch the episode and, sure enough, there was Avalon!  So I decided it was high time I blog about the place.

[ad]

Avalon Hotel Palm Springs was originally built as the Estrella Inn in 1933.  Initially consisting of 13 standalone Spanish-style bungalows, several two-story Mid-Century-esque buildings were added to the property in the 1950s.  Though rather non-descript from the outside . . .

The Avalon Palm Springs from The Hills-1030543

. . . one step through the hotel’s main entrance and you are transported back in time to the days when Garbo, Gable and Gardner ruled Tinseltown.

The Avalon Palm Springs from The Hills-1030545

Avalon’s expansive grounds are characterized by red-roofed bungalows, sprawling lawns, and towering palms.

And, as I mentioned earlier, a lot of yellow.

The Avalon Palm Springs from The Hills-1030575

The site’s distinctive Old Hollywood motif came courtesy of interior designer Kelly Wearstler, who purchased the Estrella in 2001 along with her husband, Brad Korzen, CEO/founder of Viceroy Hotel Group and The Kor Group.  (Kor also owns Avalon Hotel Beverly Hills.)  The couple re-branded and re-styled the inn, opening it as Viceroy Palm Springs in 2003.

The Avalon Palm Springs from The Hills-1030558

Korzen left Viceroy Hotel Group in 2012, but continued to own Viceroy Palm Springs and three years later re-named the property Avalon Hotel Palm Springs.  Despite the name change, Kelly’s unique décor was largely left intact.

The Avalon Palm Springs from The Hills-1030561

Today, the 3.5-acre site boasts 3 pools, meeting and event space, the award-winning Estrella spa (the name is a nod to the hotel’s history), and on-site restaurant Chi Chi.

The thirteen one- and two-bedroom bungalows feature fireplaces, full kitchens, private patios, and, my personal favorite, a “bungalow manager,” to take care of guests’ every need.  Sign me up!

The Avalon Palm Springs from The Hills-1030560

The hotel’s expansive gardens feature fruit trees, aloe and agave plants, and palms, which join the rose bushes and bougainvillea vines to create a green and pink oasis.

The Avalon Palm Springs from The Hills-1030555

The property has long been popular with the Hollywood set.  Back in the Estrella days, luminaries such as Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Joan Crawford, Ann Miller, Bing Crosby, Tyrone Power, William Powell, Desi Arnaz, Lucille Ball, Orson Welles, Lupe Vélez, Elvis Presley, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Errol Flynn were all known to check in.

In more recent years, such stars as Katharine McPhee, Becca Tilley, John Mayer, B.J. Novak, Whitney Port, Lea Michele, Hannah Simone, Stassi Schroeder, Ashley Benson, Troian Bellisario, Jesse Metcalfe, Katy Perry, and my man Matt Lanter have all been spotted on the premises (though many were there attending Coachella parties, not necessarily staying at the hotel).

In “I Heidi Take Thee Spencer . . . ,” which was The Hills’ Season 4 finale, Justin and Audrina headed to Viceroy for a “drama-free” vacay away from their friends.

Though the scenes taking place at the hotel were short, as well as few and far between, quite a lot of the property was shown in the episode, including the front entrance, one of the bungalows, the courtyard, and the gardens.

Screenshot-004088-2

It is while seated next to one of Viceroy’s pools that Justin, in a seeming act of commitment, gave Audrina a gorgeous pavé diamond ring.  (The guy may be a total douche, but he sure has great taste in jewelry.)  The commitment didn’t mean much, though, obviously, as the two were broken up by The Hills’ Season 5 premiere.

Runyon Canyon Park from “The Hills”

P1030749

A few years ago, after my good friend Nat happened to spot Runyon Canyon Park pop up in an episode of fave reality series The Hills, she sent me an email asking if I had ever stalked the place.  And while I had long known that the locale was not only a big-time celebrity hangout, but also a popular filming location, because I am not a fan of hiking (or working out in general, if we are really being honest here), I had never added it to my “To-Stalk” list.  But I assured Nat, who is very much into calisthenic-type activity and who, unlike me does not actually consider walking to Starbucks a form of exercise, that the next time she came to visit, we would definitely hit the place up.  Which is how, bright and early a few Sundays ago, the Grim Cheaper, Nat and I found ourselves in Hollywood about to embark upon a morning hike at Runyon Canyon Park.  I even bought some new workout pants for the occasion!  (Now, shopping – that is definitely a type of exercise that I can get behind!)  Unfortunately for Nat, though, because there did not seem to be any restrooms on the trail and because I had downed a Venti iced latte shortly before arriving there, our trek was pretty short-lived.  See what I mean?  I was just not made for the outdoors.  The GC made fun of me relentlessly while we were hiking, by the way, due to the fact that I was carrying my Louis Vuitton purse.  Men!  I mean, what the heck else was I supposed to do with it?  Leave it in the car?  As if!

P1030753 P1030760

P1030757 P1030758

The 160-acre parcel of land that now makes up Runyon Canyon Park was originally named “No Man’s Canyon”.  It came to be known by its current moniker thanks to one of its early owners, coal baron Carman Runyon, who used the sprawling site as a hunting and riding venue.  In 1929, the grounds were purchased by Irish tenor John McCormack, who had a large mansion built on the premises which he dubbed “San Patrizio”, in honor of St. Patrick.  When A&P Supermarket heir Huntington Hartford bought the estate in 1942, he renamed it “The Pines” and commissioned architect Frank Lloyd Wright to build a pool house on the site.  Hartford’s friend Errol Flynn was a frequent guest at the pool house and is rumored to have thrown some wild parties there.  Sadly, when Jules Berman, a wealthy liquor importer, purchased the property in the late 1960s, he demolished “The Pines”.  The Lloyd Wright-designed pool house was subsequently destroyed by a fire in 1972.  All that remains of the two historic structures are some ruins located near the Fuller Avenue entrance to the park.  So incredibly sad!  In 1984, the City of Los Angeles stepped in and acquired the vacant acreage, subsequently turning it into a public park, as it remains to this day.

P1030754 P1030755

P1030762 P1030766

Thanks to Runyon Canyon Park’s proximity to Hollywood and the stunning views that it boasts (which you can see above), the place has long been a stomping ground of the rich and famous.  Just a few of the stars who have been spotted working out there include Gilles Marini, Famke Janssen, Eriq La Salle, Josh Hartnett, Hayden Panettiere, Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel, Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kathy Griffin, Scarlett Johansson, Josh Duhamel, Kellan Lutz, Ryan Gosling, Dane Cook, Orlando Bloom, Sheryl Crow, Ashley Tisdale, Haylie Duff, Anne Hathaway, Ali Fedotowsky, Amanda Bynes, Matthew Perry, Ali Larter, Joe Jonas, Amanda Seyfried,  Adrian Grenier, Natalie Portman, and Chris Pine.  And while we did not see any celebs during our hike, when fellow stalker Lavonna was in town this past November, she spotted B.J.Novak, aka Ryan Howard from The Office, walking the trails.

ScreenShot3824 ScreenShot3825

And in the Season 4 episode of The Hills titled “Who To Choose?”, Lauren Conrad and Audrina Patridge discussed Audrina’s love life while on a hike at Runyon Canyon.  And I could swear that the park showed up in yet another episode of the series in which Lauren and Whitney were shown working out, but I cannot seem to find it anywhere.

ScreenShot3834 ScreenShot3835

In the Season 4 episode of Seinfeld titled “The Trip, Part 2”, Jerry Seinfeld (who played himself), George Costanza (Jason Alexander), and Kramer (Michael Richards) visited Runyon Canyon Park immediately after Kramer was released from jail, where he was being held as the supposed “The Fog Strangler” serial killer.

In the 2009 flick Funny People, Runyon Canyon Park was where Ira Wright (Seth Rogan), Leo Koenig (Jonah Hill) and Mark Taylor Jackson (Jason Schwartzman) discussed the illness of fellow comedian George Simmons (Adam Sandler).

ScreenShot3842 ScreenShot3844

ScreenShot3847 ScreenShot3848

Thanks to fave book Hollywood Escapes: The Moviegoer’s Guide to Exploring Southern California’s Great Outdoors (and I just figured out how to write in color on my blog, by the way!  In heaven!!!!), I also learned that in the ultra-weird 2001 flick The Anniversary Party, Runyon Canyon was where Joe Therrian (Alan Cumming) and his wife Sally (Jennifer Jason Leigh), along with their friends Skye Davidson (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Levi Panes (Michael Panes), searched for their missing dog, Otis.

P1030748

Hollywood Escapes also states that 1983’s Breathless and 2005’s Undiscovered were filmed at Runyon Canyon Park, but, unfortunately, I could not find copies of either movie with which to make screen captures for this post.

P1030764

Some filming locations are also visible from the various Runyon Canyon trails, including the abandoned Solar Drive mansion from Law & Order: Los Angeles that I blogged about last December;

P1030767

and the John Lautner-designed Garcia House from Lethal Weapon 2, which I blogged about way back in February of 2008.  And there is a also private home known as Runyon Ranch located inside of the park that has been featured in countless movies and television shows over the years, including my fave, Beverly Hills, 90210, but I am saving that location for a different post.

Big THANK YOU to my good friend Nat for forcing me to suggesting that I stalk this location.  Smile

Lucky Strike Lanes in Hollywood

P1070162

Two weekends ago, while doing some stalking in the Hollywood area, I dragged the Grim Cheaper out to the Hollywood & Highland Shopping Center to grab a quick drink at Lucky Strike Lanes, an oft-used filming location and celebrity hot-spot.  While I had first heard about the bowling alley/lounge when it originally opened eight years ago and knew of its appearance on numerous reality series, for whatever reason I did not have much interest in stalking the place.  Then, a couple of months ago, fellow stalker Lavonna happened to tell me a little bit of trivia about the alley that had me absolutely chomping at the bit to go see it.

P1070163 P1070161

Lavonna informed me that when the iconic Hollywood Star Lanes, which first opened in 1960 and was where the majority of the movie The Big Lebowski was filmed, was torn down back in 2003 to make way for a new elementary school, the owners of the soon-to-be opened Lucky Strike decided to purchase all of the wood that comprised Hollywood Star’s Lane #7.  They then proceeded to use that wood to construct the bar at their new establishment.  How incredibly cool is that?

ScreenShot456 P1070160

They also purchased the exterior neon signage from Hollywood Star Lanes to use as a wall hanging.  Love, love, love it!

P1070158 P1070159

P1070165 P1070166

As you can see above, Lucky Strike Lanes is a VERY cool little spot.  Unfortunately, I have to say that I was not all that crazy about the food.  And sadly, the GC and I did not have time to do any bowling while we were there, but fellow stalker Lavonna has plans to hit the place up when she comes to visit L.A. in November, so you know what that means – I will definitely be doing a re-stalk!  Smile

As I mentioned above, Lucky Strike Lanes in Hollywood is an oft-used filming location.  In the Season 6 episode of The Hills titled “The Elephant in the Room”, Kristin Cavallari, Brodie Jenner, Frankie Delgado, Stacie Hall (aka Stacie the Bartender), and Audrina Patridge and her new boyfriend, singer Ryan Cabrera, spent the evening bowling and flirting at Lucky Strike.

And the Season 2 episode of Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County titled “Since You Been Gone” was filmed at the chain’s Block at Orange location.

As I mentioned above, Lucky Strike Lanes is also a veritable celebrity magnet. Just a few of the stars who have been spotted there include Drew Barrymore, Liv Tyler, John Mayer, Glee’s Cory Monteith, The Bachelorette’s Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez, Demi Moore, Bruce Willis, Rumor Willis, Geena Davis, Robin Williams, Paris Hilton, Nick Carter, Matthew Lillard, Fergie and Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas, Mandy Moore, Judy Greer, Vanessa Hudgens, Courteney Cox, Nicole Richie, Trevor Donovan, Jessica Simpson, and even my girl Jen Aniston.  I once spotted David Arquette walking into the bowling alley for some sort of celebrity event back in December of 2008 and while I tried to take the above photograph of him, as you can see, it did not turn out very well due to the bright lights on the red carpet. You can definitely tell it is him, though.

Big THANK YOU to fellow stalker Lavonna for telling me about this location!  Smile

The Hyatt Huntington Beach from “90210”

IMG_4675

One location that I have been absolutely DYING to stalk for over a year and a half now is the Hyatt Huntington Beach Hotel, the spot which stands in for the Beverly Hills Beach Club, the regular hangout of Liam Court (aka cutie Matt Lanter – sigh!), Annie Wilson (aka Shenae Grimes), Naomi Clark (aka AnnaLynne McCord) and the rest of the West Bev gang, each week on fave show 90210.  So when the Grim Cheaper and I were discussing where to spend his upcoming birthday weekend a couple of weeks back, I casually mentioned the Hyatt as a possible destination and, amazingly enough, despite the hotel’s hefty nightly room cost, he readily agreed!  Yay!  So the two of us, along with my parents, headed down there bright and early this past Saturday morning.  And, let me tell you, I could NOT have been more excited!  I was literally bouncing out of my seat the entire drive from Pasadena down to the South Bay.

Thankfully the hotel did not disappoint!  The Hyatt Huntington Beach is absolutely HUGE – I honestly don’t think I have ever in my life seen a hotel even remotely that big! – and features a retail plaza complete with a grocery store and coffee bar, spa grottos with 3 tucked away spa pools, 6 different on-site restaurants, a water playground for kids, over 100,000 square feet of meeting and event space;

For all of its grandiosity, though, there were a lot of small touches, as well, that gave the hotel an intimate feel; my personal favorite being the mini-outdoor living room that was tucked away in an alcove near our room.

And on Sunday morning when it rained, the hotel put out umbrellas for guests to use.  Love it!

Besides appearing weekly in establishing shots, filming has also taken place on location at the hotel on two different occasions.  The Hyatt was first used in the Season 2 episode of 90210  titled “New Beginnings”.  In that episode, filming took place at the front entrance of the hotel;

None of the interior filming of the Beverly Hills Beach Club takes place at the hotel, though.  Sadly, the interior of the Club is just a set that exists only on a soundstage at Manhattan Beach Studios where the series is lensed.

ScreenCap1086 ScreenCap1101

IMG_4671 IMG_4672

But I was very excited to see some similarities between the interior of the Hyatt hotel and the Beach Club set.  As you can see in the above screen captures and photographs, the Hyatt has a set of three surfboards hanging on the wall behind the concierge desk, much like is the case with the check-in desk at the Beach Club!  I cannot tell you how excited I was to spot those surfboards!

There is also an outdoor fire pit located in the patio area of Mankota’s Grill, the hotel’s poolside restaurant, that looks very similar to the Beach Club’s outdoor fire pit.

ScreenCap1113 ScreenCap1120

ScreenCap1116 ScreenCap1122

A SUPER nice concierge that we spoke with while checking out also let us know that in the Season 3 episode of Chuck titled “Chuck Versus the Beard” the Hyatt stood in for the Malibu Vista Hotel where Devon Woodcomb (aka Ryan McPartlin) and Ellie Bartowski (aka Sarah Lancaster) vacationed . . .

The Hyatt Huntington Beach also stood in for the Turks & Caicos hotel where married CIA agents Steven and Samantha Bloom (aka Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw respectively) conducted a sting operation in the Season 1 episode of Undercovers titled “Instructions”.

ScreenCap1126 ScreenCap1127

According to a column on the Surf City News website, a large green screen was set up at the north end of the pool during the filming of Undercovers so that it could be made to look as if the hotel was located on the beach.  In reality, the Hyatt is located across the street from the beach.

The concierge also told us that the Hyatt was featured in the Season 3 episode of My Fair Wedding titled “Monopoly Bride” in which wedding planner David Tutera coordinates a Monopoly-themed wedding for a board-game obsessed bride and groom.  And she informed us that a production with Hills star Audrina Patridge was filmed by the hotel’s pool, but she was not sure exactly what production it was.  And finally she told us that the hotel will be featured as a venue in an upcoming episode of Tori & Dean: sTORIbook Weddings, which is set to premiere on the Oxygen Channel on April 6th.

The Little Door Restaurant from “Monster-in-Law”

IMG_3862

One restaurant that I have long wanted to stalk, but could just never seem to find was the adorable little outdoor courtyard spot where Kevin Fields (aka Michael Vartan), his mother, Viola Fields (aka Jane Fonda), and his new fiancé, Charlie Cantilini (aka Jennifer Lopez), lunched towards the end of the 2005 romantic comedy Monster-in-Law.  Then, as fate would have it, back in September while trying to track down the French restaurant where Brenda Walsh (aka my girl Shannen Doherty) and Donna Martin (aka Tori Spelling) accidentally ate veal brains during Season 2 of fave show Beverly Hills, 90210, I came across the website for The Little Door on West 3rd in Los Angeles and immediately recognized it as the restaurant from Monster-in-Law.  I added the spot to my “To-Stalk” list and the Grim Cheaper and I finally headed out there this past Saturday night to grab some cocktails.  And I have to say the place was AMAZING!

IMG_3863 IMG_3857

IMG_3858 IMG_3861

The Little Door, which was opened in 1996 by French-born brothers Frederic and Nicolas Meschin, is easily one of the most adorable restaurants I have ever had the pleasure of dining at.  The property, which is actually a converted former schoolhouse, is made up of four different dining areas: the Blue Room, the Winter Garden, the Patio, and the Piano Room.  The most popular area, and the area where Monster-in-Law was filmed, is the Patio, a romantic garden setting complete with trees, trickling fountains, twinkle lights, and a retractable glass roof that is opened during the summer months.   (The room is also very dimly-lit, which is why the above photographs came out so poorly.)  The Little Door has been named “Most Romantic Restaurant of L.A.” and it is not very hard to see why.  It is easily one of the romantic places I have ever visited.  The staff was also incredibly NICE and lacked any sort of that fancy-L.A.-restaurant-type snootiness.  In fact, the bartender and I talked non-stop about celebrities while we were there, which was refreshing as many servers in L.A. try to act like they are above the whole Hollywood thing, when in reality over 90% of them are actors. Winking smile  And while the eatery is on the pricier side, the food is absolutely FABULOUS and I honestly cannot recommend stalking the place enough!

The Little Door was also featured in the Season 2 episode of Entourage titled “The Abyss”, in the scene in which Eric Murphy (aka Kevin Connolly) and Sloane McQuewick (aka Emmanuelle Chriqui) discuss the fact that Vinnie Chase (aka Adrian Grenier) no longer wants to be in the movie Aquaman.

IMG_3864

Besides being a filming location, the restaurant is also a big-time celebrity hotspot.  Just a few of the stars who have dined there recently include Russell Brand, Katy Perry, Jim Carrey, Britney Spears, Gary Oldman, Scott Weiland, Mark McGrath, Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake, Scarlett Johansson, Ryan Reynolds, Eva Longoria, Tony Parker, Jay-Z, Jessica Alba, Christina Aguilera, Posh Spice, David Beckham, Lisa Marie Presley, Pink, Tara Reid, Salma Hayek, Nigel Lythgoe, and Paris Hilton.  The list literally goes on and on!  In fact, the GC and I spotted Dennis Haysbert, who played President David Palmer on the hit television series 24, having a quiet dinner while we were there.  So incredibly cool!

 IMG_3865 IMG_3866

While we were dining, our bartender informed us that an episode of Entourage had also been filmed next door at the Little Door’s sister restaurant, Little Next Door.  So, after we finished eating, we ran right over to stalk the place.  Little Next Door, which is a full-service restaurant as well as a bakery and a café, is an absolutely adorable little spot and is already on my list of places that I need to re-stalk in the very near future.

ScreenCap359_thumb_thumb ScreenCap360_thumb_thumb

ScreenCap361_thumb_thumb ScreenCap362_thumb_thumb

Little Next Door popped up in the Season 4 episode of Entourage titled “No Cannes Do” in the scene in which Eric and Vinnie have a production meeting with independent film director Billy Walsh (aka Rhys Coiro) and actress Anna Faris, who played herself on the series.

IMG_3867

Little Next Door is also a celebrity hotspot and such stars as Rachel Bilson, Lo Bosworth, Tyra Banks, Jessica Biel, Audrina Patridge, Michelle Trachtenberg, Ali Larter, and Isabel Lucas have all been spotted there.

ScreenCap369 ScreenCap370

On a side note – Ever since seeing Blair Waldorf (aka Leighton Meester) gorging herself on macarons in the Season 4 episode of Gossip Girl titled “Juliet Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”, I have been dying to find a bakery that sells the tiny French cookies so that I could sample some for myself.

IMG_3868

So, when I saw a myriad of them on display in the bakery case at Little Next Door, I just had to purchase a boxful.  And, let me tell you, they were simply AMAZING!  Like the best cookies I have ever had in my entire life!  Macarons, which consist of flavored ganache sandwiched between two almond meringue cookies and are not to be confused with the similarly-named macaroons that are made out of coconut, are light, airy, flavorful and literally melt in your mouth!  It is no wonder that Blair Waldorf is obsessed with them!  Because I am diabetic, I only sampled a bite of both the chocolate and Dulce de Leche-flavored macarons, but the Grim Cheaper tried a few of the other flavors and absolutely LOVED them all!  The cookies aren’t sold in many places in L.A. that I have found, but let me tell you, if you can get your hands on some, you simply must try them!!!!

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  Smile

Kristin Cavallari’s Beach House from “The Hills”

 IMG_5848

Just down the street from Jennifer Aniston’s former beach house, which I blogged about on Friday, is the residence that Kristin Cavallari called home during this past season of fave reality show The Hills.  So, since we were already in the area a couple of weeks ago, I just had to drag fellow stalker Mike, from MovieShotsLA – who I am sad to say is not at all a fan of the MTV show – over to stalk the place.  I found this location thanks to fellow stalker Virginie who posted Kristin’s former address in the comments section of my site way back in October of last year and it’s been high up on my “To-Stalk” list ever since.  Thank you, Virginie!  Unfortunately, though, since I so rarely get out to the ‘Bu, I had yet to stalk the residence.  And while I realize that The Hills ended its current season over two and a half months ago and that I am just slightly late to the game on this one, as I always say, it’s far better to be late than never.  🙂

IMG_5844

IMG_5847

IMG_5846

The four bedroom, four bath beach house pictured above, which was built in 1969 and measures 2,972 square feet, first showed up when Kristin Cavallari joined the cast of The Hills in the Season Five episode entitled “It’s On Bitch”.  But she didn’t stay there long.  The Laguna Beach  alum moved out of this location just ten episodes later, on the show’s season finale which was entitled “Boys of the Summer”.  I am fairly certain that Kristin never actually rented this house, though, and quite possibly never even truly lived there, but that the property was leased by MTV solely for filming purposes.

ScreenShot3694

ScreenShot3691

And quite a bit of filming did actually take place on location at the residence.  In fact, the house showed up in all ten episodes which featured Kristin during Season Five.  The back side of the property was the area most often featured on the show . . .

. . . and was the site of Kristin’s many beach parties and get-togethers.  Oh, how I wish I had stalked this place back when The Hills  was still filming so that I could have seen her little tiki bar and patio furniture in person.  Sadly, all of the outdoor decor that appeared on the show has long since been removed.

And, of course, I just had to get a picture of the house’s back stairwell, which appeared numerous times on the show.  I so wanted to pose for a picture while standing on the stairs, too, but being that someone was inside the property while we were stalking the place, I didn’t think that would be a very smart move.  😉

ScreenShot3692

ScreenShot3695

ScreenShot3699

The inside of the home was also featured numerous times on the show and while I have to say that the residence’s interior is absolutely GORGEOUS, it doesn’t, in my opinion at least, really match up to the exterior, which seems to be a bit dated and weathered.

ScreenShot3705

IMG_5832

 IMG_5833

For whatever reason, the front entrance to the house was only ever shown once on The Hills, at the very beginning of the “It’s On Bitch” episode, in the scene in which Kristin is shown getting into her car and driving off on Pacific Coast Highway on her way to make an appearance at Spencer and Heidi’s “Welcome Home” party.

IMG_5849

Amazingly enough, while doing research for this post I discovered that appearing on The Hills  isn’t the home’s only claim to fame.  The property actually has a long and storied Hollywood history.  According to this article, in the early ‘80s the beach pad belonged to music executive Jerry Goldstein.   In the ‘90s, it was purchased by another music man, record promoter and Giant Records president Charlie Minor.  Sadly, on March 19, 1995, Minor, who had worked with both Sting and Janet Jackson during the course of his highly successful career, was murdered in the house by a former girlfriend named Suzette McClure who shot him nine times after catching him in bed with another woman.  But the house’s notoriety doesn’t end there, for it was also used as one of the locations of the Silver Spoon Beach House – the notorious party pad where throngs of young Hollywood stars would hang out during the summer months.  Just a few of the celebs who were seen there include Lindsay Lohan, Ali Landry, The Real Housewives of Orange County’s Slade Smiley (Ugh, gag me!) and Gretchen Rossi, Brody Jenner, and ironically enough, even Kristin Cavallari, who not only partied at the house, but also once did a photo shoot there.

A big THANK YOU to Virginie for finding this location!  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Speidi’s Wedding

img_7067-800

Well, it finally happened!   Yesterday was the big day!  The reality TV event of the season!  What I’m sure was for some fans the wedding of the century!   I, of course, am talking about the nuptials of Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag that took place yesterday at around 5 p.m. in Pasadena.  And, I, of course, was on the scene to stalk the whole thing!  🙂  My boyfriend and I arrived at Westminster Presbyterian Church at around 12:30 yesterday afternoon.  The original plan was to snap a few photos of the wedding set-up, leave, and then come back at around 4 p.m.to take some more pics.  Well, what’s that quote about the best laid plans of mice and men?  🙂 I took one look at the absolute pandemonium that was already in place at 12:30 and that was it for me!  I was not going anywhere!  LOL  So, yes, I stood out on the sidewalk in front of that church from 12:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. yesterday watching the incredible media shitstorm that Speidi had created.  And, let me tell you, I loved EVERY SINGLE MINUTE OF IT!  🙂

img_6226-800

I actually have to say that “shitstorm” doesn’t even begin to describe what was taking place yesterday!  The wedding was originally scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. and three and a half hours prior to that there were already about forty photographers and paparazzi lining the street.  The entire city block surrounding the church had virtually been shut down and there were at least 50 policemen and another 50 private security guards on duty.  It was absolute insanity!  Honestly, it was bigger than any film shoot I’ve ever witnessed.  When we first arrived at the church, Heidi and Spencer were already inside getting ready and their Rolls Royce Phantom was parked right outside (pictured above).

img_6232-800

img_6254-800

img_6237-800

From the outside, it looked as if a film shoot was taking place, complete with a ginormous lighting truck set up shining bright lights through the church windows.  Being that the whole event was being taped for The Hills, I guess in a sense a film shoot was taking place.  But standing outside watching everything, I almost forgot it was a real life wedding that I was there to see.  🙂

img_6290-800

img_6286-800

The security for the wedding was INTENSE!  Every single guest had to show their drivers license upon entering the church, sign photo releases, and have their photographs taken.  There were also metal detectors set up inside of the church, which I am pretty sure were there to ensure that no guests brought cameras inside.

img_1960-800

Early in the afternoon, Heidi’s real father stepped outside the church in full cowboy regalia to make a phone call.  LOL

img_6308-800

img_6319

Lauren and Audrina were some of the first guests to arrive.  Lauren arrived at around 2 p.m. and Audrina at around 2:30.  All of The Hills stars were shuttled in through a back entrance so we didn’t get to see any of them until after the ceremony was over.  🙁  The only Hills stars who did make an appearance prior to the wedding were Brody Jenner and his girlfriend Jayde Nicole, who were dropped off right in front of the church.  Unfortunately neither of them waved or even looked up at the photographers or fans who were screaming their names.  🙁

img_6341-800

img_6385-800

And then things got really exciting!!  All of a sudden I noticed all of the security guards and policemen looking up at the sky.  It turns out that Spencer had hired a plane to write both “Spencer Loves Heidi” and “Heidi’s #1 Hit On iTunes” in the sky.

img_6354-800

img_6362-8001

Next thing I know, out walks the man himself, Spencer Pratt, to see the skywriting for himself!  🙂  YAY!  Spencer was actually shorter than I thought he would be, maybe about 5’7″, and better looking than he appears on TV.  As soon as Spencer walked out, the crowd went absolutely NUTS.   And he was extremely friendly, waving and smiling for the cameras.  He actually seemed a lot different in person than the guy he portrays on TV.    That ever-present chip that seems to reside on his shoulder whenever cameras are rolling didn’t appear to be there yesterday.  He actually didn’t seem like a jerk at all.  I can’t tell you how excited I was to see Spencer in person!!!!  I even yelled out “Congratulations” and he said back “Thank you!”  LOL

img_6366-800

img_6369-800

img_6372-800

By the time Spencer had come outside, the skywriting had all but disappeared and one of the young girls standing across the street told him she had taken pictures of the writing.  So, Spencer walked across the street to take a look at her photos and then posed for a picture with her and her friends, which I thought was so sweet.  NO ONE else from The Hills did anything even remotely close to this yesterday, in fact most of them wouldn’t even wave to the fans, so that’s really when my opinion of Spencer started to change.

img_6593-800

The next “celeb” to arrive was Perez Hilton, who pretty much looked like he just rolled right out of bed for the event.  He was actually wearing khaki pants and a hoodie!! underneath a blazer.  What a complete and total douchebag!  I cannot even believe he got invited to the wedding!  I so should have been invited instead!  🙂

img_6633-800

img_6635

Next up was Justin Bobby, who arrived solo.  And Justin Bobby’s outfit pretty much made Perez Hilton look like a fashion model!!!  Justin actually showed up in what can best be described as pirate pants!  I’m not kidding!  They were calf length and completely frayed at the bottom.  Coupled with his black combat boots, the guy looked like he had come directly off the set of Pirates of the Caribbean.  WHAT A MORON!  I couldn’t zoom in close enough to get a good pic of his pants, but you can kind of see them in the above photo.

img_6736-800

Next up was Heidi’s boss, Brent Bolthouse, who is literally about five feet tall, and Brody’s BFF Frankie Delgado.

img_6823-8001

And then, up walked “Stacey the Bartender”, and all of the fans in attendance pretty much gasped all at once.  LOL  After the drama she caused between Spencer and Heidi this season on The Hills we could not figure out WHY in the heck she would be invited!  It is at this point that I should mention that most of the fans in attendance were 13 year old girls.  Why is it always me and the 13 year old girls?  LOL

img_6851-800

Even though the ceremony was scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., it didn’t actually start until right around 5.  You can see Heidi’s real dad entering the church in his cowboy style tuxedo right before the ceremony began.  LOL

img_6867

These two idiots didn’t show up to the church until about 5:15 (over an hour and fifteen minutes late!) and, because the ceremony had already started, weren’t allowed inside!  LOL LOL LOL  What a couple of douchebags!  If you were lucky enough to have scored an invite to Spencer and Heidi’s wedding, wouldn’t you have MADE SURE you arrived there on time??

img_6411-8001

img_6919-800

img_6920-800

img_6989-800

Speidi’s wedding ceremony only lasted about thirty minutes or so.  During that time everyone pretty much just hung around, waiting with bated breath for the two to make their appearance.  Earlier in the day I had made friends with an event photographer who was on hand to cover the Speidi wedding, so the two of us just chatted while the ceremony was taking place.  She was incredibly nice and told me about all sorts of adventures she has had being a celeb photographer.  Then next thing we knew, hordes of policemen started walking across the street, I guess as a means of crowd control.  They told us to take all the photographs we wanted, but to please not run across the street when Spencer and Heidi exited the church.  By this time there were so many people there it was almost unbelievable!  There had to be over 100 paparazzi on the scene and easily over 300 fans.  Paparazzi were literally climbing the roofs of nearby apartment buildings to get good shots.  LOL

img_6897-8001

img_6900-800

The first guest to leave the church after the ceremony was over was Lauren Conrad, aka LC.  It seemed as if she left the place pretty much as soon as she could.  It was a real bummer, too, as she kept her head down upon exiting the church and would not even wave or smile to the paparazzi or the fans that were there.  I thought that was a pretty crappy thing to do, especially being that all of the fans on site were little kids.   I can’t say I was surprised, though, as I didn’t get a very good impression of her when I watched The Hills being filmed back in August.

img_6908-800

Right after Lauren left, all of the wedding guests filed out of the church and made their way to the front entrance for the bouquet toss;

img_6936-800

including Heidi’s dad in his classy tux!  LOL  🙂

img_6946-800

While the normal guests filed out of the church’s side doors, all of The Hills stars came out of the front entrance, including Heidi’s mom Darlene (who is super tiny in person!) and her sister, and maid-of-honor, Holly;

and my fave Kristin Cavallari, who looked AMAZING and who was also very friendly to the paparazzi and fans :).  I can’t tell you how excited I will be if the rumors are true and Kristin really is joining The Hills once Lauren leaves.  🙂

img_6987-800

At this point there were SO many people lined up outside the church that Brent Bolthouse actually started taking pictures of us all with his cell phone.  LOL

img_7010-800

img_7012-800

img_7013-8001

And then came the moment we had been waiting all day for!  Out walked the newlyweds – Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Pratt!   Heidi looked absolutely beautiful.  I loved her dress – it looked like frosting.  🙂

And, finally, Heidi tossed her bouquet, which was caught by Kristin Cavallari.  Incidentally, all of the female stars of The Hills were strategically placed right in front of Heidi so that one of them would be sure to catch it.  🙂

img_7057-800

img_7060-800

Speidi then said hello to all of the fans in attendance and Heidi blew everyone a kiss.

the newlyweds made off in their Rolls Royce.

img_7193-800

After Speidi left, Lo, Audrina, Kristin, and Stephanie hung around and chatted for a bit.

img_7204-800

And, then, next thing we knew, there were Spencer and Heidi pulling up in their Rolls once again to say hi to all the fans, which I thought was SUPER sweet!  A bunch of little girls ran up to take pics with the newlyweds, but unfortunately the paparazzi immediately swarmed the car, so no one could get photos of anything.  I guess one of the little girls was getting pushed out of the way by the paps, and Spencer yelled out “Hey, come on you guys!  She’s a little girl!  Be careful!!!”  See, what I mean, he’s a nice guy!  🙂  After that, Speidi took off once again and the guests and paparazzi pretty much dispersed.

img_7201-800

Here’s a pic of Holly’s bridesmaid dress, which came from BCBG and was really, really pretty. 🙂

img_7044-800

And there you have it – the whole event from start to finish from a stalker’s point of view.  🙂  I have to admit that, thanks to yesterdays festivities, my opinion of Spencer Pratt, and consequently his new wife Heidi, has completely changed.  I love these two now.  🙂  Sure, people are going to say OF COURSE Spencer came outside and posed for the paps and the fans because he is a publicity hound.  But that’s really not the impression I got.  He seemed like a genuinely nice guy.  I mean, he walked across the street and posed for photos with his fans when no one else from the show would.  At one point fans were BEGGING Heidi’s sister, Holly, who is an absolute nobody, to come across the street to take pictures, but she refused.  I have a soft spot in my heart for any celeb who is nice to their fans, especially their little girl admirers.  Because once upon a time I was that little girl and I can’t even imagine how excited I would have been had I had the chance to meet my favorite star and he was nice to me!  From what I observed yesterday, Spencer did not come off as the arrogant douchebag that he portrays himself to be on The Hills.  I honestly think that in real life he is a nice guy, who realized very early on that the more outrageous he and Heidi acted, the more money they could cash in on.  And now I think the two of them are laughing all the way to the bank.  So, you know what, more power to ’em!   🙂  And I thank them sincerely for being so media friendly and announcing to the world exactly when and where their wedding would be taking place so that I could be a part of it, as it was an experience I will never forget!  🙂

Big THANK YOU to my boyfriend who acted as my paparazzi for the day and took all of the above photos!  Yes, he actually stood out there with me for the entire six hours!  My own father wouldn’t even do that for me, so I guess I really have to hold on to this one.  🙂

Side note – I will not be writing a new blog for Monday, since this one took me pretty much all day to write.  🙂  But I’ll be back on Tuesday with some more stalking!

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Audrina’s New Pad!

img_1190

I have to admit that I shed a little tear during Monday night’s episode of The Hills as Audrina’s moving truck pulled away from the home she formerly shared with Lauren and Lo. With both Whitney and Audrina seemingly moving on from The Hills, I really hope this doesn’t signal the end of the my favorite reality series. I’d be absolutely devastated!!! I mean I get sad enough on Monday nights at 10:30 when The Hills’ ending credits start rolling, as I know I have to wait a full week before I can watch another episode. It’s sick, really. 🙂 Anyway, after watching Monday’s show, I decided I just had to stalk Audrina’s new pad. Thankfully, finding the location wasn’t too hard. I just called on the usual suspects – fave websites the Real Estalker and Big Time Listings – which both stated that the house was located on Bryn Mawr Drive in the Dell neighborhood of Hollywood. From that point it was just a matter of looking at recently sold homes on that street (there were only two) until I found Audrina’s. 🙂

But when I went to stalk Audrina’s pad in person yesterday there were cops swarming the place! I’m really not sure what the story was, and I didn’t stick around long enough to find out, but my best guess is that some Hills filming was taking place and a neighbor had called the police to complain – about what I am not sure. According to reports it seems that Audrina’s neighbors aren’t too happy that she moved into their normally quiet town. LOL The neighbors are upset about the noise and crowding of their small streets, but honestly had the cops not been there, I never would have had any idea that any filming was taking place. The street was quite and there wasn’t a film truck in site, or any other cars for that matter. Personally I’d love it if The Hills filmed in my neighborhood! I’d be out there watching everyday! 🙂

img_1191

Audrina’s new house is a very cute, Spanish style home located on a very windy street high up in the Hollywood Hills. The house was just recently built and sits on a minuscule lot – according to Big Time Listings the lot only measures 0.09 of an acre – that’s 3,999 square feet!!! I mean most celebrity homes are bigger than Audrina’s whole property! LOL Ms. Patridge purchased the three bedroom, two and a half bath, 2,100 square foot home for $1,150,000 – which seems to be pretty low budget for a celeb, even for a reality star. 🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking! 🙂

Stalk It: Audrina’s new house is located at 6393 Bryn Mawr Drive in Los Angeles. How I Met Your Mother’s Josh Radnor is next door at 6387 Bryn Mawr.

Epic Records – Audrina’s Place of Business

img_1953.jpg On The Hills, Audrina Patridge, Lauren’s roommate, works at Epic Records, a division of Sony BMG Music Entertainment. Being that I am completely obsessed with The Hills (when is the second part of the third season going to air already????) I just had to stalk the office building where Audrina works. This location was a snap to find, as I had driven by it many times before and recognized it immediately when it was shown on The Hills. The Sony BMG Music building is located in a cute little business district in Santa Monica, just off the 10 Freeway. While there, you can walk right up to the back gates of the building on 20th Street, and peek in to see the interior courtyard area, which is used frequently on The Hills whenever Audrina needs to escape and have a chat about Justin Bobby with one of her co-workers.

Until next time, Happy Stalking! 🙂

Stalk It: The Sony BMG building is located at 2100 Colorado Avenue, at the corner of 20th Street, in Santa Monica. If you drive north on Colorado, you can hit up Quiznos, La Salsa, and, my personal favorite, Starbucks. I wonder if Audrina stops at that Starbucks every morning before work?!?! 🙂
