Lake Arrowhead’s North Shore Marina Beach from “Vanderpump Rules”

Arrowhead Lake Association from Vanderpump Rules-1200459

Some television moments are so iconic they cannot be forgotten.  A few that are ingrained in my memory for the long haul – Ross and Rachel’s rain-soaked first kiss on Friends, Sam and Diane’s slapping fight on Cheers, Dylan’s epic tantrum (complete with a shattered potted plant) during his first date with Brenda on Beverly Hills, 90210, and Stassi’s discovery that ex-boyfriend Jax has gotten her name tattooed on his arm on Vanderpump Rules.  The latter event took place on a beach in Lake Arrowhead, so, as you can imagine, when I ventured out to the mountain hamlet for a quick getaway this past March, stalking it was one of my top priorities.  The only problem was that, try as I might, I could not find it anywhere.  Not only did I scan aerial views of the lake for hours upon hours looking for the spot, but I also showed screen captures of the tattoo scene to pretty much every local I came across while in town to see if they could identify it – all to no avail.  It was not until a few days after I returned home that I finally pinpointed the site of filming as the beach located at the North Shore Marina.  Darn Murphy’s Law!   Thankfully though, my parents, the Grim Cheaper and I ventured back out to Lake Arrowhead for another visit in late September and, this time, the North Shore Marina beach was my first stop.  Well, sort of.  Sadly, the vast majority of the area’s coastline, including the stretch that appeared in Vanderpump Rules, is private, so I had to settle for seeing it from afar.

In the Season 2 episode of Vanderpump Rules titled “Only the Lonely,” Stassi Schroeder and the rest of the Sur gang head out to Lake Arrowhead to attend a Pierce the Arrow (Tom Sandoval’s band) gig.  (You can read about the location where the band performed here, as well as about a couple of other sites that appeared in the episode here and here.)  Upon arriving in town, the group makes a brief stop at a local beach for some paddle-boarding and sunbathing.

Though not much of the beach was shown in the episode, I was able to discern that it was situated in between a grouping of boat docks . . .

Screenshot-006578

. . . and that there was some sort of two-doored building, which I figured was a public restroom, on the premises.

Screenshot-006567-2

Though Lake Arrowhead isn’t all that big, the search for the “Only the Lonely” beach proved problematic, mainly due to the fact that overhead views of the region aren’t especially clear from any search engine.  After scouring and re-scouring every inch of the area’s shoreline via Google aerials for what seemed like hours, using the layout of the docks and the shape of the shoreline as it appeared in VR as my yardsticks, I finally pinpointed the site as the small beachfront located just north of the Arrowhead Lake Association’s main office at 870 North Highway 173 in the North Shore Marina.  Though the beach does not have a name or an exact address, it is situated at the northern end of the marina, at the end of Access Trail 63, adjacent and just north of Peninsula Park, as denoted in the aerial view below.

Screenshot-006582

While the gang is at the beach, Stassi makes the startling discovery that Jax Taylor, whom she broke up with months prior, has just gotten her name tattooed on his arm.  Dumbfounded, she immediately asks the question all viewers were thinking at the time, “Why couldn’t you have done this when we were together?”  (Instead of getting a bottle service girl pregnant in Vegas, perhaps?)  Tom weighs in further, cautioning those at home, “Guys, I’m telling you, do not go out getting your ex-girlfriend’s name tattooed on your arm.  Nine out of ten times this leads to a restraining order.  Jax just got real lucky on this one.”  It should be noted that it was not actually Stassi’s name that Jax immortalized on his bicep.  No, he decided to take things one step further by tattooing her signature onto his arm.  And yes, he of course covered over the inking not too long after the fact (with a black rose, no less), but not before etching another girlfriend’s name onto his other arm.  An FYI for those who don’t watch the show – that relationship didn’t last, either.  In fact, less than a month and a half after obtaining that tat, Jax was already looking to have it obscured.  As he explained to his tattoo artist, “It’s round two for me on the cover-ups.”  Thankfully, Jax switched things up in Season 4 by adding the names of his two BFFs, Tom and Tom, to his forearm.  (I so love that he failed to capitalize the “i.”  No ragrets!)

I cannot express how badly I wanted to re-create the moment Stassi discovered the tattoo (which was captured so perfectly on film), but because the beach and entire area surrounding it are private, that was not to be.

The site is so removed from public access, in fact, that the view below is pretty much all I saw of it.

For those interested, that view can be seen from the lookout point denoted below, which is situated slightly north of the Arrowhead Lake Association’s main office on Highway 173.

The stalk was not all for naught, though, as we were afforded some gorgeous glimpses of the North Shore Marina.

Stalk It: North Shore Marina, from the “Only the Lonely” episode of Vanderpump Rules, is located at 870 North Highway 173 in Lake Arrowhead.  Though the beach where filming took place does not have an exact address, it can be found at the northern end of the marina, at the end of Access Trail 63, adjacent to and north of Peninsula Park.  Please keep in mind that the beach is private and trespassing strictly prohibited, but you can catch a limited glimpse of it from the lookout point situated just north of Arrowhead Lake Association’s main office on Highway 173.

The Rocks from Jennifer Aniston’s Perfume Ad

ScreenShot5328

This past April, the ad campaign for my girl Jen’s newly-released fragrance, which is named “Jennifer Aniston”, was revealed.  The ads showed the actress, wrapped solely in a towel, sitting on a very rocky beach somewhere in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.  Well, let me tell you, once I saw those photographs, I became extremely hell-bent on finding the exact spot where they had been taken, especially since around that very same time my fiancé and I had just not-so-coincidentally finalized our Cabo San Lucas honeymoon plans.  I say “not-so-coincidentally” because the only reason we even looked at honeymooning in Cabo in the first place was because of how often Jen vacations there.  My now-husband originally wanted to spend the honeymoon in Hawaii, but I am EXTREMELY afraid to fly and suffer from terrible anxiety days, and sometimes weeks, before venturing on a long flight.  I really didn’t want to be nervous or stressed about flying the day of my wedding, so I suggested we travel instead to a place a little closer to home.  I started looking at Cabo, mostly because it is Jen’s favorite getaway spot, and when I discovered that it was a short one-hour-and-fifty minute plane ride from LAX I was sold!  And then when the Grim Cheaper found out that we could book round-trip airfare to the Mexican city for a scant $150 each, it was pretty much “Cabo, here we come!”  So, a few weeks later when fellow stalker Owen sent me Jen’s new perfume ad, I just about fell over.  I mean, could it have been any more perfect?  Here I was about to head to the very city where the photographs had just been taken!  Yay!

ScreenShot5330

I half-jokingly asked Owen if he could track down the rocks for me prior to our trip, and even though I figured it would pretty much be like trying to find a needle in a haystack, about an hour later there was an email from him in my inbox along with a six-page attachment.  The email stated, “It’s pretty much impossible to find a couple of rocks without being there in Cabo, but I think I’ve got a good idea where you should look.”  Amazingly enough, even though Owen was not familiar with the area, he had figured out that the rock formation which can be seen in the distance behind Jen was the famous Land’s End (pictured above), which is located at the very southern tip of the Baja peninsula.  He also figured out that Jen’s head was blocking the three mountainous formations which can be seen at the far left of the above image.  Sure enough, when I looked at the above photograph compared with Jen’s advertisement, the two backgrounds matched perfectly.  From there, Owen scanned through aerial views of Cabo San Lucas to determine the exact location where Jen was sitting in the photograph.  His best guess was that the rocks were located somewhere on the far east end of Medano Beach, between Riu Palace and Missiones Del Cabo.  The six-page attachment he had included with his email provided detailed photographs, maps, and aerial views of the Cabo area, and, let me tell you, I printed that thing out and carried it with me EVERYWHERE I went in Mexico so that I could ask anyone and everyone who would talk to me where those rocks were located.

Jen's Rocks

One of the very first people I asked was our airport shuttle driver, whom we met immediately upon landing at Los Cabos International Airport.  The driver took one look at Jen’s picture and told us that it had been taken at the beach at Esperanza Resort, which I blogged about on Friday.  Turns out our shuttle driver used to be a paparazzi and not only recognized the beach from the many times he had gone there to photograph celebrities, but also informed us that Jen had stayed at the hotel countless times over the years, so it was a place she would have been familiar with.  He also pointed out that the structure visible in the background of the right-hand side of the picture (denoted with a blue arrow above) was the Sunset Da Mona Lisa Restaurant – a very popular Cabo San Lucas dining spot.  Even though the shuttle driver seemed to really know what he was talking about, I continued showing Jen’s picture to everyone I encountered on the trip to see if they might know for sure where it had been taken.  And it was mind-boggling how many different answers I received!  One bartender I spoke with even went so far as to hypothesize that the photograph had been taken at Chileno Beach and that the Land’s End rock formation had been digitally added to the background of the picture while it was being edited – which I guess is possible, but not very likely.  The answer we heard most often, though, was that the picture had been taken at the Esperanza Resort beach – which is pretty much the exact spot where Owen had originally told me to look.  So, one day the Grim Cheaper and I rented a car and headed north to try to find Jen’s rocks.

IMG_1152 IMG_1146

And, let me tell you, it was quite the stalk!  Definitely different than any of the other stalks I’ve experienced in my lifetime.  Esperanza’s beach is extremely rocky, and when I say rocky, I mean ROCKY.  The GC and I had to traipse over three, four, and five-foot tall boulders while making our way north.  It was more of a mountain climb than anything else, actually.  Oh, and did I mention that it was about 110 degrees at the time?  I can only imagine what the people who saw us during our hike were thinking.  Probably something along the lines of “Stupid-*ss gringos!”  😉  The GC and I walked about a kilometer north of the resort, which took us around ninety minutes, and examined every square inch of the beach.  Finding Jen’s exact rocks proved to be rather difficult, though, as we had arrived at the Esperanza in the late afternoon during high-tide and I am almost certain that Jen was photographed in the early morning hours when the tide was much, much lower.  Adding to the difficulty was the fact that Jen’s photograph had been taken with a wide-angle lens, which distorted the background of the image.

ScreenShot5328 IMG_1145

What we finally determined, without being able to find the actual rocks, was that Jen was photographed about five hundred feet north of Esperanza Resort. As you can see in the above photograph as compared with Jen’s advertisement, while it’s not the exact spot where Jen sat, I think we got pretty darn close.  I am fairly certain that Jen’s photo was taken on the same rock formation where I am sitting in the above picture, but a bit farther out towards the sea.  Because the tide was high while we were there, though, we unfortunately couldn’t venture out any farther into the water.

ScreenShot5325 ScreenShot5326

As you can see above, numerous photographs were taken for the Jennifer Aniston Perfume advertising campaign.  My favorite, though, was definitely the one featuring Land’s End in the background.  But truth be told, she looks amazing in all of them!  Can you even imagine being 41 years old and having a body like that?  Who am I kidding – can you even imagine being 21 years old and having a body like that???  Sigh!   The photographs were all shot by renowned Italian photographer Mario Sorrenti and I honestly think that they are some of the best photos that Jen has ever taken.

The perfume, which was originally called Lolavie (which some have reported as being a rough French translation for “laughing at life”), took 18 months to create and the actress made herself a part of every minute detail of the development process.  Of the creation, Jen said, “It wasn’t just about showing up for a shoot and putting my name on the bottle.  I felt like a little chemist.  It’s turned out to be an extension of myself as opposed to slapping my name on something.”  The perfume is supposed to smell clean and beachy, but unfortunately, because, it is only available at Harrods Department Store in London (and for whatever reason it cannot be shipped outside of the UK), I have yet to be able to catch a sniff of it.  🙁  But thankfully, my good friend and fellow stalker Kerry has a daughter, Jen, who has a friend who lives in London who is going to purchase a bottle for me and bring it with her to the states when she comes to visit next month.  And, let me tell you, I cannot wait to get my hands on it!  Of the scent, Jen said, “I am not a big perfume-y fragrance fan.  I want people to go ‘What is that?  You smell great!’”  I have never been a perfume-fragrance fan, either, but if I did wear a scent, that is EXACTLY what I would want people to say about it, so I have a feeling I am going to LOVE Jen’s perfume.  🙂

Jen was recently on fave show Chelsea Lately where she spoke about her perfume, of which Chelsea said, “Oh, that smells EXACTLY like I think you would smell!”  LOVE IT!  LOVE IT!  LOVE IT!  And being that I would like nothing more than to smell like Jen, I am pretty sure Jennifer Aniston is going to become my signature scent.  😉  You can watch a clip of Jen’s Chelsea Lately appearance by clicking above.

Big THANK YOU to Owen for finding this location!  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Esperanza Map 2

Stalk It: I am fairly certain that the rocks from Jennifer Aniston’s perfume advertisements are located about 500 feet north of the Esperanza Resort, which is located at Carretera Transpeninsular KM 7 in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.  I would recommend parking your car at the Esperanza and using their beach access.  From there, walk due north to the rock formation denoted with the pink arrow above.  Be forewarned, though, the beach north of the Esperanza is extremely rocky and makes for quite a precarious walk.  Be extremely cautious and wear shoes with good tread.  I’d also recommend stalking the beach early in the morning, during low tide.

Paradise Cove

img_1524-800

One location I have been wanting to stalk ever since I first moved to L.A. nine years ago – has it really been nine years??? – is Malibu’s Paradise Cove.  Countless movies have been filmed at the Cove, but I wanted to stalk it for one reason and one reason only.    Back in April of 1999, it was the location where Britney Spears filmed the music video for her hit song “Sometimes”.   And I absolutely LOVED that video.  I can still remember the first time I watched it on TRL   just about ten years ago.  And ever since that day I have been dying to see the white pier featured in the video in person.  So, this past Saturday, I finally did just that.  When I happened to mention to my mom that morning that I was on my way to stalk the Cove and the reason why, she said “Oh Lindsay, when are you going to get over this Britney obsession?”  LOL

img_1555-800

Paradise Cove, as we know it today, came to be in the early 1950s when a man named Joe Morris purchased two adjacent parcels of land and combined them into 70 beachfront acres complete with a private cove and a beach cafe.  In the beginning, the area was a fisherman’s hangout, a place for sea-weary workers to not only launch their boats, but to kick back and grab a drink after a long day on the open water.  The Cove gradually turned into a beachfront community, a place for local families, tourists, and celebrities alike to hang out by the sea.  In the 70s, Joe sold his land, his beachfront restaurant, and his private cove to the Kissel family, who turned the area into a waterfront mobile home park.  Joe’s son Bob was heartbroken over the sale and in 1998, he returned to Paradise Cove and purchased his father’s former restaurant.  He renamed it Bob Morris’ Paradise Cove Beach Cafe and remains the owner to this day.    The above photograph is of a picture on display at the Beach Cafe of my girl Marilyn Monroe  posing on a cliff above the restaurant many moons ago.

Most of the action of Britney’s “Sometimes” video takes place right on the Paradise Cove pier.  In the video, while hanging out at her beach house, Britney spies a cute boy playing nearby in the sand.  She rushes down to the local pier, where her back-up dancers, dressed all in white, are waiting for her.  The group then performs a very “Britney” dance routine (of course, I memorized it!) for the boy.  I know, I know, the premise sounds incredibly lame, but – trust me – the video is adorable!  You can watch the “Sometimes” video here.

img_1548-800

screenshot828

In person, the pier looks exactly the same as how it appeared in Britney’s video.  The only difference is that, in real life, there is no “Kenny’s Cove” sign located over the entrance.   Apparently the video’s producer, Nigel Dick, thought an entrance sign similar to the one that adorns the Santa Monica pier was needed for decoration.  He decided to name the cove after the video’s location scout, Kenny.  🙂  Love it!

Had to do it!  🙂

Paradise Cove has been featured in countless productions over the years.   In American Pie 2,  the Michigan lake house the boys spend their summer at was actually a facade the producers built on the beach at Paradise Cove just North of Bob Morris’ Paradise Cove Beach Cafe.  That’s the Paradise Cove Pier behind the boys in the above screen capture.  Producers also built a fake lighthouse on the end of the pier for the production.

screenshot843

screenshot845

In Lethal Weapon 4, Mel Gibson and Rene Russo lived in a trailer/house also located just to the North of the Beach Cafe.  Their house was also just a facade built for filming.  You can see the Cafe’s exterior just to the right of Mel Gibson in the above screen capture.

 screenshot861

The pier is featured twice in Indecent Proposal.  It first shows up as the location where Woody Harrelson proposes to Demi Moore in the beginning of the movie.  Then, at the very end of the movie, it is where the two reunite.

screenshot851

Other productions filmed at the Cove include Rockford Files (James Garner lived in a trailer on the beach), Gidget, Monster-in-Law (JLo and Michael Vartan explored the Cove’s tide pools in the beginning of the movie), Alias, Charlie’s Angels, X-Men (Spider-Man creator Stan Lee served hot dogs by the sea) and The House of Sand and Fog.  The Beach Boys also shot the cover for their Surfin’ Safari album at the Cove (pictured above).

[ad]

img_1535-800

I HIGHLY recommend stalking the Cove – but be forewarned, it’s not cheap!  Parking there costs $25!  Yes, you read that right!  Which is the very reason it took me nine years to stalk the place.  Stealing a term from my friend Mandy, I long ago dubbed my boyfriend the “Grim Cheaper” because the guy just hates spending money.  Five years ago, when we went to stalk the Cove for the first time, he took one look at that $25 parking sign and turned the car right around.  LOL  What we didn’t realize at the time is if you grab a bite to eat at Bob Morris’ Paradise Cove Beach Cafe and spend more than $20, the parking fee drops to $3, which is not bad at all.  So, after stalking the Cove this past Saturday we marched right into the cafe and parked ourselves on some bar stools.   And while we had a good time and the food was definitely yummy, I think we actually missed the boat on that one.  What we didn’t realize is that there is actually a back patio area where you can sip a cocktail while sitting outside under the sun, watching the surf.  But the rules for the back patio are pretty confusing because while the cafe provides the outdoor seating, they do not actually own that particular area.  So, you can buy a bottle of wine or beer inside the restaurant to take outside, but the bottles have to remain closed until you reach your sandy destination.  If you open your beverages before you leave, you will have to finish them inside.  Confused?  So was I.

img_1557-800

Basically, Bob Morris’ Beach Cafe acts as a liquor store and sells full bottles of wine and beer that you can purchase at the bar and then take outside to drink on the back patio area.   I SO wish I had known that at the time, as the patio looks like a really fun place to grab a drink, put your toes in the sand, and watch the sun set.  Oh well, it looks like I’ll just have to go back to stalk the place again.  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂
