Dana’s House from “The Goldbergs”

Dana's House from The Goldbergs-1200336

Brenda and Dylan.  Winnie and Kevin.  Rachel and Joey.  Adam and Dana.  All TV couples who didn’t wind up together, but who, in my never-to-be-humble opinion, really should have.  Though, since The Goldbergs is still on the air, I guess there’s still hope for the latter two.  I mean, any romance that starts out with an ‘80s movie re-creation has to end well, right?  It would just be sacrilege otherwise!  For those who don’t watch the popular ABC series, when tween Adam Goldberg (Sam Giambrone) falls in love for the first time – with Dana Caldwell (Natalie Alyn Lind), the 13-year-old girl down the street who “smells like Fruity Pebbles” – he professes his feelings by standing in her front yard, boom box held above his head, serenading her with Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes,” a la Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) in Say Anything . . .  The moment, of course, pulled at this 80s-loving-stalker’s heart strings.  So when my friend/fellow stalker Michael (you know him from his many guest posts) recently informed me of the location of Dana’s house, I ran right out to see it in person.

The Goldbergs’ Say Anything . . . homage occurs in Season 1’s “The Ring.”  In the episode, Adam realizes he is in love with Dana and seeks advice from his lady-killer grandpa, Pops Solomon (George Segal), who urges him, “You gotta go for it!  Make a big gesture, something that’ll show her exactly how you feel.”   Things don’t go quite as planned, though, for poor Adam.

Upon hitting play on his boom box, he accidentally wakes up Dana’s brother and father before suffering the ultimate humiliation of getting caught in the sprinklers.   Despite the fact that, as Adam later laments to Pops, “I serenaded her brother, I dropped my boom box, and I soaked my Lloyd Dobler coat,” the grand gesture is not lost on Dana and, in the end, Adam gets the girl.

While watching the scene, Michael noticed that a small park-like area was visible across the street from Dana’s house.  Figuring the dwelling was most likely located in the same vicinity as the Cheviot Hills residence that portrays the Goldberg family home on the series, he started poking around the neighborhood via aerial views looking for a tiny landscaped space situated across from residences and it wasn’t long before he found the right spot.  As it turns out, Dana’s pad is just around the corner from Adam’s!

As Michael also noticed (I totally missed it!), set dressers covered over a portion of the home’s garage with foliage for the shoot, as well as most of the driveway with fake grass.

In actuality, the property’s driveway takes up almost the entire northern end of the front yard, as you can see below.

In real life, Dana’s house boasts 3 bedrooms, 4 baths, and 2,934 square feet.

The picturesque pad, which was originally built in 1948 and features a 0.28-acre lot, is massive in person – much larger than it appeared onscreen.

The Caldwell residence popped up a few times on The Goldbergs, including in the Season 1 episode titled “You’re Under Foot” . . .

. . . and in Season 2’s “Cowboy Country.”

Inexplicably, a different home was used as Dana’s in the Season 2 finale titled “Goldbergs Feel Hard.”  Though little other than the front door of the property was shown, it is definitely a different locale, as you can see below.

Dana’s residence has actually been featured in several productions over the years.

Thanks to my friend Chas, of the It’s Filmed There website, I learned that in the Season 2 episode of Joan of Arcadia titled “Game Theory,” which aired in 2005, the pad belonged to a different Dana – Dana Tuchman (Kevin Rahm), Joan Girardi’s (Amber Tamblyn) teacher.

In the Season 1 episode of Bones titled “The Woman in the Car,” which aired in 2006, the property portrayed the supposed Washington, D.C.-area home of Carl Decker (Zeljko Ivanek).

Thanks to filminglocs, I discovered that the Caldwell residence was also featured in the Season 7 episode of House titled “Carrot or Stick,” which aired in 2011, in the scene in which Dr. Robert Chase (Jesse Spencer) tries to figure out who took a suggestive photo of him.

Skylight Books from “Veep”

Skylight Books from Veep-4760

While we are on the subject of historic book shops featured in Washington, D.C.-based productions (you can read my post on Idle Time Books from A Few Good Men here), I would be remiss if I did not mention a bookseller that popped up on my new favorite show, Veep.  The Grim Cheaper and I recently became obsessed with the HBO series thanks to a recommendation from my good friend Lavonna and blew through all 48 episodes in about 2 weeks.  It is easily one of the best-written, best-acted, most hilarious shows I have ever had the pleasure of watching.  I mean, any production that pretty much starts out with the main character sh*tting their pants at a public event is something I am going to be all over!  I, of course, started researching its locations right out of the gate and was a little heartbroken to discover that the first four seasons were shot in the D.C. area, especially considering we had only just returned from the District a few weeks prior.   There was a silver lining, though – Veep relocated to Los Angeles for Season 5.  But somewhere along the way I forgot that fact and viewed all of the L.A.-based episodes without paying any sort of attention to the locales.  It was not until we completed our binge that I remembered, which meant I had to go back and re-watch all of the fifth season (though that was by no means a chore).  During my second go-around of the episode titled “C**tgate,” I recognized Skylight Books, one of my favorite L.A. bookstores, featured in a scene.  Though I stalked and blogged about the place long ago, way back in 2011 (hence why I look so different in the above pic), I figured it was worthy of a re-do.

Skylight Books was established at the former site of another landmark bookstore, Chatteron’s, which shut its doors in 1994 upon the death of its owner after two decades in business.  The space remained vacant for the next two years before eventually being brought back to life thanks to the efforts of a group of twelve people, including actors Milton Katselas, Tony Danza and Jeffrey Tambour, who banded together to create Skylight Books.  The shop opened its doors to the public on November 1st, 1996.

Skylight Books quickly became a Los Feliz staple and remains so today.

The store is known for its bright and airy aesthetic, the hundreds of signings with notable authors it hosts each year (you can check out the Skylight Books events page here), and the 20-foot tall ficus tree that stands at its center.

Its book inventory is also unparalleled.  I always stumble upon the most unique and noteworthy finds while there.  I once walked away with a fold-out map of famous literary locations.  You just don’t see stuff like that anywhere else.  The shop has a fabulous selection of cards and gifts, as well.

In “C**tgate, President Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) heads to a D.C.-area bookstore with her boyfriend, Charlie Baird (John Slattery), for a holiday shopping photo-op.  While there (spoiler alert!), Charlie learns that Selina has decided not to bail out his bank, forcing him into bankruptcy.  (Because as much as Selina hopes “to fiscal f*ck the Fed has a trillion dollars stuffed in a mattress somewhere,” that sadly isn’t the case.)  Needless to say, the outing does not end well.  Not only does Charlie storm out, but he plastic-surgery shames the president over her recent eye lift.  And I just have to say here that Louis-Dreyfus is sheer magic as Selina.  I mean is there any role she doesn’t absolutely nail?  From Margo Chester in Christmas Vacation to Elaine Benes on Seinfeld to Vice President/President Meyer on Veep – she is perfection in every part.

Little of Skylight Books was shown in Veep, but I immediately recognized the space’s light wood shelves, brickwork, and the ficus tree branches that canopy the stacks.

Only the interior of the shop was featured in the episode.  For the exterior establishing shot, an actual D.C. bookstore named Kramerbooks & Afterwords was utilized.  That location can be found at 1517 Connecticut Avenue Northwest in Dupont Circle.

As mentioned in my 2011 post, Skylight Books was one of the main locations used on Joan of Arcadia.  In the pilot, Joan Girardi (Amber Tamblyn) got a job at the bookstore, which was referred to by its real name, but was said to be located in Arcadia, Maryland.  She continued to work there throughout the series’ two-year run.  During the show’s first season, filming took place regularly at the Los Feliz shop.

But for Season 2, a set re-creation of Skylight Books was constructed on a soundstage.  As you can see, production designers changed things up quite a bit with the set.  Though similar to Skylight, the re-creation is much larger and features more brickwork.  You can read an interesting article on the store’s use in the series here.

Calvin Weir-Fields’ (Paul Dano) book signing at the end of the 2012 dramedy Ruby Sparks takes place at Skylight Books, as well.

Another Los Feliz location that the Grim Cheaper and I stalked two weekends ago was Skylight Books, the bookstore where Joan Girardi (aka Amber Tamblyn) worked on the 2003 television series Joan of Arcadia.  In a very synchronicitous twist of fate, the GC and I had visited Skylight Books way back in October of last year, just a few minutes before grabbing dinner at the nearby Dresden Restaurant from Swingers.  We both fell in love with the bookstore immediately, but, because I had never seen an episode of Joan of Arcadia, I had no idea whatsoever that the place was a filming location.  Then, randomly enough, the very next day I met up with fellow stalker Chas, from the ItsFilmedThere website who was in town visiting from Indiana, and he happened to mention that he was taking his mom to Skylight Books later that afternoon because Joan of Arcadia was one of her very favorite shows.   Well, let me tell you, I just about died upon finding out that information and immediately added the store to my “To Re-Stalk” list and dragged the GC back there two Saturdays ago after eating lunch at Fred 62.

In the pilot episode of Joan of Arcadia, God (who in this particular instance was played by Kris Lemche) instructs Joan to get a part-time job at Skylight Bookstore – the store’s actual name was used in the series – for reasons he does not specify.  She continued to work there throughout the series’ short two-season run.

Interestingly enough, according to this fantastic article about the filming of Joan of Arcadia, all of the bookstore scenes during the first season of the series were filmed on location at the actual Skylight Books.   Production designer Bill Eigenbrodt says he chose the store due to its “distinct visual personality”.  And let me just say that, with its high, peaked ceilings, numerous skylights, concrete flooring, large trees, exposed ducts, brick walls, and extensive use of wood décor, the store definitely does have a unique look.  Ironically enough, while Joan of Arcadia is set in the fictional town of Arcadia, Maryland on the East Coast, to me Skylight Books has more of a Pacific Northwest feel to it.  But, then again, what do I know.  Winking smile

ScreenCap1355 ScreenCap1349

 ScreenCap1352 ScreenCap1354

For the second season of the series, producers had a replica of the store built on a soundstage and they changed things around quite a bit, making the shop slightly larger, dropping the ceilings, adding more brick walls, and infusing the decor with a bit of a Craftsman style.

IMG_4757 IMG_4755

Skylight Books, which was originally founded in 1996, is a VERY cool bookstore and I can’t recommend stalking it enough!  Apparently it has been used quite often in filming, but the SUPER nice clerk that I spoke with was unsure of which other productions had been lensed there.  He did mention that some location scouts from Glee had been there that very week, so the shop might just be showing up on the show in the near future!

Big THANK YOU to fellow stalker Chas, from the ItsFilmedThere website, for telling me about this location!  Smile
