Callahan’s Diner from “Zodiac”

Callahan's Santa Monica Zodiac (11 of 16)

In the early years of our relationship the Grim Cheaper lived in Santa Monica, just a few blocks from a local staple named Callahan’s Diner.  Even though I knew the eatery was a filming location and supposedly served up some fabulous grub, for whatever reason we never ventured in for a meal.  I am kicking myself now, too, because the restaurant, which has been in operation since 1948, is set to close at the end of the year.  So when I found myself in the area a couple of weeks ago, I seized the opportunity to snaps some pics of the place.

[ad]

It was late afternoon when I stopped by Callahan’s, just a few minutes before I had to pick the GC up from a meeting, so, unfortunately, I did not have time to grab a bite to eat.  But the owner, Abraham Vazquez, was nice enough to spend some time chatting with me and invited me to snap all of the photographs of the place that I wanted.

The Streamline Moderne-style building that houses Callahan’s – and the neighboring Vienna Pastry – was constructed by restaurateur Art Groves in 1946 for his eponymous Groves Restaurant and Bakery.  In 1948, he leased out the restaurant portion of the property to Melvin Callahan and Callahan’s Diner was born.  The café proved successful for four decades.  In 1988, Melvin sold the site to Abraham, who thankfully kept Callahan’s name, décor and menu intact.  While Abraham also enjoyed a long, successful run, he recently announced that Callahan’s will be shutting its doors on December 31st.  A new company, LGO Hospitality, purchased the building not long ago and made plans to raise Vazquez’s rent when his lease is up at the end of the year.  He, sadly, cannot afford the price hike.  The good news is that LGO has a long history of preserving historical locations and announced in a press release that while the Callahan’s menu will be transformed, the floor plan and décor will remain largely the same.

Callahan’s has appeared onscreen a few times over the years, most notably in the 2007 thriller Zodiac.  The eatery was featured in three scenes from the movie – well, sort of.  It first popped up as the supposed San Francisco-area diner where Inspectors David Toschi (Mark Ruffalo) and William Armstrong (Anthony Edwards) discussed some handwriting samples over a BLT sandwich.

ScreenShot485

Towards the middle of the film, it was used in the scene in which Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal) bought David lunch and informed him that books on cyphers had been stolen from both the Presidio Library and the Oakland Army Terminal Library.

ScreenShot489

ScreenShot488

Now here’s where things get weird.  The third scene to take place at Callahan’s involved Robert sharing with David the various evidence he had compiled on suspect Arthur Leigh Allen (John Carroll Lynch).  Prior to stalking the restaurant, I had come across a piece of Zodiac trivia on IMDB that stated, “Though Callahan’s Diner was a set built for the film, the Callahan’s Diner logo and window script is identical to that used by Callahan’s Diner at 1213 Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica, California.”   I assumed the trivia was bupkis, especially once Abraham had confirmed for me that filming had actually taken place on the premises.  But while watching the third scene that was supposedly shot at the eatery, I noticed that some portions of the interior did not match up to what was shown in the earlier scenes or to the real Callahan’s interior.

ScreenShot492

ScreenShot493

What first tipped me off to the inconsistencies was when David was shown leaving Callahan’s through a door located on the restaurant’s western side – a door that does not exist in the real life space.  A partition separating the entryway from the booths was also visible in that segment of the scene.  There is no such partition at Callahan’s, though, as you can see below.

ScreenShot494

There was no such door or partition in that area in the earlier scene in which David and William discussed handwriting samples, either.

ScreenShot494

ScreenShot487

What was shown in the handwriting sample scene does match perfectly to the real restaurant, though, as you can see below.

ScreenShot487

A wide shot of the restaurant was also featured in the evidence scene and, again, it does not match the real life interior of Callahan’s.

ScreenShot491

Nor does it match what was shown in the earlier lunch scene.

ScreenShot491

ScreenShot490

The interior shown in the lunch scene does match the actual Callahan’s interior, though.  All of this leads me to believe that, as implausible as it may sound, while the lunch scene and handwriting sample scene were filmed on location at Callahan’s, the evidence scene was shot on a set modeled to look like it.  The reason this was done is anyone’s guess.

Abraham also informed me that Callahan’s Diner had been used in music videos for both Snoop Dogg and Lionel Richie, but I am unsure of which videos.  If any of my fellow stalkers are aware, please let me know.

Wokcano from “Get Shorty”

Get Shorty restaurant (4 of 19)

A couple of months ago, Mike, from MovieShotsLA, called to let me know that he had just discovered that the iconic scene from Get Shorty in which loan-shark-turned-movie-producer Chili Palmer (John Travolta) threw a henchman named Bear (James Gandolfini) down a flight of stairs had been lensed at a restaurant named Abiquiu (now Wokcano) in Santa Monica.  And even though I had not seen the 1995 gangster comedy in years, I was beyond thrilled to learn this information and dragged the Grim Cheaper right on over there for happy hour just a few days later.

[ad]

Abiquiu was opened at 1413 5th Street in Santa Monica on July 28th, 1994 by John Sedlar.  The restaurateur had originally founded a more upscale, special occasion-type eatery named Bikini at the site in 1991.  After Bikini folded in early 1994, due to a combination of the recession and the aftereffects of the the Northridge earthquake, the two-story space sat vacant for the about six months.

Sedlar then opened the more casual Abiquiu, named for the Santa Fe town where his grandparents once lived, in its place.  He kept the interior, which in an August 1994 Los Angeles Times article journalist S. Irene Virbila described as “one of the most beautiful in L.A.”, largely the same.  At some point in 2002, Abiquiu closed.  Following in its place were several eateries, including Union, then Akwa, and then, most-recently, in July 2008, the Wokcano chain opened its fifth Los Angeles-area outpost at the site.  Amazingly enough, despite the many changes in ownership over the 18 years since Get Shorty was filmed, the restaurant is still very recognizable from its onscreen appearance.  But more on that later.

The GC was floored to discover Wokcano’s stellar happy hour, which he quickly dubbed “the best in L.A.”  And I have to say that I agree with him.  The food was excellent, the servings huge and the prices extremely inexpensive.  I highly recommend the Garlic Brussels Sprouts ($5) and the Crispy Pepper Calamari ($7), both of which are to die for!

Happy hour is offered in Wokcano’s upstairs bar area, off of which is located a huge outdoor patio, complete with couches and cabanas.  Love it!

In Get Shorty, Abiquiu was the restaurant where Bo Catlett (Delroy Lindo) tried to sabotage Karen Flores (Rene Russo) and Chili’s lunch meeting with movie producer Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman).

When Bo’s “muscle”, Bear, tried to intimidate Chili, Chili responded by throwing him down a flight of stairs.

Amazingly, that now-famous staircase still looks exactly the same as it did when Get Shorty was filmed!  (Unfortunately, Wokcano is housed in an extremely bright space, which wreaked havoc on my photographs.)

ScreenShot8259

The downstairs decor has changed quite a bit since filming took place, however.  Gone are the brightly-colored walls and booths, and a sushi bar has since been installed.  Otherwise, though, the restaurant still looks very much the same as it did onscreen.

At one point while I was taking pictures, the hostess came up to ask why I had such an interest in the staircase.  When I told her of its famous onscreen appearance, she was shocked.  Apparently, she had not known that bit of trivia prior to speaking with me, which was shocking!  I mean, doesn’t information of that importance deserve a mention in the employee handbook?  😉

Izzy’s Deli from “Curb Your Enthusiasm”

Izzy's Deli Curb Your Enthusiasm (10 of 15)

Because our flight home from Switzerland landed smack dab in the middle of rush hour on a Friday evening, the Grim Cheaper and I decided to book a hotel and spend the night near the airport rather than make what probably would have been a four-plus hour drive to Palm Springs. It turned out to be quite the fortuitous decision, too, because the following morning, on our way back to the desert, we randomly stopped for breakfast (after first grabbing a Starbucks, of course!) at a Santa Monica delicatessen named Izzy’s Deli. While I had passed by Izzy’s countless times over the years, for whatever reason, I had never ventured inside, so I just about fell over when I spotted the above sign while walking through the front doors. Um, Deli to the Stars? Count me in! I was even further surprised when, upon sitting down, I pulled out my trusty iPhone to do some research on the place and discovered that it is also a filming location! Score!

[ad]

Izzy’s Deli was originally founded in August 1973 (almost four full decades ago!) by two Brooklyn-ites, Izzy Freeman and Ernie Auerbach. Freeman first moved to Los Angeles in 1953 and had dreams of opening a New York-style delicatessen, like the ones he had dined at as a boy, in the area. While volunteering at City of Hope National Medical Center in 1972, Freeman met Auerbach, who by that time was a successful Santa Monica-based developer. Auerbach decided to help Freeman on his quest and Izzy’s Deli became a reality the following year.

Izzy’s Deli became an almost immediate hit, with lines of hungry patrons often stretching around the block. The eatery, which has won such awards as “Best Designed Restaurant” and “Best All Night Restaurant”, is, amazingly enough, still owned and operated by Freeman (who calls himself “the Deli Lama” – LOVE IT) and his family to this day.

Stars have long been drawn to Izzy’s and the restaurant even boasts a Celebrity Wall of Fame consisting of autographed headshots to prove it. Just a few of the luminaries who have been spotted there include Eugene Levy, Walter Matthau, Florence Henderson, Hal Linden, Rod Steiger, Shaquille O’Neal, and Bill Clinton.

And while our breakfast was great, it is really hard for me to judge a restaurant based on breakfast alone. (It is pretty difficult to mess up eggs!) I am jonesing to return for lunch, though, because the lunch menu looks uh-ma-zing! Fried chicken sliders? Yes, please!

Thanks to the Complex City Guide, I learned that Izzy’s Deli has appeared in no less than three episodes of the television series Curb Your Enthusiasm. In the Season 5 episode titled “The Ski Lift”, Izzy’s was where Larry David (who plays himself) met Ben Heineman (Stuart Pankin) for lunch after hitting – and denting – his car. As you can see below, the restaurant was dressed quite a bit for the filming and all of the celebrity headshots were removed from the walls for the shoot. Boo!

In the following episode, which was titled “The Korean Bookie”, Larry once again met Ben at Izzy’s, this time to confront him over the fact that Ben has failed to fix his car with the $1,500 Larry had given him.

In Season 7 episode titled “The Bare Midriff”, Izzy’s popped up once again as the restaurant where Larry ate lunch with Jerry Seinfeld (who also played himself).

For the filming of this episode, the restaurant’s décor – including the Celebrity Wall of Fame – was left intact.

Drago Ristorante from “Entourage”

IMG_3695

Last Monday afternoon, I found myself having to kill a few hours of time while my car was being repaired at a mechanic’s shop on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, so I headed across the street to grab a latte and some lunch at a restaurant named Aroma Bakery & Café.  I had never before dined at Aroma, but thought the name sounded vaguely familiar and had a brief recollection that it had once been featured on the hit HBO television series Entourage.  Well, my memory is obviously not quite as good as I thought because as it turns out the restaurant was never actually featured on the show (it was Urth Café that I had been thinking of), but my mis-memory ended up to be very fortuitous.  While I was researching Aroma Bakery on my Blackberry, I came across a thread on the Chowhound website detailing numerous area restaurants which had been featured on Entourage and I almost fell off of my chair when I saw that one of the eateries mentioned was Drago Ristorante in Santa Monica, a place that I have actually dined at numerous times before, but had never realized was a filming location!  Then I almost fell off my chair once again when I received a call from the Grim Cheaper a few days later, informing me that his boss had just invited us to dinner at Drago Ristorante that Friday night!!!  Talk about synchronicity!  So, a few days later the GC and I headed out to the West Side for some dinner and some Entourage stalking.  Yay!

Drago Ristorante was originally opened in 1991 by native Sicilian chef Celestino Drago, who had previously founded Celestino restaurant in Beverly Hills.  Drago became a virtual overnight success and now, almost two decades later, it is a veritable Santa Monica institution.  Celestino has also become something of a celebrity chef along the way and has since opened up several other eateries including Dolce Forno bakery in Culver City, Entoneca Drago and Il Pastaio, both in Beverly Hills, Drago Centro in Downtown Los Angeles, and Celestino in Pasadena.  And I have to say that Drago is EXCELLENT!  I opted for the Petto Di Pollo, Funghi  Trifolati entrée which featured king trumpet mushrooms that were quite possibly the largest mushrooms I have ever seen in my entire life!  They were A-MA-ZING and I would have honestly been happy eating a handful of them by themselves, but I , of course, also chose to gouge myself on the chicken which was doused in a light truffle sauce.  And, oh my lord, was it good!  I should forewarn my fellow stalkers that the restaurant is on the pricey side, so if you are looking for a reasonable night out, Drago would not be a good choice.  If you don’t mind dropping a couple pennies, though, it is ENTIRELY worth the expense.

In the “Oh, Mandy” episode of Entourage, Vince Chase (aka Adrian Grenier) meets up with Mandy Moore, who played herself on the series, at Drago Ristorante in order to talk about the upcoming movie Aquaman, in which they are both set to star.  While the two are dining, Eric Murphy (aka Kevin Connolly), Johnny ‘Drama’ Chase (aka Kevin Dillon), and Turtle (aka Jerry Ferrara) wait for Vince in their car out in front of the restaurant.  Drago Ristorante also appeared in an early season episode of fave reality show The Bachelor, although I am not sure of exactly which episode or which season. The place is also something of a celebrity hot spot.  The GC’s boss saw Ed ‘Neill, Anne Bancroft, Mel Brooks, and Garry Marshall there all on one night a few years back!

Entourage Locations

On an Entourage side note – Thanks again to the Chowhound website, I recently discovered that HBO has a locations tab on the Entourage section of its website  which lists the main locales featured in each and every episode of the show.  HOW INCREDIBLY COOL IS THAT???  Why do ALL shows not do this????  Love it!  Love it!  Love it!

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  Smile

Rae’s Restaurant

untitled-2

untitled-3

Last weekend, while lounging by the pool in Palm Springs, I happened to open up People Magazine’s 100 Most Beautiful  issue and almost fell right off my lawn chair when I saw a pic of my girl Chelsea Handler posing at fave restaurant Rae’s in Santa Monica.  🙂  Chelsea was featured as one of the magazine’s “Pretty Funny” people and her entire photo shoot (which you can watch a behind the scenes video of here) took place at a small 50s style diner that is no stranger to the silver screen.  In fact, I’ve even stalked it once before!

img_2103-800

Even though I have already blogged about Rae’s, because it is one of my favorite places in all of L.A. and because my girl Chelsea did her People  photo shoot there, I just had to stalk it once again.  🙂   So, on Friday morning, bright and early, I dragged my dad out to Santa Monica to grab some breakfast at Rae’s.

img_2104-800

Rae’s has been a Santa Monica staple since it first opened up in 1958.  And it’s really no wonder why.  The diner serves up some of the best food in all of L.A.!!!!  And I am the pickiest eater known to man, so if I love the food, then you know it’s gotta be good.   🙂  Pretty much everything Rae’s serves is homemade on the premises using fresh ingredients, which is pretty unusual to find in a diner type setting.  Especially when you consider the prices!  Rae’s is extremely inexpensive – almost unbelievably so!  The bill for my dad and my breakfast came to a whopping $5.30!  I’m not kidding!!!!  My personal favorite Rae’s meal, though, has to be their turkey dinner, which is served with fresh whipped mashed potatoes, homemade stuffing and gravy, and turkey that is cut right off of an actual steaming turkey right in front of you.  Even my dad loved the place and is already making plans to bring my mom there in the near future.  🙂

Because Rae’s has such a unique look, location scouts have long been enamored with it.  Rae’s has appeared in COUNTLESS productions over the years, including my fave Win A Date With Tad Hamilton, where it stood in for the Frazier’s Bottom diner where Tad and Rosalie grabbed a bite to eat;

I honestly can’t recommend stalking Rae’s enough!!!!  Love the food, love the atmosphere, love the service!!!  You honestly can’t go wrong with this place!  🙂

On a side note, I am completely obsessed with the wishbone ring  Chelsea Handler was sporting in her People Magazine  photo shoot (you can just barely see it in the above photo).  The ring is a Jennifer Meyer (aka Mrs. Tobey McGuire) design and even though I just received a pretty special ring last weekend  :), I am so wanting it.  LOL

Joe’s Pizza

img_1367-800

Last week, on April Fools’ Day, CBS aired a television special entitled I Get That A Lot in which celebrities posed as normal, everyday people working in normal, everyday jobs.   Hidden cameras captured customers’ reactions as stars like Jessica Simpson, Ice-T, LeAnn Rimes, and Jeff Probst waited on them and told them that they were not, in fact, famous, but that they “get that a lot.”  🙂  While the show was a bit on the silly side, I, of course, LOVED it!  I so wish I could have been one of those customers!  But since I wasn’t, I figured I’d at least stalk one of the locations where I Get That A Lot  was filmed.  🙂

screenshot777

screenshot779

My favorite segment from I Get That A Lot  involved supermodel Heidi Klum whose assignment on the show was to spend a few hours serving pizzas at a small pizza place in Santa Monica named Joe’s.  Heidi was absolutely adorable in the segment and since I happened to be in Santa Monica this weekend, I just had to drag my boyfriend out to stalk the place.   🙂

img_1365-800

screenshot786

Joe’s Pizza is a very cute, but super tiny shop located just off the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica.  In fact, it is so tiny I am surprised they were able to film inside of it at all.  Joe’s was also extremely crowded – during the brief twenty minutes that we were there no less than fifteen people stopped in for a bite to eat – which is, I’m sure, why it was chosen for the hidden camera special.  I am guessing that the producers wanted Heidi waiting on as many people as possible.  The staff at Joe’s was extremely nice and answered all of my questions about the filming of I Get That A Lot,which took place almost a year ago.   They told me that Heidi Klum was very down to earth and a lot of fun to work with.  🙂

img_1362-800

While stalking Joe’s, my boyfriend and I just had to sample a few slices of their pizza.  And let me tell you, it is some of the best pizza I’ve ever had!   The Joe’s Pizza chain originated in New York in 1975 and has continuously been credited as New York’s best pizza.  In fact, New York Magazine  stated that “the quintessential New York slice is at Joe’s”.  The Santa Monica branch, which opened in 2007, is just as good as its New York counterpart and I am sure I will be frequenting it quite often.  Being that I am diabetic, a big ol’ slice of cheese pizza is probably the last thing I should be eating, but, hey, life’s short – sometimes you’ve gotta live it up.  🙂

img_1363-800

img_1364-800

Other famous fans of the restaurant, besides Heidi Klum, include Brooke Shields, Harrison Ford, Robin Williams, Tobey Maguire, Ben Affleck, Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman, and Everybody Loves Raymond’s  Doris Roberts.  Pictured above are photographs of Joe’s celebrity fans which line the walls of the small restaurant.  Love it!  Think someday they’ll put my photo on the wall?  🙂

[ad]

img_1361-800

The original Joe’s Pizza, which is located in Manhattan, has long been a favorite of location scouts.  It has appeared in Spiderman 2  (Peter Parker worked as a Joe’s pizza delivery boy), Sex and the City, Along Came Polly, and a Nike Commercial.  You can bet that Joe’s is at the top of my list of places to stalk on my next trip to NYC.  🙂

I HIGHLY recommend stalking Joe’s Pizza!  It’s a really fun place to grab a bite to eat and the pizza is to die for!  It’s truly like having a little piece of New York right here in L.A.  🙂  You can watch some clips from the I Get That A Lot special, including Heidi Klum’s stint as a Joe’s Pizza girl, here.
