Econo Inn & Suites from “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”

Econo Inn & Suites from CSI-17

Well, I am definitely on a hotel kick as of late, because here I am with my third post in a row of the inn variety.  Today’s lodging was featured prominently in the Season 9 episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation titled “Turn, Turn, Turn,” which just so happens to be the production in which a one Miss Taylor Swift made her acting debut.  When the episode first aired in 2009, I had not watched CSI in ages, nor was I a particularly big Swift fan (nothing against her, but at the time I was not familiar with much of her music – that’s no longer the case, today “Blank Space” is pretty much my go-to karaoke song!), so I am unsure of how or why I came to tune in.  Tune in, I did, though, and I absolutely loved it.  The episode is truly gripping, albeit profoundly sad.

“Turn, Turn, Turn” centers around Nick Stokes’ (George Eads) dealings with various crimes over a one-year period at a local “Las Vegas” lodging named the Park Pines Motel.  Taylor portrayed the manager’s daughter, Hayley Jones, in the episode.

Park Pines was the main location featured in the episode . . .

. . . and it was used extensively throughout.

I spent quite a bit of time searching for the Park Pines location back when “Turn, Turn, Turn,”  first aired, but never wound up tracking it down.  Then, while watching the Season 2 finale of How to Get Away with Murder, which was titled “What Did We Do?,” I spotted a motel that I thought might be the one I had been looking for.  Upon closer inspection, I realized it wasn’t, but I, of course, got the itch to start hunting again.  (For those interested, the motel featured in HTGAWM is the Hollywood Premiere Motel located at 5333 Hollywood Boulevard in Los Feliz.)

Thankfully, “Turn, Turn, Turn,” is available for streaming on Hulu – actually all 337 episodes of CSI are!  (Side note – the Grim Cheaper and I just got a subscription to Hulu and it is downright amazing!  Netflix is for sure the better platform for movies, but when it comes to TV, Hulu can’t be beat!  Every single episode of Law and Order: SVU is on there!  I mean, come on!)  So I re-watched it and was floored to see that the signage of several storefronts was visible across the street from the Park Pines in the episode.

One sign was for a salon named Hollywood Hair & Nails.  A quick Google search kicked back a listing for a shop by that moniker located at 10759 Magnolia Boulevard in North Hollywood.  Sure enough, when I went to that address on Google Street View, there was the Park Pines Motel located right across the street!  Woot!

Though CSI would have you believe that the motel was located in Las Vegas (gotta love the spectacular use of CGI Winking smile) . . .

. . . it can actually be found at 10750 West Magnolia Boulevard in North Hollywood.

In real life, the 25-unit motel is named Econo Inn & Suites.

Sadly, most of the areas that appeared in “Turn, Turn, Turn” are located at the rear of the property and are not visible from the street.

What can be seen, though, is very recognizable.

Several of the motel’s actual rooms were also used in the filming.

St. Vincent Court from “The Mentalist”

St. Vincent Court The Mentalist (23 of 25)

I cannot wait for the Secret L.A.-themed February issue of Los Angeles magazine to hit newsstands!  The City of Angels is chock full of tucked-away gems and I absolutely love discovering them.  The Grim Cheaper and I just stalked one, in fact, that is also a filming location – St. Vincent Court, which appeared in a recent episode of The Mentalist.  I first discovered the tiny and incredibly unique alleyway while on a Watson Adventures’ Downtown L.A. Movie Locations Scavenger Hunt with Mike, from MovieShotsLA, back in November 2010.  So I recognized it immediately when it popped up on The Mentalist and ran right out to re-stalk it while in L.A. last week.

St. Vincent Court is so named because it stands on the site of what was Los Angeles’ first college, Saint Vincent’s College.  The school was originally founded in 1865 at the Lugo Adobe House.  Two years later, it moved to a two-story building on 6th Street, between Hill and Broadway, in downtown L.A.  St. Vincent Court, which is actually a small alleyway, was known as St. Vincent Place at the time and served as the main pathway onto the campus.  In 1887, the school relocated to a new venue and the property subsequently served as a military compound.  Then, in 1906, it was chosen to be the location of the very first Bullocks department store.  The new store was constructed on the corner of 7th and Broadway, adjacent to St. Vincent Place, which was used as a pass through and for deliveries.  Bullocks soon purchased the building located across the alley and built an air bridge to connect the two structures.  The alley became dirty and dingy, as alleys tend to do, though, and in 1956 Bullocks and the City of L.A. teamed up to give the small space a facelift.  Façades and false fronts were built, awnings installed, a café and flower shop added, and the alley’s name changed to St. Vincent Court.  The site was dedicated in 1957 and became a California Registered Historical Landmark that same year.

St. Vincent Court is situated behind a rather unremarkable breezeway and is virtually hidden from view.  Despite the signage out front announcing its existence, one could easily walk by without even realizing it is there.

From the outside, it looks like any other of the city’s non-descript alleys.  Step inside, though, and you’ll find that it is anything but.

and sidewalk seating . . .

. . . . all add up to give the alley an amusement park/movie set/fake European/old world-feel.  To say that St. Vincent Court is unique is a vast understatement.  The place is like a Hollywood backlot that has been randomly plopped into the middle of downtown.

Despite some recent opposition to outdoor seating in the alley, mid-week St. Vincent Court is typically bustling with hungry downtowners seeking authentic European and Mediterranean-style meals at lunchtime.

In the Season 7 episode of The Mentalist titled “Orange Blossom Ice Cream,” Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) went undercover in Beirut in order to capture a terrorist.  No filming actually took place in the Middle East, though.  Instead production simply headed to . . . downtown Los Angeles.  The hotel where Patrick and Teresa stayed in the episode was none other than the Millennium Biltmore.

Two of the Biltmore’s hallways were used in the episode . . .

. . . but I am fairly certain that Jane and Lisbon’s suite was just a set built on a soundstage at Warner Bros. Studios where The Mentalist is lensed.

For outdoor filming, production head to St. Vincent Court.  The alley was first shown in the scene in which Patrick was taken to meet with terrorist Jan Nemic (Mark Ivanir).

Nemic’s lair was actually the back side of the Los Angeles Theatre.

Later in the episode, Lisbon and Jane dined on some manakish at a local Beirut eatery.

The restaurant scene was filmed at the Sevan Garden Kebab House, which is located at the northeastern end of St. Vincent Court.  Unfortunately, I did not get any photos of the place’s interior.  You can check some out here, though.

At the end of the episode, Lisbon and Jane are shown walking up the Biltmore’s stairs . . .

. . . and onto the hotel’s rooftop to share some orange blossom ice cream.

St. Vincent Court also appeared in the Season 1 episode of Moonlight titled “Out of the Past.”

The Bistro Garden

IMG_0804

A couple of weeks ago, while searching online for different filming locations from The Office, I came across some information about an area restaurant which not only appeared in The Office, but in countless other productions over the years, as well – the Bistro Garden in Studio City.  So, I, of course, dragged the Grim Cheaper right out to stalk it that very weekend!  And I think it is safe to say that we both pretty much fell in love with the place immediately upon arriving!  The Bistro Garden was first opened by Carolyn Niklas Pappas, the daughter of famed restaurateur Kurt Niklas (who founded the enormously popular celebrity hotspots Bistro and the original Bistro Garden in Beverly Hills) and her husband Gregory Pappas in 1990.  Two decades later, the place is still one of the Valley’s most popular restaurants – and definitely its most romantic!  According to this 2009 Los Angeles Times article, restaurant reviewer Max Jacobson said of the Bistro Garden that it “may have been the most beautiful restaurant he had ever dined in”.  And he wasn’t exaggerating – the place is exquisite.

 IMG_0807 IMG_0809

The Bistro Garden, which according to its website was modeled after a “European Wintergarden”, features a central indoor courtyard with a huge, peaked skylight roof, large French doors, and a perimeter of potted trees covered in twinkle lights, all of which give off the feeling of being outside in some sort of magical garden oasis.  And I swear they must pump some sort of rose fragrance through the air conditioning vents, because the place smells like fresh cut flowers – it’s AMAZING!

IMG_0810

The restaurant’s wood-paneled mahogany bar area, where the Grim Cheaper and I ate, definitely evokes a feeling of Old Hollywood, especially with the Michael Buble and Frank Sinatra music that plays in the background.  Love it!  🙂  The staff also could NOT have been friendlier and answered all of my silly little questions about the filming that has taken place there over the years.  Oh, and the food was absolutely incredible, too!  And even though the restaurant is a bit pricey, the Grim Cheaper thoroughly enjoyed himself and said he can’t wait to go back!  That in and of itself is a testament to how good the place is.

In the Season 6 episode of The Office titled “Double Date”, the Bistro Garden stood in for Paparazzo’s (LOL!), the Italian restaurant where Michael Scott (aka Steve Carell) hosted a birthday luncheon for Pam’s (aka Jenna Fischer’s) mom, Helene (aka Linda Purl).  It is there that Michael decides that Helene, at age 58, is far too old for him and promptly breaks up with her . . . in the middle of her birthday lunch.

Steve Carell also filmed a scene from 2005’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin at the Bistro Garden – the scene in which his character Andy attends a Date-A-Palooza speed-dating event.

ScreenShot5052

Randomly enough, The Office’s Mindy Kaling also made an appearance in that scene.

ScreenShot5030 ScreenShot5031

ScreenShot5034 ScreenShot5035

In 2010’s Valentine’s Day, the Bistro Garden was the spot where Julia Fitzpatrick (aka Jennifer Garner) confronted her boyfriend, Dr. Harrison Copeland (aka Patrick Dempsey), after finding out that he was married.

ScreenShot5026 ScreenShot5029

In 1997’s Liar Liar, the Bistro Garden was the spot where Jerry (aka Cary Elwes) proposed to Audrey (aka Maura Tierney).

ScreenShot5053 ScreenShot5054

ScreenShot5055 ScreenShot5056

Bistro Garden has popped up twice in Desperate Housewives.  In the Season 2 episode titled “Remember (1)”, the restaurant’s bar area was where Gabrielle Solis (aka Eva Longoria Parker) discovered (wrongly) via a newscast that her husband Carlos (aka Ricardo Chavira) had died in a car accident.

ScreenShot5057 ScreenShot5058

ScreenShot5059 ScreenShot5061

The restaurant was also where Zach Young (aka Cody Kasch) unveiled himself to be Gabrielle’s secret admirer in the Season 3 episode of Desperate Housewives titled “Not While I’m Around”.

ScreenShot5044 ScreenShot5045

 ScreenShot5046 ScreenShot5047

The Bistro Garden also showed up twice on fave show Beverly Hills, 90210 – first in the Season 8 episode titled “Toil and Trouble” as the spot where Cooper Hargrove (aka Christopher Orr) gifted Valerie Malone (aka Tiffani Amber-Thiessen) with a diamond necklace.

ScreenShot5062

And second in the Season 10 episode titled “Laying Pipe”.  But in actuality only the exterior of the Bistro Garden was featured in the “Laying Pipe” episode.

ScreenShot5063 ScreenShot5064

As you can see in the above screen captures, the interior filming took place elsewhere.  The restaurant was also featured in an episode of Melrose Place, but because I didn’t really watch that show, I am unsure of exactly which episode.

 IMG_0812

Bistro Garden is also something of a celebrity hotspot, as well.  Just a few of the celebs who have been spotted dining there recently include Taylor Lautner, Taylor Swift, and Steve Carell.

On a side note – I will not be publishing a new blog post for tomorrow, or for the next two Fridays.  Because of my upcoming wedding, I wrote all of my August blog posts in advance and unfortunately was only able to get enough done to publish four each week.  But I will be back on Monday with a whole new post.  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂
