Jay and Gloria’s House from “Modern Family”

IMG_4702

Once fellow stalker Robert, from the website Movie Locations and More, tracked down Phil and Claire’s house and Mitchell and Cameron’s duplex from the new hit series Modern Family, I set my sights on locating the modern-style abode where Jay (aka Ed O’Neill), Gloria (aka Sophia Vergara), and their son Manny (aka Rico Rodriguez) reside on the show.   For this task, I enlisted the help of fellow stalker Owen, who I am happy to report found the home’s location almost immediately, even though he had yet to ever watch even one episode of Modern Family!  LOL  All I gave him was the home’s street number and the general vicinity where I thought it might be located and, voila, just a few minutes later he texted me back with an address!  So, I, of course, immediately grabbed my camera and headed out to go stalk the place.

 IMG_4709

Jay and Gloria’s ultra-unique home is MUCH bigger in person than it appears to be on Modern Family.  For some reason, the establishing shots shown on the series only feature one angle of the residence.  In reality, though, the home has a whole other half which has never appeared on TV.  The house is so massive, in fact, that I couldn’t get all of if to fit in my camera lens, but you can sort of get an idea of its true size in the above photograph.  According to Zillow, the residence boasts five bedrooms, six bathrooms, and a whopping 6,359 square feet!

IMG_4705

The ultra-modern style home, which in real life is known as the Sinnot Residence, was built in 1992 by the architecture firm Abramson Teiger and, unfortunately, is not very visible from the street thanks to a large concrete wall which surrounds the property.  But have no fear because I managed to find a few interior photographs of the home online, which you can take a look at here.  🙂  Even with the exterior wall, though, the house is still very recognizable from Modern Family.   🙂

Quite a bit of on-location filming has taken place at the residence as well.  In the episode entitled “The Bicycle Thief”, Manny waits for his father to pick him up out in front of the house.

In the episode entitled “Coal Digger”, the entire family jumps into the house’s real-life pool fully-clothed.

On a side note – If you did not catch Chelsea Lately’s interview of Sophia Vergara which took place this past October, let me tell you, it is a MUST-SEE!   In fact, I might just go out on a limb here and say that it is my favorite CL interview EVER – and being that I watch her show nightly, that’s saying A LOT.  Sophia Vergara is absolutely HILARIOUS and to see her match wits with Chelsea Handler makes for some awesome TV!

Mitchell and Cameron’s House from “Modern Family”

Modern-Family-Mitchell-and-Cameron-House-16

The second locale that fellow stalker Robert, from the site Movie Locations and More, tracked down from fave new series Modern Family was the Spanish-style duplex where Mitchell Pritchett (aka Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron Tucker (aka Eric Stonestreet), and their newly adopted daughter, Lily, live on the show.  Because I have always had a thing for Mediterranean-style homes and because Mitchell and Cameron are my two favorite Modern Family characters, their house was the one from the series that I was most looking forward to seeing in person.  So, as soon as Robert gave me the address, I immediately dragged my fiancé right out to stalk the place!  And, amazingly enough, because my fiancé is also a big fan of Spanish houses, getting him to take me there didn’t actually require much arm-twisting on my part.  This was one filming location he was actually looking forward to stalking.  YAY!  🙂

And I am very happy to report that their abode looks exactly the same in person as it does onscreen in Modern Family.  In fact, the only difference I noticed between the real property and its television counterpart was the address number.  Because Mitchell and Cameron live in a duplex on the show, their building has two addresses – 2211 and 2213.  Makes sense, right?  But, even though the residence is also a duplex in real life, according to Zillow it only boasts one number – 2211.  Strange!  I am guessing that the 2213 sign shown in the above screen capture was just a prop that was brought in for the filming, which strikes me as odd being that it doesn’t match up to the real sign.  You’d think the producers would have wanted the two signs to look somewhat similar, but they don’t!  I guess that’s Hollywood for you, though!  😉

I HIGHLY recommend stalking Mitchell and Cameron’s Modern Family house as it is absolutely ADORABLE in person.  I have a feeling I am going to be obsessed with this home for a long time to come!  🙂

Ironically enough, an entirely different location stood in for Mitchell and Cameron’s house in the series’ pilot episode (pictured above), as was the case with the Dunphy home which I blogged about yesterday.  And, although the two locations do share some similarities – they are both duplexes, have wooden front doors, and arched entryways – in actuality they don’t look anything alike.

Marilyn Monroe’s Catalina House

Marilyn-Monroe-Home-Avalon-Catalina-Island-4

The most important item on my Catalina Island stalking list was the home where a very young Marilyn Monroe lived with her first husband James Dougherty during the years 1943 to 1944.  This was long before Miss Monroe became a Hollywood icon and household name, back when she was just a girl who was known simply as Norma Jeane Baker.  Norma married James in 1942 at the tender ago of 16.  Yes, you read that right – 16!!!  The family who was taking care of her at the time was moving out of state and rather than take Norma with them, opted to basically marry her off to one of the neighbor boys.  After only one short year of marriage, James was shipped off to Catalina Island to begin his basic training with the Merchant Marines.  Marilyn moved to Catalina with him and remained on the island for about a year and a half.  So, as you can probably imagine, I was absolutely busting at the seams to find her former home – a task that proved to be much easier than I had anticipated.

Marilyn-Monroe-Home-Avalon-Catalina-Island-1

While waiting at the Catalina Island taxi station yesterday, I happened to notice a flyer for a movie called Hollywood’s Magical Island: Catalina with a picture of Marilyn on it posted on a wall.  So, of course, I just had to ask the taxi operator if he knew anything about the movie, which he, sadly, didn’t.  So, I said, “Shoot!  I was hoping it might have information about where Marilyn’s Catalina house was located.”  Well, lo and behold, the cab operator got this funny look on his face and said “I know where her house is – it’s at 310 Metropole Avenue!”  I totally thought the guy was pulling my leg, as what would be the odds that the very first person I ask about her house would know its exact location???  Well, I must have some seriously good stalking karma because the guy really did know the correct address.  He told me that just about a year ago a Japanese film crew had descended on the island to make a documentary about the starlet and they actually filmed part of it at her house!  Turns out the taxi guy knew the location, because it’s located just three blocks up the street from his little taxi stand and he saw the filming!   Honestly, what are the odds?????  🙂

Marilyn-Monroe-Home-Avalon-Catalina-Island-2

So, of course, I immediately dragged my parents and my fiance right up the street to stalk Marilyn’s former residence.  🙂  Marilyn’s house is an adorable little beach bungalow that looks pretty much exactly like I pictured it would!  So darn cute!!!!  The home is actually a duplex, I believe, rather than a single family residence, as there seem to be two separate front doors, as you can see in the above photograph.

Marilyn-Monroe-Home-Avalon-Catalina-Island-7

But, being the overly-anal person that I am, I just had to ask around town for further verification that the house I had just stalked was definitely Marilyn’s former home.  I hate putting information on my blog unless I know with absolutely certainty that that information is correct.  And all I had to go on for this one was the word of a random cab operator.  So, I wanted further verification.    Well, as it turns out there are COUNTLESS stories floating around out there as to where the starlet’s former house is located.  While most locals I talked to had no idea that Marilyn had even lived on the island LOL LOL LOL, those few that did had differing stories.  I heard everything from “She lived somewhere on Whitley Avenue” to “No, no, no, her house is on Descanso Avenue between Beacon and Third Streets” to “Marilyn Monroe lived here?  Are you sure?”   And that last one came from a guy who WORKS AT THE CATALINA ISLAND MUSEUM!  LOL LOL LOL  Needless to say I was just a tad bit frustrated over all of the differing theories.  I mean, come on people!  This is Catalina history!  Someone  should know where MM lived!!!!  Finally, I ended up locating two different books about the history of the island, both of which said Marilyn’s former home was located on Metropole Avenue – just like the cab guy had said!  🙂  So, while I can’t say with absolute certainty that Marilyn Monroe did at one time live at 310 Metropole Avenue on Catalina Island, I am going to go out on a limb here and trust the word of two history books, a local taxi operator, and a Japanese film crew.  🙂

Neverland Ranch

Neverland-Ranch-Michael-Jackson-Memorial-25

Since we were in the area this past weekend celebrating the Fourth of July, I just had to drag my fiance out to Neverland Ranch yesterday to stalk pop star Michael Jackson’s former home.  I had actually stalked the Ranch once before, back in November of 2007, but I wanted to stop by once again to see what sort of pandemonium would be taking place there due to the pop star’s recent death.  Even though MJ hadn’t lived on the property since 2005, the home has been a mecca of sorts for the music legend’s fans ever since his sudden passing on June 25th.  Michael purchased the 2,600 acre property, which at the time was known as Sycamore Valley Ranch, from resort and golf course developer William Bone in 1988.  It was on this land that Jackson built his fantasy home, comprised of two railroads, a zoo, a ginormous swimming pool, a lake, a ferris wheel, a carousel, bumper cars, numerous other amusement park rides, an arcade, a private movie theatre, and a whopping twenty-two buildings.  He dubbed the property Neverland after the home of his favorite storybook character, Peter Pan, aka the boy who wouldn’t grow up.  In 2005, after being acquitted of child molestation charges, Jackson vacated the property and vowed never to return.  He said that during the police investigation, the officers who searched his property for evidence had “violated” it and he no longer felt at home there.  The property narrowly escaped foreclosure a few years later in May of 2008 when Jackson sold his loan and a part of his property rights to an investment company named Colony Capital LLC for about $35 million.  The land is currently owned jointly by both Colony Capital LLC and Michael’s estate.  At this point it is not known what is to become of the King of Pop’s former home, but there are talks of turning it into a sort of Graceland/Michael Jackson museum, which I think would be absolutely incredible to visit!  But, yesterday, I had to settle for just stalking the Ranch’s exterior.

Neverland Ranch Figueroa Mountain Road

On the way to Neverland, I started to get a little nervous that due to massive crowds we wouldn’t be able to get anywhere near the property.  About four miles away from the Ranch, the above traffic sign was posted which blinked the warnings “Slow Traffic Ahead” and “Caution: Congestion Ahead”.

IMG_2941-800

The city had also placed countless “No Parking” signs along the five mile stretch of rural road which leads to MJ’s former home.

Thankfully, while there were a lot of people paying their respects at Neverland Ranch yesterday, we were still able to stalk it quite easily.  As you can see in above photograph, there were a ton of media vans and reporters on site staked out to cover the goings-on at the Ranch.  Police were also on duty, patroling the area.

The media crews were camped out in front of the property to stake out their section of land , much like was the case over at Forest Lawn Memorial Park where Michael is set to be buried.

Neverland-Ranch-Michael-Jackson-Memorial-35

Neverland-Ranch-Michael-Jackson-Memorial-34

Also much like at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, CNN had apparently decided that they didn’t need to actually physically be on site to stake out their claim on a section of land, but that a set of cones would do.  LOL  I was so tempted to move their cones!  🙂

Neverland-Ranch-Michael-Jackson-Memorial-4

In anticipation of the many visitors to the Ranch, numerous porta-potties had been set up by the city, which I was very grateful for.

A few entrepreneurial individuals were actually selling Michael Jackson memorabilia, like t-shirts and buttons, out in front of his former home.  What’s even more amazing to me is that people were actually buying the stuff!  Nice, huh?

Neverland-Ranch-Michael-Jackson-Memorial-12

Neverland-Ranch-Michael-Jackson-Memorial-15

The entrance to Neverland Ranch looked much different yesterday than when I visited it in 2007.  In an ironic juxtaposition, while the last time I visited the Ranch when Michael was still alive, the property was quiet and almost barren, yesterday it was full of life and absolutely crawling with people.    I’m guessing there were about fifty fans outside of the Neverland gates who had come to pay their respects to the singer.   While there, my fiance spoke to two gentlemen from Spain who had flown all the way to California just to visit the Ranch and pay their respects to Michael!  Not everyone was there for the pop star, though.  At one point, a man in an SUV drove up to where my fiance was standing and asked him what all the commotion was about.  My fiance was like “Um, this is Michael Jackson’s house.”  The guy, who had obviously been born under a rock, had absolutely NO idea that he was driving past one of the most famous celebrity homes on earth.  LOL LOL LOL

Practically every square inch of the Ranch’s front entrance was covered over with personalized signs, balloons, stuffed animals, and flowers that people had left for Michael.  Signs had even been hung from the trees!  It was absolutely incredible to see!

As I mentioned the last time I stalked the place, unfortunately there isn’t a whole lot of Neverland to see from the road.  But my fiance managed to snap a few pics through the entrance gate.  There seemed to be quite a few people on duty at the Ranch, including gardeners, security guards, and what looked to be ranchers of some sort.

Because the perimeter of Neverland isn’t really fenced in, floodlights had been set up to ward off nighttime trespassers.

Los Olivos, the sleepy town where Neverland Ranch is located,  is no stranger to the spotlight.  The tiny town, which is made up of only one main street that stretches four short blocks, stood in for Mayberry in the 1986 made-for-TV movie Return to Mayberry.   And a small local restaurant named Los Olivos Cafe was the spot where Miles, Jack, Maya, and Stephanie shared a romantic meal in the 2004 movie Sideways.

IMG_2953-800

The town is something of a celebrity hotspot, as well.  A few years ago, my fiance ate lunch next to Jennie Garth and her husband Peter Facinelli at Los Olivos’ Panino restaurant.  But while I’ve been to Los Olivos quite a few times, sadly I’ve never encountered a celeb there.  🙁

IMG_2955-800

The above sign, which I spotted in a gift shop window yesterday morning, pretty much perfectly sums up the tiny, sleepy town.  🙂

IMG_2936-800

For those fans who would like a more in-depth view of Neverland, you can read an AMAZING article and see some INCREDIBLE pictures taken by a photographer named Jonathan Haeber who snuck into the Ranch back in December of 2007 here.  TMZ also posted  some great pics of the interior of Michael’s actual home which was located on the Neverland Ranch property.  Matt Lauer also  gave viewers an indepth tour of Michael’s home just a few days after his untimely death, which you can watch here.  And finally, you can see a video Larry King posted of the Neverland property here.  My dad and I had the pleasure of stalking the Michael Jackson Exhibit by Julien’s Auctions earlier this year.  My photos of the exhibit, which included all of the pop singer’s Neverland Ranch furniture and much of his music memorabilia, can be viewed here.

It was very nice to be able to pay my respects at the Ranch yesterday, especially since I was not one of the chosen few who received tickets to Michael’s memorial at Staples Center.  🙁   I had so been hoping to win those.  So, instead I will be watching the event live at home, along with the rest of the world.

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Where The American Idol Contestants Live

img_1209-800

Even though American Idol  is not a show I regularly watch, I was completely floored to find a two page article in this week’s US Magazine  featuring the mansion the current Idol contestants are calling home.  I love me some celebrity real estate!   And while US  didn’t give the exact location of the Idol  pad, it did publish several photos of the 35,000 square foot manse and stated that it was located somewhere in Bel Air.  Well I, of course, got to cyberstalking and it wasn’t long before I had located the Mediterranean style home.  And I immediately dragged my boyfriend right out to stalk it.  🙂

screenshot691

screenshot694

In years past, the Idol  contestants were put up in an exclusive apartment building called The Marlow which I blogged about last year.  Well, the economy may be bad, but the Idol  finalists are movin’ on up, because this season they are residing in a rented four story, nine bedroom, twenty bathroom (I’m not kidding!) mansion that sits on over an acre of well-manicured land.  According to one real estate website, the home, which was originally built in 1927, boasts two pools (one indoor, one outdoor), a gym, a screening room, a bowling alley, an elevator, an indoor basketball court, a steam room, a jacuzzi, and private guest quarters.  It sounds like Disneyland!  I swear, put in a Starbucks and I’d never leave the place.  🙂  FOX has also sprung for a live-in chef, who cooks up healthy meals for the Idols  daily. You can see great indoor photos of the house on some real estate websites here and here.  And you can watch a video of the Idols moving into their new home here.

[ad]

img_1213-800

img_1214-800

Sadly, there’s not a whole lot of the home that is visible from the street, excluding some large exterior gates.  I could see about ten cars parked in the driveway, though, so it seems that the Idols were allowed to bring their cars with them to California.  🙂

img_1216-800

There are numerous differing online reports as to whether the Idol  mansion is currently for sale.  From what I can gather from the many conflicting accounts I’ve read, I believe the mansion was on the market for quite some time back in 2006 at a price of $43 million.  After over 200 days with no sale, that price was dropped to $29,995,000.  After an $18,500,000 deal fell through in 2008, the house was eventually taken off the market altogether.  It is currently available for lease at a rate of $85,000 per month.  The sign pictured above was on the ground in front of the mansion when I was stalking it.  I wonder if one of the Idol  hopefuls took it down in hopes that they would be able to buy the mansion themselves after landing a record deal.  LOL If you have the $85,000 a month to shell out to rent the place, it should be available in about ten weeks when Idol  is over.  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking! 🙂

Only in L.A.!

img_0122

The other day while I was on my way to acting class I experienced one of those “Only in L.A.” moments that I love so much. 🙂 While walking past Lucky Strike Lanes Bowling Alley on Highland Avenue in Hollywood I noticed a vending machine selling Movie Star Maps and I just about died laughing. LOL You gotta love it! I mean in every other city in America there are plenty of street-side vending machines selling newspapers, local publications, and maybe even the occasional apartment locator magazine. But L.A. is unique. L.A. is special. Here, right on the street smack dab in the middle of Hollywood, we have a vending machine which sells maps with the addresses of all of your favorite movie stars for the bargain price of $5. God, I love L.A.! 🙂

img_0125

Even though the Movie Star Maps vending machine is not a filming location – that I know of! – I still just HAD to blog about it. 🙂

The Largest Home in Pasadena!

img_0645

If you thought the Benson mansion was huge, you ain’t seen nothing yet! 🙂 Just down the street is another immense property – one that actually has the distinction of being the LARGEST home in Pasadena!!! The 31,415-square-foot home has 15 bedrooms, 19 bathrooms!!!!!, and sits on close to five acres. I mean, come on, does any one person honestly need that much room???? 19 bathrooms????  When I first moved to Southern California, in the year 2000, this mansion was actually under construction.  The building was finally completed about two years ago and has sat empty ever since. So strange!  Sadly, the original residence that sat on this site, which was featured featured as the Clampett’s new upscale digs in the 1993 movie The Beverly Hillbillies, burned to the ground in a massive fire in 1998.  The monstrosity pictured above is what was built in its place.

img_0647

However, all is not lost, as the newly built mansion has a Hollywood resume of its own. Besides being featured in an LG commercial, the property showed up in a 2006 episode of CSI: Miami. I am fairly certain that the episode which filmed on the property was Season 4’s “Driven”, in which a group of rich women are robbed at gunpoint at an upscale hotel spa. I think the mansion’s indoor pool and spa stood in for the hotel and spa in the episode. It’s easy to see why producers chose to use this home as the hotel, as the mansion and surrounding property are so unbelievably huge and ornate that they could easily pass for a resort.

img_0646

From what I understand the mansion has never been lived in and has been on the market for the past two years for the meager asking price of $52 million. You can take a look at its now-defunt real estate website here. According to this article, the mansion is one of the ten most expensive homes in the United States! And this article has some great pics of the unbelievable dwelling and its five acre property.

Until next time, Happy Stalking! 🙂
