The Hyatt Regency Valencia from “Twilight”

IMG_4964

The other Los Angeles area filming location from Twilight that I mentioned in last Wednesday’s post is the Hyatt Regency Valencia Hotel.  In Twilight, the Hyatt stood in for the Phoenix area hostelry where Bella (aka Kristen Stewart), Alice (aka Ashley Greene), and Jasper (aka Jackson Rathbone) hid out while on the run from the evil vampire James (Cam Gigandet) towards the end of the movie.  In reality, the hotel is, of course, not located anywhere near Arizona, but instead can be found just about four miles away from the home that was used as Bella’s mom’s house in the flick.  So, of course, since I was already in the area last week, I just had to stalk the place.  🙂  I found this location thanks again to the link that fellow stalker Kerry sent me last April while the first Twilight movie was still in production.  Thank you, Kerry!  🙂

IMG_4951

The Hyatt is, sadly, featured only briefly in Twilight, but I am happy to report that it looks very much the same in person as it did onscreen.   In the scene featuring the Hyatt, Bella, Jasper, and Alice are first shown hanging out in a hotel room discussing their current predicament.  And while the exterior set up shots for that scene were indeed filmed at the Hyatt Regency Valencia, after looking at photographs of the hotel’s rooms online, I am fairly certain that the interior filming took place elsewhere.  My best guess is that the hotel room scene was either filmed on a soundstage or at a real hotel located somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, where the rest of the movie was filmed.

IMG_4958

We next see Jasper and Alice in the hotel’s lobby area waiting to check out.  And, as you can see in the above photographs and screen capture, that particular scene was actually shot on location at the Hyatt Regency Valencia and the lobby area still looks pretty much the same in person as it did in Twilight.  Even the red flower paintings hanging behind the reception desk are there in real life.  🙂  Love it!

ScreenShot2551

IMG_4962

In a subsequent scene, Bella is shown rushing out of the Hyatt Regency Valencia’s main entrance and into a waiting taxi cab.    And that pretty much covers the entire Twilight segment that took place at the Hyatt!  LOL  All told, the scenes probably last a little under 45 seconds.  As I said in the previous Wednesday’s post, though, it’s better than nothing!  🙂

IMG_4957

While stalking the hotel, I happened to strike up a conversation with one of the bellhops who truly could NOT have been nicer to me.  He even took the photograph of me featured at the top of this post.  🙂  According to the bellhop, the Hyatt is actually an oft-used filming location and has been featured in such series as CSI: Las Vegas, NCIS, and the reality show Make It Or Break It.  The bellhop said that a scene from Twilight was also filmed in the hotel’s parking garage, but he wasn’t sure which scene.  He also informed me that Robert Pattinson actually stayed at the Hyatt Regency Valencia for a few days during the filming of Twilight.  LOVE IT!   The Hyatt Regency Valencia is a really beautiful hotel, with a large swimming pool, picturesque gardens, and a beautiful wedding courtyard (pictured above).  I highly recommend stalking the place or even staying there while visiting the L.A. area.  Who knows – you may even wind up in RP’s former room!  🙂

On a very random side note: Earlier today, while reading the fabulous book Twilight: Director’s Notebook, I learned that the scene pictured above, in which Bella and Edward kiss for the first time, was actually filmed in Pasadena!  Apparently, the scene was originally filmed on location in Oregon, but director Catherine Hardwicke never ended up getting the exact shot she wanted.  So, a few months later, when the cast and crew was back in California, some reshoots were done, one of which was the Bella/Edward kiss scene.  For the re-shoot, a replica of Bella’s bedroom was built at the Elk’s Lodge in Pasadena.  🙂  So, as it turns out, there are actually three L.A. area locations that were featured in Twilight.  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Bella’s Mom’s House from “Twilight”

IMG_4930

Well, it took me long enough, but on Monday afternoon I finally decided to crawl out from that rock I’ve been living under for the past year by sitting down to watch the movie that the rest of the world has long been obsessed with – Twilight.    Yes, it’s true – while it seems that pretty much every other human being on the planet has gone Bella and Edward crazy, until earlier this week I had yet to watch – or even read – the saga’s first installment.  I’m not exactly sure why I avoided the movie for as long as I did, being that I am usually right in line with the masses when it comes to the latest pop culture obsessions, especially the teeny-bopper ones.  For some reason, though, Twilight  never piqued my interest.  But then, this past Friday night, I met up with fellow stalkers Lavonna, Beth, Kim, and Melissa, who were in town from Cincinnati, and they were all quite disappointed to learn that a stalker like myself had yet to see the movie.  So, on Monday afternoon, I decided to bite the bullet and finally sat down – Starbucks iced latte in hand – to watch Twilight in its two hour entirety.  And I am shocked to report that I didn’t hate it.  I didn’t exactly love it, either, but I definitely didn’t hate it.  It was actually pretty enjoyable.  The cinematography was nothing short of breathtaking and Robert Pattinson wasn’t so bad to look at, either.  Don’t hate me ladies, but before seeing the movie, I thought RB was absolutely hiddy.  Now I can understand what all the fuss is about, though.  There’s definitely just something about him.  And I am happy to report that while most of Twilight was filmed on location in the Pacific Northwest, the movie did feature two locations in the Los Angeles area, most notably Bella’s mom’s house.  So, of course, I just had to stalk it! 🙂

IMG_4932

Thanks to my good friend and fellow stalker Kerry who sent me this Twilight  link well over a year ago, I knew that Bella’s mom’s house was located somewhere in the Valencia area.  I just wasn’t sure exactly where.  So, yesterday, after watching the movie, I got to cyber-stalking and came across this page on Wikipedia, which stated that the home was located near Highlands Elementary School.   And even though Wikipedia isn’t always the most reliable of sources, I decided to begin my search in the neighborhood surrounding the school.  And sure enough, just about ten minutes later, I came across the house!  YAY!   So, early this morning, I made the journey out to Santa Clarita to do some Twilight  stalking!  Because Bella’s mom’s house is supposed to be located in Arizona in the movie, quite a bit of it was changed for the filming, including the paint color, the landscaping, and the exterior decor.  Numerous fake cactus plants were also added to the surrounding area.  You can see photographs of the house all decked out for the filming on this fansite, which details the experience of two stalkers who made a trek from Arizona to California  – in the middle of the night, no less –  just to watch Twilight being filmed!  Two women after my own heart, I swear!   (The photographs of the house are featured on the website under the heading “More Pictures on the Set 4/29 and 4/30”.  You have to scroll down a ways to see them.).

Bella’s mom’s house is actually only featured very briefly in the movie.  I’m talking like 30 seconds brief.  LOL  But since it is one of the only Twilight sites located in the state of California, I figured stalking it was better than nothing.  🙂  The abode first shows up in the very beginning of the movie, when Bella and her mom and step-dad are shown moving out of the property.

The house shows up once again towards the end of the movie, in the scene in which Bella is led to believe that the evil vampire James has kidnapped her mother.

Even though the house looks a bit different in person than it appeared onscreen, to all of those L.A. area Twilight fans, I still highly recommend stalking it!  It’s a whole lot cheaper than traveling all the way to Oregon and Washington where the rest of the movie was filmed.  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Heidi and Spencer’s New House

IMG_4858

Ever since Season 5, Part II of The Hills premiered back in September, I have been getting email requests to locate the house Spencer and Heidi moved into in the debut episode which was entitled “It’s On Bitch”.   Thankfully, fellow stalker Virginie tracked down the duo’s new home pretty much immediately after the episode aired and posted a comment on my site which included the house’s address and a link to it’s former real estate website.  YAY!  Thank you,  Virginie!  Anyway, because I’ve been knee-deep in writing posts about New York filming locations for the past six weeks, I had yet to make it out to the Hollywood Hills to stalk Speidi’s new pad.  But, for the sake of my friendship with Mike, from MovieShotsLA – who for weeks has been hounding me to return to my roots, so to speak, and do some L.A. area blogging – this weekend I decided to finally drag my boyfriend out to Spencer and Heidi’s new abode.  Better late than never, right?

IMG_4861

Sadly, though, Speidi’s new home is located at the top of a private road and I was not able to get a very good look at it.  🙁  Such a bummer, but I am guessing that its location on a private drive is exactly why they chose to live in the house – that way they can keep all of us stalkers at bay.  🙁   The photograph above shows the view of the road leading up to Heidi and Spencer’s house as viewed from Hollyridge Drive.  The duo’s house is located at the very top of the road, alongside two other homes, and therefore cannot be seen at all from the main drag.

IMG_4864

IMG_4868

IMG_4873

But, if you continue on about 100 yards past the private road, you can catch a slight glimpse of the back of the house and its deck area, which is better than nothing!  🙂

 ScreenShot2528

In the “It’s On Bitch” episode, Spencer rents the two bedroom, three bath, 1,270 square foot home pictured above behind his new wife Heidi’s back.  And while I would die to live in this house, when Spencer first takes Heidi to tour it, she says it looks “cold and modern” and “like a porno pad”.  LOL LOL LOL   Sorry, Heidi, but I am going to have to side with your hubby on this one.  The house is A-MA-ZING!

ScreenShot2534

I mean, the view of the Hollywood sign alone makes the place worth renting!  LOVE IT!

ScreenShot2529

ScreenShot2530

And, unlike Whitney Port’s apartment on The City, a different location is not used for the exterior shots of Speidi’s house on The Hills.  As you can see on the home’s real estate website, the same place is used for both the interior and the exterior shots shown on the series.

Speidi telescope2

And even though something tells me that the dynamic duo no longer lives in the house – and quite possibly never did, but just used it for filming purposes – I was still pretty floored to spot their telescope, which can be seen in the background of various Hills episodes, through the abode’s back windows.  SO LOVE IT!  🙂

Big THANK YOU to Virginie for finding this location!!  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

My Coffee With Andre – Agassi, That Is!

IMG_4835

A few years back, an email entitled “You Know You’re From Los Angeles When . . . “ which was comprised of a list of “Only in L.A.” scenarios circled the World Wide Web.   My personal favorite item on the list was number 28 which stated, “The guy at 8:30 in the morning at Starbucks wearing the baseball cap and sunglasses who looks like George Clooney actually IS George Clooney”.  LOVE IT!  Well, Thursday morning, I had my very own “Only in L.A.” moment at a local Starbucks, when I realized that the guy in front of me in line who looked like tennis superstar Andre Agassi actually WAS tennis superstar Andre Agassi.   As it turns out, Andre was in town for a book signing at my fave bookstore, Vroman’s, and was grabbing a quick coffee beforehand.  So, of course, for my blog’s sake, I just had to ask him to take a picture with me.  I was a little nervous about doing so, though, as just a few weeks prior some friends and I happened to run into Bruce Willis while dining at the Jerry’s Deli on Beverly Boulevard.  We had the good fortune of  finishing our meal at pretty much the exact same time as Bruce and when we found ourselves in the valet line next to him while waiting for our cars, I asked him if he wouldn’t mind posing for a photograph with us, to which he replied “Doubtful.”    Being that my question pretty much warranted either a yes or a no answer, I’m not even really sure what he meant by that, but needless to say I did not get my photo.  🙁  He did shake our hands, though, so I guess that’s something.  So, when Andre Agassi said that he’d be happy to pose for a picture with me, I was absolutely elated!   A man who I am guessing was his publicist took the above photograph of us – which is arguably the worst photo I’ve ever taken in my life LOL – and afterwards said “I think you’re going to like this one!”  I laughed and replied, “Well, being that I’m not wearing any make-up right now, I’m not so sure”, to which Andre said, “Well, I’m not wearing make-up either, so we’re even!”  LOL LOL LOL  Three other women were in Starbucks at the time that all of this took place and, let me tell you, Andre’s presence caused us all to act like a bunch of giddy little school girls.   I’m pretty sure the noise level inside Starbucks increased more than one decibel while the four of us fawned over him.  My three new friends also asked for their pictures to be taken with Andre and he happily obliged.  In fact, he was so incredibly friendly and gracious I almost couldn’t believe it.  He even waited patiently while I tried to figure out how to use the camera on one of the girl’s iPhones.   And, to top it all off, when I was on the way out the door a few minutes later, Andre looked up from his espresso and called out “Bye!”  Sigh!  What a nice guy!  I am so going to have to check out his new book now!

  IMG_4838

Seeing Andre on Thursday got me thinking.  Everyday I receive emails from readers seeking advice on how and where to spot celebrities in L.A.  And, while I did write a post about celebrity hot spots earlier this year, I realized that the best advice I can give on seeing a famous person in Los Angeles is to just simply KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN AT ALL TIMES.  The truth is you just never know when or where you might spot a celeb.  I’ve seen stars in such mundane spots as the grocery store, Target, Rite Aid, the mall, Joann’s Fabrics, and Michael’s Craft Store.  And, of course, at Starbucks.  Other celebs I’ve spotted at various Starbucks in the L.A. area include Sophia Loren, Bradley Whitford (on three different occasions!), Jane Kaczmarek, Britney Spears, Peter MacNicol, Maxine Bahns (from The Brothers McMullen), David Strathairn, Danielle Panabaker, Mark D. Espinoza (who played Andrea’s husband Jesse on the original 90210), Kevin Dunn, Jamie Lynn Spears, who was with her mother Lynn Spears, and Reese Witherspoon.  Although to be fair, Reese wasn’t actually at a Starbucks when I spotted her.  I saw her walking out of a yoga studio located directly next door to the Starbucks I happened to be walking into.  But that still counts, don’t you think?  🙂  Being that I visit a Starbucks on average of three times a day, though, I guess my record of seeing celebs there isn’t actually all that good.  LOL  But my point is that when you’re in L.A. you just have to keep your eyes peeled at all times!  And always, always have your camera with you!  🙂

Owain1

Owain2

As if to further drive this point home, while doing some shopping at Larchmont Village with my fiancé on Saturday afternoon, I happened to spot both Anthony John Denison, who plays Lieutenant Flynn on TNT’s The Closer,  and Owain Yeoman, who plays Detective Wayne Rigsby on The Mentalist (pictured above), dining at restaurants across the street from each other.  I, of course, noticed both actors immediately, but my fiancé walked RIGHT BY them completely oblivious.  Honestly, I think they both could have come up and bitten him on the nose and he still wouldn’t have realized who they were!  As I mentioned above, you just gotta keep your eyes open!

IMG_4855-1

And let me just say here that I was completely struck by how much better looking Owain Yeoman is in person than he comes across onscreen, as was the case back in August when I saw him during a filming of The Mentalist.  I mean, even my fiancé had to admit that the guy looked quite a bit different in person.  🙂 And even though Owain is one of my new celebrity crushes, because he was eating lunch when we spotted him, I didn’t want to bother him for a photograph.  But, as luck would have it, when driving away from Larchmont Village, my fiancé happened to get stuck at a stop sign RIGHT IN FRONT of Owain’s table, so, I just had to snap a quick pic.  🙂 Owain definitely noticed me taking his photo and didn’t seem too happy about the situation, but being that he is oh so dreamy, I just couldn’t help myself.  🙂  Sigh!

Until next time, Happy Stalking! 🙂

Stalk It: The Starbucks where I ran into Andre Agassi is located at 408 East Colorado Blvd., in the Paseo Colorado Shopping Center, in Pasadena.  Larchmont Village, where I spotted Owain Yeoman and Anthony John Denison, is a quaint little shopping district located on North Larchmont Blvd. in between Beverly Boulevard and West 1st Street.  Anthony John Denison was eating at Louise’s Tratroria, which is located at 232 N. Larchmont Blvd.  Owain was eating at Le Petite Greek, which is located at 127 N. Larchmont.

Jefferson Market Garden

IMG_4243

Another Sex and the City  location that I re-stalked while in New York last month was Jefferson Market Garden, the spot where the series’ ever-present cynic Miranda Hobbs finally married long-time boyfriend Steve Brady in the Season 6 episode entitled “The Ick Factor”.  I first stalked this location back in December of 2006, but at the time had absolutely no idea that it was a filming location and from one of my favorite television shows, no less.  My fiancé had dragged me to the garden and it’s adjacent library due to the place’s historical significance, and, while I enjoyed visiting it, I took virtually no photographs while there.  So, this year, I vowed to return, camera in hand!  And return, I did!  Thank goodness my family scheduled this year’s New York trip in early October, though, as I had not previously realized that Jefferson Market Garden is only accessible to the public seasonally, during the months May through October.

img_0540

Jefferson Market Garden’s name is derived from the fact that in the early 1800’s a produce market, named after former president Thomas Jefferson, existed on the site where the garden and library now stand.  In 1873, that market was torn down and a courthouse built in its place.  Jefferson Market Courthouse, which opened in 1877, was designed by Calvert Vaux, one of the men responsible for designing Central Park, and architect Frederick Clarke Withers.  In 1885, the Gothic-style building (pictured above) was voted the fifth most beautiful in the entire country.  In 1931, an eleven story detention center for women was constructed on the lot directly adjacent to the Courthouse.  And while the Courthouse served the Third Judicial District of New York from 1874 to 1945 and the detention center even housed a certain famous prisoner named Mae West at one time, by the 1940’s, both structures had fallen into serious disrepair and were threatened with demolition.  Thankfully New York preservationists stepped in and convinced the City of New York to renovate the Courthouse and turn the space into a Public Library.  They also petitioned to have the dreary detention center torn down and a garden created in its place.  Which is exactly what happened.  The library opened to the public in 1967, the detention center was destroyed in 1973, the garden was planted in 1974, and the rest, as they say, is history.  Jefferson Market Garden, which measures one third of an acre, opened to the public in 1975 and, while owned by New York City Parks & Recreation, remains a community project, cared for by local Manhattanites.

IMG_4241

 IMG_4239

IMG_4240

Today’s garden consists of a central lawn, a koi pond, a rose garden, beds of various annuals, and several benches upon which to sit and enjoy the view.  It seems like the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon.  In fact, while we were stalking the place, quite a few people were seated on the benches talking and enjoying the warm Autumn weather, while several artists stood nearby and painted the scene on portable easels.  It looked like something straight out of a movie.  🙂   Jefferson Market Garden is a truly beautiful place, and not surprisingly, has been the site of numerous nuptials ever since Miranda and Steve tied the knot there back in 2004.

ScreenShot2509

ScreenShot2510

On Sex and the City, the garden first showed up in a beginning scene of the “Ick Factor” episode, in which the recently engaged Steve and Miranda have some issues while walking home after doing their weekly shopping.  Not only do Miranda’s shopping bags explode during the scene, spilling their contents onto Greenwich Avenue, but Steve also steps in a wad of chewing gum, causing Miranda to proclaim “We should get married right here in this mess!”, to which Steve replies, “We’re gonna have to if I can’t get this gum off.”  LOL LOL LOL   Ahhh, I so love Steve!

ScreenShot2500

ScreenShot2499

It is then that Miranda looks up and notices the picturesque garden setting situated right in front of them and announces to Steve that she thinks it might just be the perfect spot for the two of them to get married.

And get married there, they do, in a beautiful ceremony which took place later in that very same episode, which, as I’ve mentioned before, has to be one of my favorite episodes of all time.   Carrie’s closing line of “For better or for worse, we were all ourselves that day, just the way Miranda wanted it.”, which she utters just after Samantha’s announcement that she has breast cancer, never fails to bring a tear to my eye!

On a sad side note – Jefferson, the restaurant where Miranda and Steve held their wedding reception in the “Ick Factor” episode (pictured above), has since been closed.  🙁   Such a bummer, as I had so wanted to stalk that place.   You can see photographs of the former Jefferson restaurant here and here, though.

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  : )

Stalk It: Jefferson Market Garden is located on Greenwich Avenue, in between Sixth Avenue and West 10th Street.  The garden is open every afternoon, except Mondays, during the months of May through October.  You can visit their website here.  Miranda and Steve’s wedding reception took place directly across the street from the garden at the now-defunct Jefferson restaurant, which was formerly located at 121 West 10th Street.

Scout Bar from “Sex and the City”

IMG_4427-1

Yet another Sex and the City location that I stalked while in New York last month was O’Nieals Grand Street Bar, which stood in for Scout, the watering hole owned by Carrie and Miranda’s ex-boyfriends, Aidan and Steve, on the show.  And even though I had actually stalked this location during last year’s New York vacation and also blogged about it, because I had not been able to venture inside, it was a place I had always planned on returning to.  So, since my good friend Steffi, who is an even bigger fan of Sex and the City than I am (if that’s at all possible) and who has always loved the character of Aidan, accompanied me to New York this year, I decided there was no time like the present!  On this particular occasion, though, nothing was going to stop me from journeying inside!  🙂  And, let me tell you, I am so glad I did, because O’Nieals’ interior is nothing short of magnificent.

ScreenShot2486

One look around O’Nieal’s dark Mahogany interior and it’s easy to see why producers chose to use it as the bar that Carrie’s furniture designing former boyfriend built.  Upon seeing Scout for the first time on the show, Carrie says “There was no sign of him, but he was everywhere.  In the mahogany bar, wood floors, carved ceiling.  The whole place looked and felt just like Aidan.”  And in real life, that same sentiment is true – the place truly does look and feel just like the character played by John Corbett.  So much so, in fact, that it’s hard to believe the bar wasn’t a set built by production designers specifically for the series.

IMG_4429-1

IMG_4430-1

O’Nieal’s decor consists almost entirely of dark, shiny, hand-carved wood and, let me tell you, it is absolutely gorgeous.  But my favorite part of the bar had to be its amazingly intricate ceiling, which unfortunately I just could not get a very good photograph of.  🙁  But take my word for it, the ceiling is beautiful.  O’Nieals has a definite old New York vibe to it and, I am happy to report, looks exactly the same in person as it did onscreen in Sex and the City.  The staff also could NOT have been nicer and allowed me to take all of the photographs I wanted, even though I wasn’t dining at the establishment.  On a side note – Being able to take pictures inside of bars and restaurants is just one of the many reasons that I love New York so much.  In L.A., unfortunately, there are many venues that don’t allow any sort of interior photography.  And, while part of me understands an establishment’s desire to keep stalkers like myself from taking pictures of their celebrity patrons, for the most part I think the whole thing is just plain ludicrous.  A few months back my fiancé and I grabbed some cocktails at a place called the Writers Bar in Beverly Hills.  The upscale (read: snooty) bar had numerous autographed scripts displayed on their walls and when I went to a photograph in front of one which had been signed by Julia Roberts, the manager came rushing over and demanded that I put my camera away.  Dumbfounded, I asked him why, to which he replied “We do not allow cameras here due to our high-profile clients”.  LOL LOL LOL  Now, if I had been trying to take a photograph of a celebrity sitting nearby (and by the way, my fiancé and I were the only two people in the entire bar at the time), I can totally understand the manager requesting that I put my camera away.  But it was very obvious what I was taking a picture of and why and being that we had just shelled out $25 per drink, I found the whole thing highly ridiculous and my fiancé and I vowed never to return.  Which we haven’t.  But thankfully, in my many visits to New York, I have NEVER EVER – not even once – been told to put my camera away – even in cases when celebrities actually were dining right next to me.  🙂  But, I digress.  Anyway, as I said before, O’Nieals is a very hip, absolutely gorgeous little spot and I HIGHLY recommend stalking it.

The bar was also featured in the Season Four episode entitled “Time & Punishment”, in which Carrie shows up at Scout only to discover Aidan flirting with a skeezy bartender named Shana.  And, even though Steve continued to own the bar throughout the rest of Sex and the City’s six year run, for some reason, it never again appeared onscreen.

On a sad side note – While in New York, I was also dying to visit Collins Bar, the spot where Miranda first met Steve in the Season 2 episode of Sex and the City  entitled “The Man, The Myth, The Viagra” (pictured above).  Unfortunately, though, the beloved dive bar closed its doors in July of 2007 and the building that formerly housed it is in the process of being torn down to make room for a new hi-rise condominium development.  Such a bummer!!!!  You can see some great pictures of the former Collins Bar here and here, though.

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Whitney Port’s Apartment from “The City”

Whitney-Ports-Fake-Apartment-The-City-9

As fate would have it, last year’s New York vacation ended just a few weeks prior to the series premiere of the MTV Hills spin-off entitled The City.  That, of course, meant that I had to wait almost an entire year to stalk any of the locations featured on the new show.  🙁  And, while I have to admit that I don’t even really like the series all that much, at the top of this year’s NYC stalking list were quite a few locales used on it.  One of the locations I most wanted to stalk was the building where series’ heroine/burgeoning fashion designer Whitney Port supposedly lived during Season One.  But, of course, as is often the case on The City, things weren’t quite as cut and dry as they seemed.  Thanks to fellow stalker Virginie, who posted a comment on my site back in January with a link to this article from the blog Curbed, I found out that the building shown as Whitney’s on the show isn’t where the reality starlet actually lived.   So much for The City being a “reality” show.  LOL  But even though Whitney didn’t actually live in the building featured on the series, because the place is a filming location, I, of course, still had to stalk it!  🙂

ScreenShot2476

Whitney-Ports-Fake-Apartment-The-City-3

The building where “Whit” supposedly lived on The City is ultra-tall, ultra-modern, ultra-luxurious, and just oh-so-New-York!  And, thanks to the dwelling’s quintessential New York feel, it’s not very hard to see why producers chose to use it as the residence of the girl Page Six Magazine dubbed as “The New Carrie Bradshaw”.  The building is the ideal home for a modern-girl-about-town.  And I would just about give my left foot to live there!  🙂

ScreenShot2465

Whitney-Ports-Fake-Apartment-The-City-2

Ironically enough, though, Whitney wasn’t too keen on the place when she first toured it with then-boyfriend Jay Lyons in the Season One episode entitled “The L Word”.  Upon first seeing the apartment, Whitney said, “I kind of envisioned myself whenever I moved here that I would be, like, in one of those shorter brick buildings.”  Um, you mean, like, a brownstone, Whitney?  LOL LOL LOL  Boyfriend Jay changed her mind, though, and later in that same episode Whit became a resident of the building, where she remained through the show’s first season.  Or so MTV would have you believe.  But we know different, don’t we?  🙂

As you can see in the above screen capture, the balcony of Whitney’s apartment doesn’t look at all like the balconies of the building shown in the show’s exterior shots, which is how the bloggers over at Curbed were able to figure out that MTV was trying to pull the wool over its viewers eyes.  The building Whitney actually lived in is located less than a mile away from her “fake” building and is called the Elektra.  Sadly, I was not able to stalk that location during this year’s trip, though.  🙁  And, as fate would have it, during The City’s Second Season, which just premiered last month, Whitney moved out of her hi-rise digs and into a “shorter, brick building” somewhere in Greenwich Village.  And while I have not figured out the exact location of that spot yet, I definitely plan to stalk it during next year’s New York trip.   🙂

Whitney’s “fake” building, which was designed by architect Stephen B. Jacobs, is fairly new to the New York skyline.  The property was just recently completed in 2006 and is comprised of 390,000 square feet of living space which is divided into 250 individual condominium units.  The building features a 24-hour doorman, a concierge, a lobby, a garage, a business center, a gym, a yoga room, a massage room (and here I don’t even know what a massage room is!), a sauna, a residents’ lounge complete with fireplace, a children’s playroom, a conference room, and an indoor pool and spa.  Individual apartments in the building boast floor to ceiling windows, marble baths, hardwood floors, sweeping views, and private balconies.

A side note about my photographs – I accidentally took the above pictures from the opposite end of Fifth Avenue from where the The City’s set-up shots were taken.  If you want to snap a pic from the exact spot where the screen captures were taken, head over to the corner of Fifth Avenue and West 32nd Street.  🙂

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Stalk It: Whitney Port’s “fake” apartment building from The City is located at 325 Fifth Avenue.  In reality, Whitney lived at a building named The Elektra, which is located at 290 Third Avenue.

A Haircut With Nicole from Shear Genius

P1020272

This year, while visiting New York, my mom, of course, booked her annual haircut appointment with famed stylist Nick Arrojo, from the TLC makeover show What Not To Wear.   As I first blogged back in December of 2007, for years my mom has been absolutely obsessed with the hair guru and had long dreamed of booking a session with him.  So, for her birthday two years ago, the whole family got together and surprised her with an appointment with Nick during our annual New York vacation.  Well, Nick’s cut turned out so incredibly fabulous that my mom won’t even consider visiting the Big Apple now without also making an appointment with him.  It has become one of our annual New York traditions!  🙂  And, of course, this year was no different!

P1020269

P1020280

P1020292

P1020297

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – Nick Arrojo is absolutely AMAZING.  I don’t know what it is, but he must have some magic dust in that razor of his, because my mom’s hair always turns out absolutely incredible whenever he cuts it.  Sadly, we have yet to find a stylist in LA who can even come close to doing whatever it is he does to my mom’s hair.  Some people just have an innate talent, I guess, and Nick is definitely one of those people!  Not only that, but he has to be one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met.  He is a total sweetheart and he always makes my mom feel like a movie star when she visits the salon.  I honestly can’t say enough about the guy – he’s simply FABULOUS – and I can’t recommend booking an appointment with him enough!  Even at $500 a cut – which is truly outrageous – he’s worth every single penny!  Which is why I can’t believe that he’s no longer appearing on What Not To Wear.  For some incredibly odd reason, Nick was replaced this season by celebrity stylist Ted Gibson, who, in my humble opinion, is just plain BLAH!  And the fact that Ted is a former stylist of that little homewrecker Angelina Jolie only adds to my dislike of the guy.  UGH!  Even though, due to Nick’s absence, my mom no longer watches What Not To Wear, I can pretty much guarantee that no matter what happens with the show, she will still be returning to Nick for a haircut year after year.

P1020327

Oh, and here’s my mom’s new ‘do!  🙂  Unfortunately, it’s not the best picture of it, though, because just prior to it being taken, she got caught in the rain and her hair, like mine, does not do well in inclement weather.  🙁

[ad]

Those of you who read my blog regularly know that last year while visiting New York I was lucky enough to get my hair cut by Nick’s former assistant and Shear Genius Season 2 Second Runner-Up Nicole Obert and she did an absolutely amazing job!!!!  And while I really wanted to book another appointment with her during this year’s New York vacation, the Grim Cheaper talked me out of it.  🙁  I swear, why I listen to him I’ll never know!!!  LOL  Anyway, during my mom’s appointment, my fiancé, fellow stalker Owen, and I stopped in to Arrojo Studio so that I could say hi to Nick and Nicole and, let me tell you, Nicole gave me quite the talking-to!!!  She was very disappointed that I had not booked an appointment with her this year despite the Grim Cheaper’s many objections.  And, as fate would have it, Nicole just so happened to have an opening in her following day’s schedule.  So, I, of course, immediately snatched said opening right up.  🙂  Being that I had just gotten a haircut about ten days prior to leaving for New York, the Grim Cheaper was NOT at all happy about that decision.  LOL LOL LOL  He kept saying, “Didn’t you JUST get a haircut???”

So, bright and early the following morning, my parents, my fiancé, and I all headed down to SoHo so that I could once again get my hair cut by Nicole.  And, let me tell you, I had an absolute blast!!!! Nicole is so much fun to spend time with that I’m fairly certain I would book an appointment with her even if I didn’t like the way she cut hair, just so that I could hang out with her for an hour or so.  🙂  She’s really that much fun!  Like me, Nicole just recently got engaged, so the two of us spent a lot of time talking about wedding planning.  And, let me just say here that Nicole’s ring, which was designed by her fiancé and features a huge rock flanked by two butterflies made entirely out of diamonds,  is absolutely amazing!!!  I LOVED it.  Oh, and I just about died when Nicole told me that she had run into Cynthia Nixon, aka Miranda from Sex and the City, a few days beforehand on a New York City subway!  She said she immediately thought of me when she saw her.  Love it!  🙂  And how incredibly cool is it that CYNTHIA NIXON actually rides the subway???? Also LOVE IT!

P1020337

  P1020332

Nicole ended up cutting quite a bit of length off my hair and once again gave me a whole new look that was completely different from last year’s whole new look!  🙂  I find it incredible that she was able to create two such varying and unique haircuts the past two years when she really didn’t have that much to work with being that my hair was already short!   I honestly don’t know how she does it!  Needless to say, my hair turned out absolutely ADORABLE.  I LOVE it.  Nicole somehow always manages to make me look so much hipper and edgier than I normally do!  And, amazingly enough, while last year’s cut was pretty hard for me to style on my own, this year’s was incredibly easy.  I can safely say that it is the easiest-to-maintain haircut I’ve ever had in my life!  In fact, my new ‘do is so simple to style that my getting-ready time each morning has literally been cut in half!  So LOVE that!  I did have to purchase a new flat-iron because of it, though, much to the Grim Cheaper’s chagrin.  When I came home with it, he said “Wow, this haircut is the gift that just keeps on giving, isn’t it?”  LOL LOL LOL  But even though the GC is not a fan of my new ‘do, everyone else in my life is.  The compliments on it have been literally non-stop.  🙂  Oh, how I wish I could go to Nicole regularly.  🙁

. . . and after.

I honestly cannot recommend booking an appointment with either Nick or Nicole enough!!!!  They are both incredible stylists and my mom and I feel so fortunate to have found them!

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Stalk It: Arrojo Studio is located at 180 Varick Street in New York’s SoHo neighborhood.  To book an appointment with Nick or Nicole, you can call (212)242-7786.  You can also visit the Arrojo Studio website here.  Haircuts with Nick cost $500, but he often runs specials, announced via his website, where you can book them for around $350.  A haircut with Nicole will only set you back $68.

Bethesda Fountain and Terrace

img_0320

Just around the corner from the Central Park Boathouse Cafe, which I blogged about on Friday, is another New York landmark known as Bethesda Fountain and Terrace.  Because the area is one of my favorite places in all of New York, I’ve actually stalked it numerous times during my many trips to the Big Apple, but, for some reason, never thought to blog about it.  Which is actually quite ironic being that the fountain has been immortalized in countless movie and television productions over the years.  So, with the mindset of ‘it’s better late than never’, today I thought I’d give it a go.  🙂  The first time I visited Bethesda Fountain and Terrace was back in 2004 during my very first trip to Manhattan.  My fiancé and I happened upon the fountain while walking through Central Park and I immediately recognized it from an episode of fave show Sex and the City and just about flipped out.  Since that time, I’ve made it a point to visit the area at least once whenever I’m in New York.  On a side note – Due to the below freezing temperatures, fountains in Manhattan are turned off during the winter months, which is why Bethesda Fountain is not running in the above photograph which was taken in December of 2004.

Take a look at the guy sitting by himself....

P1020375

Bethesda Fountain, which measures 26 feet tall and 96 feet in diameter and is one of the largest fountains in New York, was the only sculpture that was included in “The Greensward Plan”, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux’s original design blueprint for Central Park.  In the plan, the fountain and terrace area were  intended as a gathering place for park-dwellers, a picturesque spot for Manhattanites to congregate and socialize.

The statue that flanks the top of the fountain is named “Angel of the Waters” and was designed by Emma Stebbins, sister of Central Park Commissioner Henry G. Stebbins.  The statue, which was built in Germany, took over seven years to construct and wasn’t unveiled until 1873, an additional five years after its completion.  The idea behind the neoclassical statue was based on “The Pool of Bethesda”, a man-made bath in Jerusalem, which, as legend had it, was often frequented by angels who could cure the ailing.  The fountain was built in commemoration of the Croton Aqueduct, Manhattan’s very first fresh water system, which had been completed thirty years prior.  The statue’s largest angel measures eight feet tall and holds a lily in one hand symbolizing the purity of New York’s water, while blessing the waters of the fountain with her other hand.

British architect Jacob Wrey Mould designed the two large staircases which flank the terrace, as well as all of the area’s ornamental details, which include wildlife carvings and over 16,000 intricate Minton tiles.

IMG_4203

The Terrace and Fountain area quickly became the focal point of Central Park and even boasted an outdoor restaurant at one time.  But during the 1970s, Central Park fell into a terrible state of disarray and, sadly, remained that way for over a decade.  When my parents checked into the Plaza Hotel during their very first trip to New York back in 1980, the concierge told them in no uncertain terms NOT to enter the Park under any circumstances.  Today, Central Park is so incredibly beautiful and picturesque, that it is EXTREMELY hard for me to imagine it ever being a scary place.  During that time, Bethesda Fountain became a haven for the homeless and drug addicted of New York and was even given the nickname “Freak Fountain”.  It wasn’t until 1980, when the Central Park Conservancy stepped in with their plan to restore the Park to its original grandeur, that things began to change.  The Conservancy’s first step was to renovate the fountain, which had actually been left dry for over a decade.  A few months after the fountain was restored, the Terrace area was also renovated.   Today, Bethesda Terrace is so grand and so tranquil that it’s hard to believe at one time it was one of the most dangerous areas of the park.

Because it is so incredibly picturesque, Bethesda Terrace is one of the most photographed areas of Central Park and has long been a favorite of movie producers.  As mentioned above, I first recognized the area from a Season 2 episode of Sex and the City.  In that episode, which was entitled “The Freak Show”, Carrie meets a “normal” guy while sitting by the fountain one spring day and, in an unprecedented move, gives him her unlisted phone number.

Bethesda Fountain and Terrace is an absolutely beautiful spot and I honestly can’t recommend stalking it enough!  It has long been considered “the heart of Central Park” and is definitely a New York must-see!

The Central Park Boathouse Cafe

Central-Park-Boat-House-2

One of the locations that I was most excited about stalking while in New York last month was a little restaurant named the Central Park Boathouse Cafe, also known as the Loeb Boathouse.  And although I’ve stalked this location once before – and even blogged about it – because the restaurant is not open for business during the winter months when we usually visit New York, I’d never been able to actually eat there.  Until my most recent trip to the Big Apple, that is.  This year, because my parents had only ever seen Manhattan during the cold winter months, we decided to change things up a bit and schedule our annual NYC vacation in early October.  And I couldn’t have been more excited, as that meant that I’d FINALLY be able to grab a bite to eat at the famous Boathouse Cafe!  🙂

IMG_4211

IMG_4212

The first Central Park Boathouse was originally built in 1873 by park designer Calvert Vaux and cost $2,360 to construct.  Vaux’s design consisted of a two-story Gothic inspired structure with open terraces lining the second level.    For over eighty years, the Boathouse provided park-dwellers with a place to dock and store their vessels, grab a bite to eat, or just simply people-watch.  But, in the 1950s it became clear that the eighty year old structure was in desperate need of a renovation.  Thanks to a $305,000 donation from American Metal Company founder Carl M. Loeb and a $100,000 supplement from the Parks foundation, the original Boathouse was torn down and a new building was assembled in its place.  The new structure, which was dubbed the Loeb Boathouse and was constructed in the neo-classical style by designer Stuart Constable, opened in March of 1954 and remains standing to this day.  Although a bit more upscale than its predecessor, the Loeb Boathouse still provides visitors with a place to grab a bite to eat or an evening cocktail, rent a rowboat, or just simply take in the beautiful park scenery.

Central-Park-Boat-House-1

Because the Loeb Boathouse is so incredibly picturesque, it has, of course, been featured countless times over the years in various movie and television productions.  With its lakeside setting, frequent rowboat passersby, and view of of the park and Manhattan skyscrapers in the distance, it’s really no wonder why producers have returned to film there time and time again.

IMG_4208

IMG_4209

Just inside the Boathouse’s main entrance is a large display of photographs from the many filmings that have taken place there over the years.  So love it!

IMG_4207

And, let me tell you, I just about died when I noticed an old picture of my girl Marilyn Monroe on the wall!  As it turns out, though, according to the hostess that I talked to, the picture was not actually from a movie that was filmed on the premises, but was a candid that was taken while Marilyn rowed a boat one evening on the nearby Central Park Lake.  You can just make out the outline of the Boathouse above her left shoulder in the photograph.  So cute!

ScreenShot2365

Ostensibly missing from the Boathouse’s picture wall, though, was a photograph of fave show Sex and the City, which filmed a VERY memorable scene from the Season 3 episode entitled “Cock A Doodle Do” at the restaurant.  When I asked the hostess about it she said, “Sex and the City was filmed here?  Really?”  LOL LOL LOL  In the episode, Carrie reluctantly agrees to a lunch date with Mr. Big at the waterside cafe, but, as often happens with those two characters, trouble, of course, ensues.  Just before Carries enters the restaurant, she stops outside to make a quick call to Miranda on a nearby payphone.  During the course of their conversation, Miranda makes Carrie promise that no matter what happens during the lunch she will NOT let Big kiss her.  (On a side note – I tried to stalk Carrie’s payphone, but, unfortunately, it was nowhere to be found, which leads me to believe that it was either a prop that was brought in solely for the filming or it was a real payphone that was removed sometime after the filming took place.   Such a bummer!)

 ScreenShot2366

 ScreenShot2367

 ScreenShot2368

Carrie then proceeds to enter the restaurant and spots Big waiting for her in the Bar & Grill area, which is pretty much the exact spot where my family and I sat while dining there.  🙂

ScreenShot2370

ScreenShot2371

 ScreenShot2375

ScreenShot2373

Upon Carrie’s arrival, Big immediately goes to kiss her and, in backing away to avoid him, Carrie winds up falling into the water, pulling Big down with her.  The two immediately collapse into fits of laughter until Carrie realizes that her Christian Dior purse has gone missing, at which point Big screams out “I’ll get it!” and then proceeds to heroically dive under the water to save the purse . . .

ScreenShot2372

. . . with the whole rest of the restaurant looking on.   LOL LOL LOL  So love that episode! 🙂

img_0322

So, of course, when I first visited the Cafe back in 2005, I just had to take a picture reenacting that scene.  Too bad I couldn’t also reenact Carrie’s Richard Tyler dress from that scene, too!  LOL  🙂

The Boathouse is also the spot where Sally lunched with her friends, one of whom was Carrie Fisher, at the beginning of the 1989 romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.

ScreenShot2381

ScreenShot2384

 ScreenShot2383

In the more recent 27 Dresses, the Boathouse figures prominently as the place where Katherine Heigl’s character’s parents were married and where she also intends to someday hold her own wedding.  As fate would have it, though, her younger sister gets engaged first and books the restaurant for her wedding instead.  Towards the end of the movie, a scene takes place at the Boathouse in which Katherine attends a food tasting for the upcoming nuptials with her secret crush, who also just so happens to be her sister’s fiancé, Edward Burns.

[ad]

The Boathouse also appeared in the 2005 movie Little Manhattan and in an episode of the Showtime series Nurse Jackie.  The upcoming Drew Barrymore/Justin Long movie entitled Going the Distance also apparently did some recent filming at the Boathouse and a fake Boathouse set was even built in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park this past summer for the Tina Fey/Steve Carell comedy Date Night.

IMG_4201

Besides being a filming location, the boathouse has also long been a favorite dining spot for celebrities.  In recent years, stars like Lindsay Lohan, Becky Newton, Orlando Bloom, and Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr have all been spotted eating at the Cafe.  The Boathouse has also played host to numerous celebrity events, including the premiere after-parties for the movies Pride and Prejudice, Mamma Mia, and My Sister’s Keeper

IMG_4215

IMG_4214

And while the Boathouse was at the very top of my list of locales to stalk during this year’s trip, as fate would have it, we actually got “stuck” there after being caught in a brief rainstorm while walking through Central Park.  Because the Cafe was the nearest shelter we came to and because it was on my stalking list, we decided to kill two birds with one stone and ducked inside.  🙂  Thankfully the rainstorm didn’t last more than a few minutes and once it was over we immediately grabbed seats on the patio in the Boathouse’s Bar & Grill area (pictured above) and ordered up a few cocktails.  And, I have to say, the place was A-MA-ZING!  It is worth a visit just for the setting alone!  I honestly can’t recommend stalking the Boathouse Cafe enough!  It has to be one of my favorite places in all of New York.  It is the absolute PERFECT place to spend a sunny – or even a not so sunny, as was the case for me – Manhattan afternoon.

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂
