Patrick Swayze’s Former Apartment

IMG_3316

Ever since the Grim Cheaper purchased the Dirty Dancing: Limited Keepsake Edition DVD for me this past Christmas, I have become just a tad bit obsessed with finding out more behind-the-scenes information about the movie.  So, the other day I picked up Patrick Swayze and wife Lisa Niemi’s autobiography which is titled The Time of My Life and, let me tell you, I’ve hardly been able to put it down since.  It is an absolutely FABULOUS book and Patrick Swayze was an absolutely AMAZING man!  The unbridled love that he had for his wife is riveting to read about and heartbreaking at the same time, now that he has since passed away.  Let’s just say that theirs was not a typical Hollywood union.  Patrick married Lisa on June 12, 1975, when he was only 22 years old and she was only 19, and they remained together and completely devoted to one another throughout the rest of his life.  While the majority of married actors surrounding him on movie sets were conducting on-set affairs during filming, Lisa accompanied Patrick on each and every single shoot – whether he was filming in Los Angeles or in the far reaches of Africa – and I think that is part of what made their marriage so strong.  If you have any interest whatsoever in learning more about Patrick Swayze or the movie Dirty Dancing, I honestly cannot recommend The Time of My Life enough!  The book also doles out quite a few stalking addresses, including one of the couple’s first Los Angeles apartments, which I ran right out to stalk yesterday!

IMG_3332 IMG_3311

Patrick and Lisa first moved to Southern California in 1979, after spending several years together in New York.  The two first lived in the ground-floor apartment of a home owned by two older women in the Hollywood Hills.  Of his new landlords, Patrick said, “The women upstairs were real characters, and one of them seemed always to have a tumbler of scotch in her hand.”  LOL  In 1980, after living in that apartment for a little over a year, the couple moved to what Patrick describes in the book as “an apartment in West Hollywood, on La Jolla Avenue”.  Well, as soon as I read those words I knew I was going to have to track down that apartment!  Thankfully though, Patrick made the job extremely easy for me by putting in the book the above photograph of himself, along with his mother and Lisa, standing outside of their apartment in which an address number of “623” was visible.  Because he had described the place as being in West Hollywood, I had assumed it would be located on North La Jolla Avenue, but when I searched for that address via Google street view, nothing matched up.  So, I then looked at the building located at 623 South La Jolla Avenue and there was his apartment, looking almost EXACTLY the same as it had back in the early 80s when the Swayzes had called the place home!. So incredibly cool!

Patrick Swayze garage

In the book, Patrick says that his apartment came with a two-car garage that he and Lisa turned into a woodworking shop as the couple ran a carpentry business on the side, which kept them afloat financially in between acting gigs.  I am guessing that their garage was the one denoted with the pink arrow in the above photograph.

IMG_3334 IMG_3307

But, for whatever reason, in the above photograph, which was included in the book, Patrick is shown posing with his brand new DeLorean car outside of the garage belonging to the neighboring apartment building.  That area, too, though looks very much the same today as it did back in the early 80’s.

IMG_3315 IMG_3314

IMG_3312 IMG_3310

Shortly after moving into the apartment, the Swazyes found themselves broke with only $3 in their bank account.  Patrick says, “The saving grace of our new apartment was the orange tree in the backyard, which ended up feeding us for the difficult weeks we spent trying to pull our financial life together.  We managed to scrape together enough coins to buy a jar of peanut butter and a loaf of bread, and that, with the oranges, was what we ate.”  Just a few weeks after going broke, fate intervened and Patrick landed the lead role of “Bandit” in the television series Renegades.  His career took off from there.  The couple continued to live in the La Jolla Avenue apartment for the next few years as Patrick’s fame continued to grow.  But after the television series North and South aired in 1985, the actor became a household name and the Swayzes had to move from their beloved, but entirely-too-accessible apartment.  Patrick says, “Lisa and I also realized that we’d now have to take steps to protect our privacy.  Even in those pre-internet days, there were still paparazzi all over Hollywood, not to mention some overzealous fans who weren’t above staking us out at home.  When I got the role of Orry Main, it allowed us to buy a five-acre ranch, where we could keep horses and enjoy nature without being disturbed.”  That ranch, which they named “Rancho Bizarro and which Lisa still owns to this day, is located on Lemoncrest Avenue in Sylmar, about twenty miles north of Los Angeles.

[ad]

Another location that Patrick talks about in The Time of My Life – one that I was absolutely DYING to stalk until I found out that it was no longer there – was the Harkness Theater at Lincoln Center in New York.  In September of 1973, Patrick, who was at the time a member of the Harkness Ballet Company, was hired to pose for artist Enrique Senis-Oliver who had been commissioned by oil heiress Rebekah Harkness to paint a large mural in her new theatre, which was then just being built.  The enormous painting, which Patrick says “stretched from the stage to the very top of the proscenium and down both sides”, was titled Homage to Terpsichore and it featured hundreds of nude men dancing.  Incredibly, all of those men were Patrick!  Over a period of several weeks, Enrique had used the actor/dancer as the model for each and every single male featured in the mural!  Sadly though, that mural is no longer as the Harkness Theatre was torn down in 1977, only a few short years after it had been built.  So incredibly sad!  You can see photographs of part of Patrick’s mural here and here.

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  Smile

Dirty Dancing: The Limited Keepsake Edition DVD

ScreenShot6522

Well, I unfortunately do not have a new blog to post for today and it is all the Grim Cheaper’s fault!  You see, on Christmas Eve morning he gifted me with an early Christmas present – the Blu-ray DVD of Dirty Dancing: The Limited Keepsake Edition, which contains hours upon hours of extras including a feature devoted to all of the locations used in the film.  As you can probably imagine, I just about died upon opening it and spent that entire day watching the special features and therefore did not have time to write a new post for today.  I did find out a huge amount of Dirty Dancing location information from it, though, and now know where pretty much every single scene in the movie was filmed.  And you know what that means!  Oh yes, the Grim Cheaper and I will be taking a trip to Pembroke, Virginia and Lake Lure, North Carolina to stalk all of the DD locales in the very near future!  For those who are wondering, the majority of the Kellerman hotel scenes – including Baby’s cabin, the dining hall where the family eats, the gazebo where she takes her first dance lesson and gets partnered up with Mrs. Shumaker, and the kitchen where Penny was found crying – can all be found at the Mountain Lodge Hotel in Pembroke, West Virginia.  The hotel even offers a Dirty Dancing tour in which guests stalk each and every location featured in the movie and also get to reenact scenes while there!  So incredibly cool!  All of the staff-type scenes – including the dance hall segments, the rehearsal scenes, and the staff cabin scenes – were filmed at the now-defunct Chimney Rock Boys Camp in Lake Lure, North Carolina.  Sadly, most of the Lake Lure locations were either demolished shortly after the movie was filmed or destroyed in a fire a few years later, but Baby’s steps remain and it is those steps that I am longing to see more than anything else!  But, until I actually get out there, I offer this AMAZING link of photographs taken by a woman and her husband who somehow managed to pinpoint the exact spots where filming at Lake Lure took place.  I seriously think that woman might just be my new best friend!  Smile

ScreenShot6523

If you are at all a fan of Dirty Dancing, I honestly cannot recommend enough picking up your own copy of the Limited Keepsake Edition DVD!  Other special features include two commentaries, some original screen tests, numerous cast interviews, deleted scenes, extended scenes, alternate scenes, a trivia reel, a making-of featurette, and an outtakes reel (which is actually the only disappointing extra on the entire DVD as the segment only lasts about 30 seconds).  The edition also includes a keepsake book about the movie AND, best of all, a $50 coupon to stay at the Mountain Lake Hotel.  LOVE IT!   Smile

Anyway, I promise to be back tomorrow with a whole new post, so, until that time, Happy Stalking!  Smile

Halloween 2009 at The Nest!

IMG_9046

ScreenShot2255

I hope my fellow stalkers had an absolutely fabulous Halloween 2009!  As I’ve mentioned many times before, Halloween is downright my favorite holiday.  I pretty much look forward to it all year long!  So, today I thought I’d take a little break from my New York blogging to write a post about this year’s Halloween adventure, which took place, yet again, in Palm Springs, where my fiancé and I had been invited to a little All Hallows’ Eve party.  As you know, the two of us always dress up as either a famous celebrity couple or characters from a movie or TV show for Halloween.  Well, after seeing Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story On Stage back in June, I decided that this year my fiancé and I just had to dress up as Baby and Johnny!  And yes, I always plan my costumes that far in advance.   🙂  I told you, I LOVE Halloween.  I practically live for the holiday!  So, pretty much immediately after seeing the Dirty Dancing stage show, I started scouring the internet and local thrift shops for a pink chiffon dress that would resemble the frock Baby wore in the movie’s famous final dance sequence.  And, unbelievably, I came up completely empty-handed!  I am still in shock, actually, that no one, not even an EBay seller, had a dress like Baby’s to hawk!!  In fact, the only pages I came across while performing a Google search for “Baby’s pink dress from Dirty Dancing” were entries posted from women like myself who wanted to know where they could purchase an outfit similar to Baby’s.  Thankfully, in answer to one of those queries, a woman had posted a link to a dress pattern that was a pretty close match to the one Jennifer Grey wore in the movie.   So, I begged and pleaded with my mom, who is an excellent seamstress, to make me Baby’s dress.  Begrudgingly she agreed, and did quite the excellent job on it, I might add.  THANK YOU, mom!  🙂

IMG_4681

Because my fiancé and I were dressed as one of filmdom’s most famous dancing couples, before heading out to our Halloween party we just had to hit up the hottest dance spot in the entire Coachella Valley – a little place known as The Nest.  The Nest is actually a combination bar/eatery/piano lounge/dance club which first opened up in 1965 and is now known as Indian Wells’ most famous restaurant and night club.  My fiancé and I refer to it, though, as the “Cougar Den”.  Contrary to how it might sound, trust me when I say that the nickname is a term of endearment as The Nest is quite simply one of my very favorite places to visit in all of Palm Springs.  And while the food is great, the drinks are strong, the music is live, and the atmosphere is hopping, none of those attributes are the restaurant’s main draw.  No, going to The Nest for the food or drinks or even the music is entirely beside the point. The Nest’s main attraction has to be its lively, dressed-to-the-nines, up-all-night-on-the-dance-floor patrons, who are almost all between the ages of 65 and 100.  Yes, you read that right!  You’d be hard pressed to find any Nest regulars who don’t fall under the senior citizen category.  You’d also be hard pressed to find any of them sitting down!  On no, the Nest’s patrons don’t let a little thing like age stop them from dancing all night long!  And, let me tell you, I can only hope that I look and feel as good as they do when I am their age.  But who am I kidding, I don’t even look or feel that good now!  My fiancé and I always feel a bit cadish when asking for our check – usually yawning while doing so – at around 10 p.m. – 11 at the latest – while all of the club’s more senior regulars are still on the dance floor and showing absolutely no signs of stopping!  It’s truly unbelievable!  And so are the outfits, which are usually quite risqué.  And thanks to A LOT of medical enhancement, the women look far better than I would in such clothing.  LOL  It’s an absolute hoot to see and something that everyone visiting Palm Springs should experience at least once!

IMG_4686

IMG_4684

Ironically, I thought my fiancé and I would be a big hit at The Nest come Halloween thanks to our dance-themed costumes.  I could not have been more wrong about that one, however!  No, thanks to the many aged 75 and older women who were dressed in extremely sexy Halloween costumes, no one even gave my fiancé and I a second glance!  LOL LOL LOL  Our costumes were far too tame for The Nest, I guess.  I’ve actually never seen anything quite like The Nest on Halloween.  It was like a Leg Avenue Catalog had come to life, right before my very eyes.  In attendance were a sexy Batgirl, a sexy Catwoman, a sexy cop, and even a cougar!  🙂  But the costume that really caught my eye?  A Playboy Bunny, complete with a bowtie, fishnet stockings, and . . . a thong leotard.  Yes, you read that right!  LOL  I honestly didn’t think such a thing was possible, but The Nest is even more of a sight to see on Halloween than on any other night!

[ad]

IMG_4683

Besides cougars, celebrities have also been frequenting The Nest since it first opened over forty years ago, and they’ve got the autographed pictures on the walls to prove it.  🙂  In fact, crooner Frank Sinatra and some of his famous friends were regulars during the bar’s early days.  Today a bevy of different celebs and sports stars (mostly professional golf and tennis players) can be spotted dancing or singing along with the club’s live “piano” – it’s actually an electronic keyboard – on a nightly basis.  Country star Toby Keith recently spent a few nights at The Nest and even obliged some fans by stepping up to the mic to sing a few songs.  🙂  So cool!  Even without the celeb connection, though, I’d still recommend stalking the place, as it is just so darn entertaining!  It’s DEFINITELY a Palm-Springs-Must-See!   If you arrive after 9 p.m., be prepared to wait, though, as you’ll be hard pressed to find a seat, or even standing room, for that matter!

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Stalk It: The Nest is located at 75-188 Highway 111 in Indian Wells, just outside of Palm Springs. You can visit their website here.  The live music starts at 7 p.m. nightly.  And if you would like to make your own Dirty Dancing dress, the pattern my mom used is Vogue’s Vintage Pattern #2902.

img_2326-800

As I have mentioned several times before, Dirty Dancing is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time.   The coming of age flick had such a profound effect on me, in fact, that I can still remember exactly where I was when I saw it for the first time.  That was the summer of 1988 :), I was eleven years old and was on a plane by myself flying to visit some family friends.  Dirty Dancing had been released in movie theatres the previous summer and, to my chagrin, my mom had banned me from seeing it, saying I was far too young.   So, imagine my excitement, when I got on the airplane and opened up my in-flight magazine to see that the movie being shown was none other than Dirty Dancing!  Ha, ha, my mother had been outsmarted yet again!!!  🙂  I can still remember sitting there on that airplane, over 21 years ago, being absolutely mesmerized by the movie and the dancing.  Since that time, I’ve probably watched Dirty Dancing over one hundred times.  I’m pretty sure I could easily recite the entire movie, word for word, from start to finish, from memory.  So, a few weeks ago, when I saw a flyer on a bulletin board at my acting school advertising the new Dirty Dancing stage show, I just about had a heart attack!  HOW HAD I NOT KNOWN ABOUT THIS????  LOL  I immediately drove home and purchased tickets to the show for the night of June 2nd, which honestly could not have come soon enough!  Finally, last Tuesday night, my fiance and I got to see Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage!  And let me tell you, I could not have been more excited!!!

img_2347-800

The show was being held at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, an absolutely beautiful Art Deco venue and oft-used filming location which I will have to devote an entire blog post to in the near future.  🙂  When we arrived at the Pantages, you could literally feel the excitement in the air!  In the lobby girls were singing “Hungry Eyes”, fans waiting in line for the bathroom were comparing their favorite scenes from the movie, and everywhere I turned I kept hearing people say “I am SO excited to see this show!”  I can’t tell you how much fun it was to be in a theatre full of people who loved the movie as much as I did and who had so much excitement to see a live performance of it over twenty-two years after its original release!  It was incredible!!

dd-finale_josefbrown

Before seeing the show, I honestly had no idea what to expect.   I was actually a little worried that some aspects of the movie might be changed or modernized for the stage production, but I really needn’t have fretted.  Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage is exactly what its title professes it to be – a real life stage show of the movie.  It is pretty much an EXACT, word for word, replication of the movie performed on-stage right before your very eyes!  Every single aspect of the movie was re-created for the stage show – right down to Baby’s many costumes!!!!  It made me want to run right out and buy some white Keds and denim cut-off shorts!  🙂

[flv:https://www.iamnotastalker.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/dd_30nowthru_sptddt01ma.flv https://www.iamnotastalker.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/dd_30nowthru_sptddt01ma.jpg 480 368]

Quite possibly, the most incredible part of the production – besides the dancing, of course! – was the use of the stage.  I was absolutely AMAZED that they were able to re-create the scenery from the movie in the way that they did for a live stage production.  In the show, scenes take place in Kellerman’s Lodge, outside during the big rain storm, driving in Johnny’s Chevrolet, and on the fallen log in the forest where Baby and Johnny dance.    Even the “practicing the lift in the water” scene was included in the show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I don’t want to give too much away here, but to see Johnny and Baby onstage in the water practicing the lift was incredible!!!!!  Through the unique set design – which includes hydraulic lifting panels and a huge LCD projection screen – it was as if the movie came to life right before my very eyes.  The Dirty Dancing set is actually so big that – for the first time in history – the Pantages had to remove the first three rows of seats in the audience to accommodate it AND the orchestra had to be moved from the pitt area to a room underneath the stage!!!!  It truly is incredible to see!!!!!  I was on a huge high throughout the entire performance and once again became that eleven year old girl on the airplane.  The show is A-MA-ZING andI can’t recommend going to watch it enough!   If you were AT ALL a fan of the movie, you will LOVE this show!!!  You can watch a preview of Dirty Dancing  by clicking in the box above.

img_2360-800

And, just when I thought my night couldn’t possibly get any better, I also go to go BACKSTAGE!  Yes, you read that right!  I GOT TO GO BACKSTAGE at Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage !!!   In a very lucky twist of fate, while planning my surprise engagement party, my mom just happened to meet the mother of one of Dirty Dancing’s ensemble cast members, Jamie Bayard.   So, I just had to ask to be put in contact with him in the hopes that he could possibly take me on a backstage tour after the show.  And, sure enough, he did!!!  Besides starring as a dancer in Dirty Dancing, Jamie is a United States and World West Coast Swing Champion, a Latin/Ballroom Champion, a Salsa and Musical Theatre professor at Loyola Marymount University, and he was a top twenty finalist on Season 4 of So You Think You Can Dance. 🙂  You can visit his website here.  Jamie honestly could NOT have been nicer and spent a good twenty minutes talking with us about the show and showing us around backstage.

On our tour, we got to see Jamie’s dressing room;

and the Dirty Dancing stage!!!!!!!!!!!!   I was absolutely freaking out over the fact that I was STANDING ON THE DIRTY DANCING STAGE!  I mean, who the heck am I to be standing on the DIRTY DANCING STAGE????  LOL

img_2352-800

Of course, I just HAD to have my fiance take a picture of me standing on the stage, but for some incredibly odd reason, beknownst only to him, he decided to zoom in for a close up while taking the photograph!   So, basically, since no part of the Dirty Dancing stage is visible in the above photograph, I have what amounts to what might as well be a picture of me standing in my own living room!  LOL   Men, I swear!!!!

Seeing the show and going backstage was an absolutely incredible experience for me.  A big THANK YOU to Jamie for affording us the opportunity!!! 🙂   And, as I said before, if you are in the area, Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage is a MUST-see!!!!

Farnsworth Park

img_2157-800

My favorite movie of all time has got to be Dirty Dancing. I’ve loved the coming-of-age film ever since I was about 13 years old.  Oh, how I wanted to be Baby!  🙂  Growing up, I made my best guy friend practice doing “the lift” with me everytime we were in a swimming pool.  LOL   And, like Baby, I could never seem to get it right!  🙂  It has long been my location dream to one day travel to Pembroke, Virgina to stalk Mountain Lake Resort, the hotel where most of the filming of the movie took place.   So, imagine my surprise yesterday when I read in my new favorite stalking book  that the final dance sequence from Dirty Dancing  was actually filmed right here in L.A.!  I literally just about died of excitement!!!!  LOL  According to the book, the Kellerman Playhouse, which supposedly existed at the Catskills resort where Baby and her family were vacationing, was, in reality, the Davies Memorial Building located in Farnsworth Park in Altadena.  So, of course, I ran right out to stalk it!

Unfortunately, though, after watching Dirty Dancing  earlier today – accompanied by screenwriter Eleanor Bergstein’s commentary – I am fairly certain that the rumors about the movie being filmed in Altadena are simply that – rumors.  As you can see in the above screen captures, the Davies Memorial Building in no way resembles the Kellerman Playhouse where Johnny and Baby performed their famous final dance.  🙁    The differences between the two buildings include: the Kellerman Playhouse has French doors and stone columns running along its walls, but the Davies Building does not;  the ceiling of the Davies Building is flanked by wooden beams, while the ceiling of the Kellerman Playhouse has an almost curtain-like ceiling;  the Davies Building features a huge rock fireplace centered on one wall, while the Kellerman Playhouse is lacking a fireplace; and the chandeliers in the Davies building are craftsman style, while the Kellerman Playhouse chandeliers are more traditional.  Final proof that the dance scene was not filmed at the Davies Building?  In the commentary, Eleanor states that the scene, which took a whopping five full days to film, took place in North Carolina.  SUCH A BUMMER!!!!

[ad]

img_2160-800

My stalking trip to Farnsworth Park wasn’t a complete bust, though.  While I can pretty much state with absolute certainty that Dirty Dancing’s  final dance scene did not take place there, I am happy to report that many other productions have been filmed on the property. 🙂

img_2163-800

screenshot1035

img_2161-800

screenshot1036

In American Pie 2, Farnsworth Park stood in for Tall Oaks Band Camp.  The amphitheatre area was featured in the scene where Jim played the trombone before a packed audience . . .

screenshot1037

. . . and the Davies Memorial Building was used as the camp lodge where Jim and Michelle had a late night chat.  You can see the building’s huge stone fireplace behind Jim and Michelle in the above screen capture.  Farnsworth Park also made an appearance in the movie’s sequel, American Pie Presents Band Camp

img_2177-800

The Davies Memorial building was also used in the Margaret Chow series Two Sisters  and it’s kitchen area was featured in an episode of NCIS, where it was dressed up to look like a morgue.  The picnic area of Farnsworth Park has been featured in CSI: Las Vegas, numerous episodes of Ghostwhisperer, and a commercial for Apple Computers.

img_2179-800

And even though Dirty Dancing  wasn’t filmed there, I still highly recommend stalking Farnsworth Park.  It is a really pretty place to walk around, lounge in the shade, or have a picnic.  The staff there is also EXTREMELY friendly.  I was even given a mini-tour of the property by one of the staff members, who told me all about what filming had taken place there.  🙂  Love it!!

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  🙂

Stalk It: Farnsworth Park is located at 568 East Mount Curve Avenue, at the corner of Mount Curve and Lake Avenues, in Altadena.  Park hours are from 9 a.m. to sunset.  Parking is free.  You can visit the park’s official website here.
