Pershing Square Restaurant from “Friends with Benefits”

Pershing Square from Friends with Benefits-2834

Though most of my stalking adventures consist of copious amounts of time spent tracking down locations from movies and television shows and then heading out to see those sites in person, it does happen on occasion that a locale I have previously visited pops up unexpectedly in a production.  When this occurs, it thrills me to no end.  Such was the case with Pershing Square, a brasserie situated just outside of Grand Central Station in New York.  My family and I had dined at the glass-fronted eatery numerous times throughout the years during our many trips to the Big Apple.  In fact, we grabbed coffee there upon first meeting our friend Owen, of the When Write Is Wrong blog, in person back in 2009.  So when the restaurant was featured in a scene in 2011’s Friends with Benefits, I was floored.  While I had failed to take many photos of the place during our past meals there, I amended that during my recent trip to New York with the Grim Cheaper.

Pershing Square restaurant is situated on 42nd Street underneath the Park Avenue Viaduct, an elevated roadway which was constructed from 1917 to 1919 in order to provide an express thoroughfare for automobiles traveling on Park Avenue.  The Beaux Arts-style span stretches from 40th to 46th Streets and the area beneath where it crosses over 42nd is known as Pershing Square.  The name came about due to a failed city plan to build a public plaza in honor of World War I General John J. Pershing on an adjacent plot of land located at the southwest corner of 42nd and Park.  The project went awry, though, and in 1920 the property was sold to a developer who constructed an office building on the site.  Despite the change in plans, the area continued to be known as Pershing Square.

The space that now houses Pershing Square restaurant, which is tucked into one of the viaduct’s three French-inspired archways, was originally an open air expanse utilized as a barn for trolleys.  In 1939, as part of that year’s World’s Fair, the area was enclosed with a wall of bronze and glass and transformed into a tourist information center, which would remain in place for many years.

By 1989, when the Grand Central Partnership started making plans for an $8-million renovation of the viaduct, the tourist center site was vacant.  As part of the revamp, the GCP set out to demolish the space and turn it into a restaurant.  The project took several years to come to fruition, but Pershing Square finally opened to the public in the fall of 1999.

The eatery, which evokes hints of both London and Paris with its stylized crimson décor, was established by restaurateur Michael “Buzzy” O’Keefe, of The Water Club and The River Café fame.

Pershing Square won The Municipal Art Society of New York’s Preservation Award the same year it opened.

The brasserie, which has the feel of a glamorous train car from yesteryear and also boasts a fabulous bakery/espresso bar, quickly became one of my family’s favorite NYC dining spots.  Though a bit pricey, the food is fabulous and the ambiance charming, and we find ourselves returning there time and time again.

In Friends with Benefits, Pershing Square is where (spoiler alert!) Dylan (Justin Timberlake) takes Jamie (Mila Kunis) for their first official date after professing his love to her via a massive flash mob in Grand Central Station set to Semisonic’s (not Third Eye Blind’s) 1998 hit “Closing Time.”

In reality, though, there is no seating in that area of Pershing Square.

As you can see above and below, that section of the restaurant serves as a sort of waiting area.

During New York’s warmer months, Pershing Square operates an outdoor café situated on its west side.  That café was featured in a battle scene in the 2012 film The Avengers.

The front of Pershing Square was also shown briefly in the scene.

The Daily Grill at LAX from “Red Eye”

I am officially back from vacation today (yesterday’s post was pre-written).  I could not have had a more fabulous time and was heartbroken when my best friend, Robin, and his family returned to their native Switzerland.  During moments like this, I am reminded of the quote, “Don’t be sorry it’s over.  Be glad it happened.”

Before I get to today’s locale, I thought I would share some photos of the amazing house our group rented for the week.  The pad was the perfect little oasis in the middle of Hollywood and we could not have enjoyed our time there more.  I only wish our stay had been longer.

It is a tradition during each of Robin’s visits to grab one final cocktail at the Daily Grill at LAX’s Tom Bradley International Terminal before he and his family board their return flight home.  Knowing that the time to say good-bye is near, we are all typically in tears before our drinks have even arrived, so we have come to refer to the place as “the sad restaurant.”  I blogged about the eatery back in December 2011 to chronicle its appearance in Friends with Benefits, but, at the time, was unaware that it had also been featured in the 2005 thriller Red Eye.  So, prior to boarding our plane to Switzerland last summer, the GC and I headed over to the Daily Grill to both grab a drink and snap some more pictures.  Somehow I completely forgot to write a second post on the place, though.

Flash forward to Robin’s visit this past April.  When we arrived at LAX prior to his return flight, we were shocked to discover that the Daily Grill had been shuttered and completely gutted as part of the Tom Bradley Terminal’s current renovation, which is expected to be completed sometime next year.  I was hoping that a new eatery would have opened in the former Grill space by the time that Robin and his family departed this past Friday evening, but the area is still a construction zone and, from what the nice lady at Swiss International Air Lines told us, there are no plans for a restaurant to be put in that area.  So that only leaves one place in all of LAX located outside of the security checkpoints to grab a drink – Daniel’s Bistro + Bar, and let’s just say that it definitely does not have the same ambiance as the Daily Grill.

In Red Eye, Tom Bradley International Terminal stood in for Miami International Airport, where Lisa Reisert (Rachel McAdams) landed after a rather scary flight from Dallas, Texas, during which she was kidnapped.  Upon escaping her attacker and departing the plane, Rachel walked towards the Daily Grill.

My photograph below was shot from the opposite angle from which the scene was filmed, but you can see that the floor pattern matches in both images.

To hide from her kidnapper and airport security, Rachel then sat down with two strangers at a Daily Grill table.  When the eatery was in existence, it took up the entire northeast portion of Tom Bradley’s mezzanine and was split in two by a concourse that ran through its middle.  In Red Eye, Rachel sat in the portion of the restaurant seen on the right side of my photograph below (again, my picture was taken from the opposite angle from which the scene was shot).

The escalators located adjacent to the Daily Grill also appeared in the scene.

Those escalators were also featured in the 2005 romcom Rumor Has It.

Manny Delgado (Rico Rodriguez) headed up the same escalators to catch his flight to Columbia in the Season 5 episode of Modern Family titled “Suddenly, Last Summer.”

And the area just below the escalators, which serves as Tom Bradley’s ticketing counters, is where the Backstreet Boys danced in their 1999 “I Want It That Way” music video.  You can watch it here.

As I talked about in my December 2011 post, the Daily Grill was featured in Friends with Benefits. In the movie, it masqueraded as the Newark Liberty International Airport restaurant where Dylan (Justin Timberlake) and Mr. Harper (Richard Jenkins) ate a meal in their underwear.

In the scene, the two ate in the Daily Grill’s northeast section, in the area overlooking the international check-in counters.

Stalk It: The Daily Grill, from Red Eye, was formerly located on the Mezzanine Level of the Tom Bradley International Terminal, inside of the Los Angeles International Airport at 380 World Way in Los Angeles.  The entire terminal is currently under construction and there is no longer a restaurant in that area.

While watching Friends With Benefits this past July, I just about fell out of my theatre seat when I realized that one of the flick’s more pivotal scenes had been filmed at the Daily Grill restaurant inside of the Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport – an eatery that I am very familiar with.  As I have mentioned previously on this blog, my best friend, Robin, lives in Switzerland and comes to visit me just about once a year.  He always flies in and out of LAX and every time we take him to the airport for his return flight, we grab one final cocktail together at the Daily Grill.  The eatery long ago came to be known as “the sad restaurant” in my family’s lexicon, as, knowing that the hour to say good-bye is near, we are all invariably in tears by the time the check arrives.  Flash forward to this past November when, as I mentioned three weeks ago in my post about The Grill on Main in La Quinta, Robin’s mom, Doina, who is my mom’s best friend, flew out to America to surprise my mom on her 60th birthday.  At the end of her eight-day visit, we made our regular pilgrimage to the Daily Grill (that is me and Doina pictured above), which I was extremely excited about as it meant that I could finally blog about the place.

The Daily Grill at LAX, which opened its doors in January 1997, is actually the largest full-service airport restaurant in the entire United States (it measures 8,300 square feet!!!) and features a full bar, a private dining room, and what are easily the best chicken strips I have ever eaten in my entire life!  In fact, on this particular visit, we ordered three servings of them (!!!!) as we could just not seem to get enough.  Best of all, unlike other airport eateries where a single slice of take-out pizza can cost upwards of $7, the Daily Grill is very reasonably priced.  (On a random side-note – while doing research for today’s post, I discovered that there are SEVEN Starbucks stores located inside of LAX!  SEVEN!  According to the Expect Delays travel blog, Starbucks outposts can be found inside of Terminals 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8!  Now, that’s my kind of place!  Winking smile)

In Friends With Benefits, the Daily Grill appeared in the scene in which Dylan (aka Justin Timberlake) and his father, Mr. Harper (aka Richard Jenkins), grab a bite to eat – sans pants – shortly after Mr. Harper arrives at what is supposedly Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.  It is actually pretty ironic that the Daily Grill masqueraded as an East Coast location in the flick, as Friends With Benefits poked quite a bit of fun at movies that try to pull one over on their audience by having locales in Los Angeles stand in for those in New York.

In the scene, Dylan and Mr. Harper dine in the northeastern-most section of the restaurant in the area overlooking the ticketing counters.

Our super-nice waitress answered all of my silly little questions about the filming of Friends With Benefits and even informed us that the filmmakers had covered over one of the Daily Grill’s overhead lights during the shoot and had forgotten to uncover it afterwards.  As you can see above, it is still covered over today!  So incredibly cool!

ScreenShot2285 ScreenShot2287

ScreenShot2289 ScreenShot2290

According to the Friends With Benefits production notes, the scene in which Jamie (aka Mila Kunis) hops on a baggage carousel and starts handing out luggage to various travelers was also shot at LAX, although I am unsure of exactly where.

ScreenShot2291 ScreenShot2292

ScreenShot2293 ScreenShot2294

Our waitress also informed us that a scene from the 2005 flick Rumor Has It involving my girl Jen Aniston had been filmed on the escalators located just outside of the Daily Grill, which I could NOT have been more excited about.  Our waitress was working during the time the scene was filmed and said she watched Jen ride up and down those escalators for pretty much an entire day!  How incredibly cool is that?  I would have absolutely DIED!

P1010800 P1010797

The escalators have been remodeled since the time Rumor Has It was filmed and no longer have palm trees planted in between them, but otherwise look much the same as they did onscreen.

And I, of course, just had to pose for a pic in the spot where my girl stood in the movie.  Smile
