Mother Moo Creamery from “Big Little Lies”

IMG_1436

Though Big Little Lies’ second season was an all-around disappointment, the biggest letdown of all was Meryl Streep and Reese Witherspoon’s infamous ice-cream-throwing scene – captured by paparazzi and splayed all over the internet – which never actually made it to the screen.  The cut didn’t go unnoticed.  Calling the lost segment “the biggest lie so far,” the Eater website opined, “The biggest mystery of season two revolves around a food fight that never happened.”  Thanks to some signage visible on neighboring buildings in the paparazzi pics, I tracked down and stalked Mother Moo Creamery, the adorable Sierra Madre ice cream shop where the cone-tossing scene took place, long before the sophomore season premiered.  So the disappointment over its non-airing was particularly stinging for me.  Though Streep assured fans the footage would be included in the Season 2 DVD extras, that did not come to pass.  Oh, BLL producers, why are you holding out on us?  Regardless, I figured Mother Moo was still worthy of a post and, since restaurants are just starting to reopen, decided now was the perfect time to pen it!

Bright, colorful, and cheery, Mother Moo Creamery is the cutest little ice cream shop you ever did see!

Pinwheels in the planter box?  Come on!  So adorable!

IMG_1435

It’s like the ice cream parlor of your dreams!

IMG_1407

And it’s even more charming inside!

IMG_1429

IMG_1434

The ice cream offerings at Mother Moo are plentiful.  The Grim Cheaper and I opted for a scoop of the salty chocolate and it was literally the best cone of my life!

IMG_1418

Besides the divine scoops, Mother Moo also sells gifts, candy, and other sundries.

IMG_1420

It is not at all hard to see how the darling shop wound up onscreen, especially on a series as picturesque as Big Little Lies.

IMG_1428

IMG_1430

While the cone-throwing footage never made it to to the airwaves, Mother Moo Creamery – or at least the exterior of it – did!  In the episode titled “Kill Me,” Madeline Martha Mackenzie (Witherspoon) and her daughter, Abigail Carlson (Kathryn Newton), have a terse interaction with Mary Louise Wright (Streep) outside of the parlor.

We get a better look at the jeweler next door than we do Mother Moo in the segment, though.

Fortunately, we have those paparazzi photos which largely went viral thanks to a fan named Matt who posted one on Twitter with the caption, “I am praying Reese pelts Meryl with that ice cream,” to which Reese responded, “Oh Matt!  No need to pray.  I got her!”

screenshot-000783

Of course, I had to do it!

Shortly before Big Little Lies’ Season 2 premiere, Reese posted an Instagram photo posing with her television daughter at the shop, so I had to emulate that, as well!

Long before Mother Moo Creamery moved in, the storefront that houses it appeared briefly as an electronics shop in the 1982 horror film Halloween III: The Season of the Witch.  It is amazing how little of the space has changed in the almost forty years since the segment was lensed!

IMG_1407

I am fairly certain the site was an electronics store in real life during that time because, thanks to fellow stalker Walter, I learned that in 1986 it also popped up in the Season 2 episode of Highway to Heaven titled “Close Encounters of the Heavenly Kind” as Jack’s Video Repair, where Harvey Milsap (Harold J. Stone) attempted to get a job.

First Church of Christ, Scientist from “Little Fires Everywhere”

first church 2

Though I stalked and blogged about Little Fires Everywhere locations ad nauseam, amazingly there is still one spot I have yet to cover – Pasadena’s First Church of Christ, Scientist, which masked as the Shaker Heights courthouse on the new Hulu series.  I recognized the building as soon as it came onscreen in episode 7 (though, truth be told, I often get it confused with the similar-looking Second Church of Christ, Scientist in West Adams).  Not only did I used to live just a few blocks from the temple and pass by it regularly on my thrice daily walks to Starbucks, but I am very familiar with it thanks to its appearance in Scream 2.  I was sure I had taken pictures of the place for my October 2016 write-up on the horror flick’s Los Angeles locales, but when I went to look, I couldn’t find any in my photo library.  So onto my To-Stalk List it went.  Then, late last week, my friend Kim sent me a text asking about must-see places in Pasadena.  Turns out she was heading to Crown City for a little (socially distant) stalking trek the following day.  Thrilled, I asked if she might pop by First Church of Christ, Scientist to snap some pics for me, which she gladly did.  Thank you, Kim!

[ad]

First Church of Christ, Scientist was designed by Franklin Pierce Burnham beginning in 1909.  The Classical Revival building was one of the architect’s last works and he, sadly, didn’t live to see it completed.  Burnham passed away unexpectedly in December 1909, at which point Marston & Van Pelt (who also gave us Arden Villa from Vacation, the Gilmore mansion from Gilmore Girls, the S.S. Hinds Estate from Beaches,  and the A.L. Garford House from Twins) took over.

IMG_4589_Lively

IMG_4586_Lively(1)

The structure’s most notable feature is its central dome, inspired by the Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, aka the religion’s “mother church.”

IMG_4572_Lively

IMG_4573_Lively

When it was completed, First Church of Christ, Scientist had the distinction of being Pasadena’s largest building.  Though that is no longer the case, it remains one of the city’s prettiest.  As such, it is no shock that it found its way to the screen.

IMG_4571_Lively

The church first pops up as the Shaker Heights courthouse in the seventh episode of Little Fires Everywhere, titled “Picture Perfect,” as the custody battle for Mirabelle McCullough/May Ling Chow (I cannot find the name of the actress who plays her anywhere!) gets underway.

screenshot-000563

The building also appears a couple of times in the Little Fires Everywhere finale, titled “Find a Way.”  It is first shown as in an establishing shot as the McCullough/Chow trial continues.

And then later, after the verdict is announced, the McCulloughs’ lawyer, Bill Richardson (Joshua Jackson), holds a press conference on the front steps.

IMG_4580_Lively

Only the exterior of the building was used on the series.  Interiors were shot elsewhere, though I am unsure of where.

As I mentioned earlier, First Church of Christ, Scientist is also featured in Scream 2.  Though little of it can be seen, it is outside of the building that Ghostface gets into a car crash and kills Hallie McDaniel (Elise Neal) in the 1997 horror flick.  In the caps below, Hallie is standing at the eastern end of the church’s Green Street side, with the camera facing west.

That same year, the building posed as Washington, D.C.’s United States Department of Justice at the top of the Season 1 episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. titled “Nothing Personal.”

Le Petit Paris from “Little Fires Everywhere”

IMG_8787

Reese Witherspoon is deserving of a major ‘thank you’ from me!  Per the actress’ recent productions, I have been introduced to two fabulous downtown Los Angeles restaurants!  The first, The Wolves, popped up twice on her Apple TV+ series The Morning Show.  And now, via Little Fires Everywhere, I’ve discovered Le Petit Paris, a striking French brasserie situated on the ground floor of the El Dorado Lofts building.  I was actually tipped off about the eatery and the filming that took place there last year by a fellow stalker who works in the area.  Though I had never heard of the place, one look at Google images had me transfixed!  I was fairly certain I had never come across a more gorgeous space in my life.  So my mom and I headed out there for happy hour mid-January while in town for one of my dad’s pre-surgical doctor appointments.  We returned the following week for dinner after a long day at the hospital just prior to my dad’s surgery.  Neither time did it disappoint.

[ad]

The El Dorado Lofts building was originally constructed as the Hotel Stowell in 1913.  The 12-story, 264-room lodging, commissioned by financier Nathan Wilson Stowell, was designed in the Art Nouveau and Gothic Revival styles by architects Frederick Noonan and William Richards.  You can see what the exterior looked like in its early days here.

IMG_8799

Upscale and ornate, the hotel catered to wealthy businessmen called to the area for work, though some celebrities also checked in.  Charlie Chaplin even lived there for a time, though, surprisingly, per the Paradise Leased blog, he later described it as “a middle-rate place but new and comfortable.”  It sure looks like it was pretty fancy to me!  Constructed with all locally-sourced materials, the sweeping two-level lobby boasted a grand staircase, gold leaf columns, and a plethora of Batchelder tilework.

IMG_8750

Patronage declined during the Great Depression resulting in the building being sold in 1938.  It eventually became a low-budget residential hotel known as the El Dorado.  The place continued to deteriorate in the years that followed and by the 1980s, it sat abandoned and remained so for the next two decades.  The Gilmore and Associates development team finally stepped in, purchasing the building in 2000 and transforming the former hotel rooms into luxury condos, a project that was completed in 2010.  (You can check out images of two of the revamped units here and here.)  The once-grand lobby was made available as a possible restaurant space and it was then that David and Fanny Rolland set their sights on it.  (You can see what it looked like at the time here.)

IMG_8796

The husband and wife duo, who hail from France and previously founded two eateries in Cannes, began transforming the 8,000-square-foot space into a magical Parisian-inspired oasis.

IMG_8747

Le Petit Paris opened its doors in September 2015.

IMG_8786

IMG_8755

To say that the 300-seat restaurant is striking would be a gross understatement.

  IMG_8759

IMG_8761

I mean, come on!

IMG_8766

With massive skylights, sparkling crystal chandeliers, two bars, a large patio, a fireplace, a towering split staircase, subtle pink and red accents, and a spectacular mosaic floor, Le Petit Paris is easily one of L.A.’s most gorgeous spots!

IMG_8768

IMG_8757

I especially loved the painting of Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby hung near the bar.

IMG_8774

Had to do it!

IMG_8784

The food at Le Petit Paris is as delicious as the place is beautiful!  Both the executive chef and the executive pastry chef hail from France and all of the menu items are homemade on the premises.  During our initial happy hour visit, I had a glass of champagne (natch!) and my mom ordered the carpaccio, which she was thoroughly obsessed with.  She talked about it for days afterward!  So on our second visit, in which we grabbed dinner in the dining room, she was seriously bummed to discover that the carpaccio was only available on the happy hour menu.  (She did love the French onion soup she wound up ordering, though.)  The following morning, when we arrived at the hospital, my dad asked how our dinner was.  When my mom expressed her extreme dismay at not being able to order her beloved carpaccio, my dad looked down at his hospital gown and many IVS, turned to her and said, “Yeah, I feel so sorry for you.”  We laughed about that one for days afterward.  Smile

IMG_8773

In Little Fires Everywhere, Elena Richardson (Reese Witherspoon) meets up with her former boyfriend, Jamie Caplan (Luke Bracey), at Le Petit Paris, which is said to be in New York, in the episode titled “Duo.”

screenshot-000248

IMG_8762

During our first visit, I asked the bartender about the filming of Little Fires Everywhere and he informed us that while he did not work at the restaurant at the time, ironically he was an extra in the scene that shot on the premises!  When he applied for a job at Le Petit Paris months later, he did not realize it was the same place.  It was only when he showed up for his interview that he made the connection.

screenshot-000249

IMG_8758

Sadly, Le Petit Paris is currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  When the world gets back to normal (oh, what a fabulous day that will be!), I am very much looking forward to sipping a glass of bubbly in one of the restaurant’s plush chairs, soaking up the magical ambiance of the place.

Mia’s House from “Little Fires Everywhere”

IMG_9693

Reese Witherspoon certainly is the darling of streaming TV!  First Big Little Lies (that’s HBO, but still), then The Morning Show, then Truth Be Told (which she executive-produced) and now Little Fires Everywhere.  The latter, which is currently airing on Hulu, is an adaptation of Celest Ng’s 2017 book of the same name.  Centering around two very different families living in the upscale town of Shaker Heights, Ohio (where Ng grew up), the series had me hooked from episode 1.  I only grew more obsessed when I learned that filming took place in L.A.!  The opulent home where Elena Richardson (Witherspoon) lives is a locale I was familiar with and recognized on sight – it’s the Tate mansion from Soap at 511 South Muirfield Road in Hancock Park.  But the charming duplex Elena rents to Mia Warren (Kerry Washington) in episode 1, “Spark,” said to be on Windsor Avenue, is a spot I had never seen before.  So I promptly began hunting it down.

[ad]

An address number of 2008 was clearly visible next to the front door of the adorable property in several scenes.  And thanks to an Architectural Digest article I came across, I knew that Mia’s rental was somewhere in Pasadena.  I had an inkling it was actually in South Pasadena, which is often confused with Pasadena proper, so I began my hunt there.  The first result kicked back when I searched “2008,” “Street” and “South Pasadena” was a listing for a home at 2008 Fremont Street, which Google Street View showed me was not the right spot.  So I started popping the little yellow man over to the adjacent 2800 blocks and found Mia’s pad just 3 blocks over at 2008 La France Avenue.  Being that I had no plans to head to L.A. at any point (stay home, people!), I enlisted my friend Anne, of The Drewseum, who lives in the area, to stalk the place (at an appropriate social distance, of course) on my behalf, which she did the very next day!  Thank you, Anne!

screenshot-000184-1

IMG_9689

In real life, Mia’s rental is a single-family home, not a duplex as depicted on Little Fires Everywhere.  The reason that producers chose a house to portray the multi-family dwelling was actually derived straight from the script.  As Elena explains to Mia upon first showing her the property, “Every house on Windsor has two families in it, even though it appears to only have one.  It was actually designed that way to avoid any stigma of renting instead of owning.”  On Little Fires Everywhere, Mia and her daughter, Pearl (Lexi Underwood), are said to live in the top unit.

screenshot-000170

IMG_9696

Only the exterior of the house was used in the production.

screenshot-000186

IMG_9695

The inside of Mia’s rental was a set.  As production designer Jessica Kender told Architectural Digest, “Mia is more transient, and her house has a warm feel as they travel only with their clothes and her art supplies.  The character found furnishings at the thrift shop and turned the sunroom into her art studio.  She found natural objects like branches [and] feathers, and hung a fishnet from floor to ceiling and her artwork on the painted accent walls.”  Kerry Washington also apparently had a hand in the design of Mia’s place.  Kender furthers, “Kerry did not want a lot of furniture in the bedroom as it would feel too permanent.  Her character’s space was a bed on the floor, a side table, and artwork above the bed.  She didn’t even want incidental chairs to show that [her character] was staying.”

screenshot-000171

screenshot-000183

Originally built in 1923, the 2-story traditional-style home boasts 3 bedrooms, 1 bath, 2,160 square feet, a fireplace, and a 0.17-acre lot.

The CalEdison from “The Morning Show”

CalEdison from The Morning Show (41 of 58)

L.A. never ceases to amaze!  Case in point – the CalEdison.  Built in 1931, the Art Deco masterpiece is not only a sight to behold, but its grand lobby is open to the public!  Somehow though, I never knew about the place until last week when I was researching locations from The Morning Show.

[ad]

During my viewing of the new Apple TV+ series’ premiere episode, “In the Dark Night of the Soul It’s Always 3:30 in the Morning,” I became a bit mesmerized with what was said to be the Archer Gray Hotel in New York.  With towering marble columns, ornate tile flooring, and intricate wrought-iron windows, the space was striking to say the least.  Shocked I had never come across it in all my years of stalking, I immediately set out to track it down.  Because The Morning Show is largely filmed in L.A., with only a few exteriors shot in NYC, I knew the Archer Gray had to be somewhere in SoCal.  Its seemingly historic architecture led me to look first in the downtown area.  But Google searches for “historic building,” “grand lobby,” and “marble columns” did not bring up images that even remotely resembled the place.

Screenshot-012625

CalEdison from The Morning Show (1 of 1)

It was not until episode 5, “No One’s Going to Harm You, Not While I’m Around,” aired that I was able to pinpoint it.  In a scene at the close of the episode, Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) attempts to secure the room number of her boss Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup) from an uncooperative Archer Gray front desk clerk, during which a massive mural is visible behind her, as well as what appeared to be a coffee bar of some sort.  Adding those elements to my search terms led me straight to The CalEdison, a historic office building in the heart of downtown.  I was elated to discover upon researching the place further that it is open to the public!  My parents just happened to be heading into L.A. a few days after my discovery and had booked a room at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, located right across the street from The CalEdison.  So I, of course, tagged along and ran right over to stalk the building immediately upon check-in.

The 14-story structure originally served as the headquarters of Southern California Edison and was known, appropriately, as the Southern California Edison Building.

Designed by the Allison & Allison architecture firm (who also gave us the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles and UCLA’s Kerckhoff Hall), the property’s gorgeous exterior features a limestone and terracotta façade, bas-reliefs sculpted by artist Merrell Gage, and a towering two-story entry portico.

It is the interior that is the real stunner, though!

The expansive lobby boasts over 17 varieties of marble, 30-foot coffered ceilings, a mural painted by Hugo Ballin, and stunning friezes above each elevator.

Even the trash cans are elegant!  And those building directories!

CalEdison from The Morning Show (30 of 58)

The CalEdison is more than just a pretty face, though.  As the first seismically-retrofitted building in L.A., as well as the first to be electrically heated and cooled, it was incredibly technologically advanced.

CalEdison from The Morning Show (37 of 58)

Boasting 250,000 square feet of office space, The CalEdison cost a whopping $2.5 million to construct.

CalEdison from The Morning Show (24 of 58)

When SoCal Edison sold the place in 1972 in order to relocate to Rosemead, it was renamed One Bunker Hill.  Its stellar architecture was mutilated in the decade that followed – its ceilings dropped, walls removed, and large fourth-floor patios enclosed with glass casings.  I actually really like the look of the latter, which have been described as “greenhouse-like structures.”  You can see what they looked like here.  Thankfully, the lobby was left untouched during the renovations.

CalEdison from The Morning Show (46 of 58)

In October 2015, the grand building was bought by Hermes Investment Management of London, Limestone Investments and Rising Realty Partners for $92 million.  The group renamed it The CalEdison and set about bringing the site back to its original glory, as well as renovating the many upstairs office spaces into creative work sites.  The patio casings were also removed as part of the project.  Though I wish those casings had been left intact, the rest of the work performed can only be described as perfection.

CalEdison from The Morning Show (39 of 58)

GreekOak Real Estate bought out both Hermes and Limestone earlier this year for $140 million, though Rising Realty continues to hold on to its share of the property.

While walking around the vast lobby, I couldn’t help but think how fabulous is it that this masterpiece exists and that it is open to the public for Angelinos and tourists alike to enjoy.

On The Morning Show, the Archer Gray Hotel is where network exec Cory checks in upon arriving in New York to deal with the fallout from the firing of Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell).  Bradley also moves there in episode 5 after being relocated from The Standard, where she was initially put up.  Only the lobby of the building is featured on the series.  (My photo below is a little off on the angling, but shows the same area of The CalEdison as is pictured in the screen capture.)

The Starbucks from “The Morning Show”

The Starbucks from The Morning Show (20 of 35)

I love a good Starbucks location!  I mean, what’s better than stalking and being able to pick up a great cup of coffee at the same time?  So I was thrilled to recognize an outpost of the java giant while watching the fifth episode of The Morning Show, titled “No One’s Gonna Harm You, Not While I’m Around,” recently.  As it turns out, the café is a place I’ve visited countless times over the years and even blogged about once back in 2013.  Situated on the corner of West 6th Street and Grand Avenue in downtown L.A., the coffee shop is just steps from the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, where the Grim Cheaper and I regularly used to check in when seeking a staycation while living in Los Angeles.  As fate would have it, my parents booked a room at the property just last week, so I, of course, tagged along in order to do a little Starbucks re-stalk.

[ad]

The Starbucks at 6th and Grand has been a staple of the neighborhood for more than a decade.

The Starbucks from The Morning Show (31 of 35)

Before that, the space, situated in the southwest corner of the ground floor of the picturesque PacMutual building, housed a Grand Central Coffee outpost and then a Tully’s Coffee.

The Starbucks from The Morning Show (33 of 35)

The Starbucks from The Morning Show (32 of 35)

The Starbucks looks quite a bit different today than when I originally stalked it six years ago thanks to an extensive remodel that took place in late 2017 during which the interior was gutted, the front doors moved from the store’s south to west side, and the café expanded into the unit next door which formerly housed a deli.

The Starbucks from The Morning Show (25 of 35)

The result is a massive, modern space with plenty of seating, a huge front counter, and wraparound windows.

I love the muted green color scheme and concrete design elements which give it a bit of a different feel than a typical Starbucks.

It is at the coffee shop that Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) runs into her co-workers Hannah Shoenfeld (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and Claire Conway (Bel Powley), who invite her out to celebrate Claire’s birthday, in “No One’s Gonna Harm You, Not While I’m Around.”

Screenshot-012596

The Starbucks from The Morning Show (7 of 35)

By only showing one small corner of the café in the scene and none of the familiar Starbucks signage, it seems that producers went out of their way to make the place appear to be a random coffee house and not an outpost of the retail giant.  Had it not been for the green umbrellas visible outside the window, as well as the view of the Edwards & Wildey Building (now known as Milano Lofts) across the street, I might not have recognized the location.  It’s a good thing I know my Starbucks!

The 6th and Grand outpost is actually a frequent film star.

It appeared very briefly in the background of the 1999 drama Fight Club in the scene in which The Narrator (Edward Norton) and Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) blew up an electronics store.

Though the Tully’s signage was left intact on the front doors, the space was utilized to portray the fictional “Phil’s Bar” in the 2004 romcom Little Black Book.  In another odd move, the imagery of the bar’s exterior was also flipped in the scene, as I detailed in my 2013 post.

Bradley’s Mom’s House from “The Morning Show”

Bradley's Mom's House from The Morning Show (10 of 16)

The Morning Show really threw me for a loop, location-wise (as I mentioned in this recent post).  Set in NYC, I got through the entire first episode of the new Apple TV+ series thinking it was shot in the Big Apple, as well.  I did have a couple moments of hesitation in that belief while watching, one when an overhead shot of the dining room of downtown L.A.’s famous Cicada restaurant was shown and the other when Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) pulled up to the home belonging to her mother, Sandy (Brett Butler).  The foliage, setback, and architecture of the latter had a definite San Gabriel Valley feel to it.  In fact, it looked ripped right off a leafy Pasadena-area street!  I even turned to the Grim Cheaper and said, “Huh, they must have Craftsman-style houses like that in the suburbs of NYC, too!”  D’oh!  As soon as I realized while watching episode 2 that The Morning Show was actually lensed in L.A., my first order of business was to find Sandy’s house.  Thankfully, it turned out to be a fairly easy endeavor despite some trickery by the production team.

[ad]

In the series’ premiere episode, titled “In the Dark Night of the Soul It’s Always 3:30 in the Morning,” Bradley heads to her mother’s supposed West Virginia home to confront her brother about his early release from rehab.  A fake address number of 1624 was added to the residence’s mailbox for the scene and, while it thwarted my identification attempts for a bit, ultimately I prevailed.  You have to get up pretty early in the morning to fool me!  Winking smile

Bradley's Mom's House from The Morning Show (1 of 1)

Due to the home’s seeming ruralness, I figured it was most likely located just north of Pasadena in the unincorporated community of Altadena and began my search there.  Thanks to its unique orientation – it sits perpendicular to the road with its side facing the street, which is apparent when Bradley parks in the scene – I pinpointed it rather quickly via aerial views as 2874 Santa Anita Avenue, about a mile northwest of the Walsh house from Beverly Hills, 90210.

In real life, the handsome 2-story Craftsman, built in 1915, boasts 5 bedrooms, 3 baths, 1,673 square feet, and a detached garage.

Not to mention one grand front porch!

It is on the front porch that Hannah Shoenfeld (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) convinces Bradley to go to New York to be interviewed by Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) in the episode.

Though the front of the property is visible from the street, not much else of it is thanks to the massive amount of foliage surrounding it.

I am 99.9% certain that the inside of the pad also appeared in “In the Dark Night of the Soul It’s Always 3:30 in the Morning,” but, unfortunately, I could not find any interior photos with which to verify that.

Screenshot-012573

It is also from the house that Hal (Joe Tippett) calls Bradley to inquire about her new morning show gig in episode 3, titled “Chaos is the New Cocaine.”

And it is from there that Sandy is interviewed during Bradley’s hosting debut in episode 4 “That Woman.”

The residence is actually no stranger to the small screen.

The Filming Locations of “Big Little Lies” Season 2 – “Kill Me”

BLLSeason2-KillMe

The fifth episode of Big Little Lies’ second season may have lacked pizzazz (especially since the much-anticipated ice-cream-throwing scene was cut!), but it sure boasted a lot of locations.  Read on to discover which spots the Monterey 5 frequented in “Kill Me.”  (Note – as was the case with my posts about the locales from “What Have They Done?,” ”Tell-Tale Hearts,” “The End of the World” and “She Knows,” because I have already extensively detailed BLL’s inaugural season, I will not be covering flashbacks.  And places that appear in multiple episodes will be noted as such, so some crossover should be expected.)

[ad]

1. Jane’s Apartment (Ocean Harbor, 125 Surf Way, Monterey) – “Kill Me” opens at the new seaside apartment Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley) shares with her son, Ziggy (Iain Armitage), located at Monterey’s Ocean Harbor.  Though the inside of Jane’s place is, I believe, just a set . . .

Screenshot-011801

. . . the actual interior of a unit is used as the home of Mary Louise Wright (Meryl Streep), who lives in the same complex.

Screenshot-011808

“Kill Me” also offers us a rare glimpse of the exterior of Ocean Harbor towards the end of the episode as Mary Louise sits alone on nearby Del Monte Beach.

Screenshot-011807

2. Celeste’s House (40 Yankee Point Drive, Carmel) – A gorgeous pad in Carmel Highlands stands in for the residence of Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman) and her children, Max (Nicholas Crovetti) and Josh (Cameron Crovetti), on the show.  Used extensively throughout Seasons 1 and 2, the home, more specifically its dining room, only appears briefly in “Kill Me.”  Celeste’s bedroom and the twins’ room, which are also shown in the episode, were just studio-built sets.

Screenshot-011787

3. Nathan and Ed’s Argument (Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail, near 459 Ocean View Boulevard, Pacific Grove) – Nathan Carlson (James Tupper) calls Ed Mackenzie (Adam Scott) a “nut-f*ck” – the planet is inhabited by them! – on Monterey Bay’s gorgeous Coastal Recreation Trail, which runs 18 miles from Castroville to Pacific Grove.  In the scene, the two men argue near the Lovers Point Mural, about 0.2 miles east of Lovers Point Beach.

Screenshot-011774

4. Monterey Superior Court (Superior Court of California, Marina Division, 3180 Del Monte Boulevard, Marina) – Celeste and Mary Louise attend the first part of their custody hearing at an actual Central Coast courthouse located in Marina, a small town just north of Monterey.  Little of the unique building is shown in the scene, though we catch better views of it in the Season 2 finale, “I Want to Know.”

Screenshot-011775

I believe the actual interior of the courthouse also made an appearance in the episode.

Screenshot-011776

5. Cypress Community Hospital (Lanterman Developmental Center, 3530 Pomona Boulevard, Pomona) – Bonnie Carlson (Zoë Kravitz) sits vigil at her mother Elizabeth Howard’s (Crystal Fox) bedside at what is supposed to be Monterey’s local Cypress Community Hospital.  Filming actually took place at an abandoned former health facility in Pomona known as Lanterman Developmental Center.  The same spot is also where Amabella Klein (Ivy George) was taken after her anxiety attack in “The End of the World” and where Elizabeth was admitted following her stroke in “She Knows.”  (Big THANK YOU to my friend Owen for IDing this location!  Smile)

Screenshot-011811

6. Ziggy and the Twins’ Fist Fight (Carmel River Elementary School, 2770 15th Avenue, Carmel) Though Ziggy, Max and Josh are suspended for pummeling a bully on the Otter Bay Elementary playground, Kenter Canyon, which typically portrays the school of the Monterey 5’s children on the series, was not used in the scene.  Filming instead took place at Carmel River Elementary, with the bungalows of the neighboring Mission Ranch Hotel clearly visible in the background.

Screenshot-011693

7. Otter Bay Elementary (Kenter Canyon Elementary School, 645 North Kenter Avenue, Brentwood) – Kenter Canyon does make an appearance in “Kill Me,” though.  It in the school’s principal’s office that Celeste and Jane are informed of their children’s three-day suspension and outside of the school that Jane asks Ziggy what caused the fight.

Screenshot-011782

8. Madeline and Ed’s Marriage Retreat (Seven Coves, 157 Spindrift Road, Carmel) – A massive compound in Carmel which also cameoed in the 1992 thriller Basic Instinct stood in for the “healing institute” where Ed and his wife, Madeline Martha Mackenzie (Reese Witherspoon), try to repair their marriage.  The sprawling property, known as Seven Coves in real life, boasts 5 separate homes, more than 4 acres of land, 1,000 feet of coastline, 17,000 square feet of living space, 12 bedrooms, and 17 bathrooms.  If you have an extra $52 million lying around, the whole thing can be yours, as it is currently on the market.

Screenshot-011783

It is in the property’s quaint, one-bedroom Writer’s Cottage that Ed and Madeline attend the retreat’s infamous hugging seminar in “Kill Me.”

Screenshot-011784

9. Renata and Gordon’s House (27326 Winding Way, Malibu) – In the hopes of getting her to drop the custody battle against Celeste, Renata Klein (Laura Dern) invites Mary Louise for tea at her massive modern mansion, now virtually empty due to her bankruptcy – which, of course, does not go unnoticed by Mary Louise.  The pad, featured in both Seasons 1 and 2, can be found on a private road in the hills of Malibu above Escondido Beach.  Both the interior and exterior are utilized extensively on the series.

Screenshot-011786

10. Madeline and Ed’s House (30760 Broad Beach Road, Malibu) – Chloe Mackenzie (Darby Camp) offers her father, Ed, some solace in the form of a hug in the kitchen of their idyllic Cape Cod-style home in “Kill Me.”  Like Renata’s place, the Mackenzie residence is located in Malibu.  The stunning property is a vacation rental in real life, which means you, too, can live like the Monterey 5 – well, temporarily, at least.  You can check out a post I wrote about the dwelling here.

Screenshot-011789

11. Liberation Yoga (124 South La Brea Avenue, Hancock Park)  – Bonnie hosts a “singing for sleep apnea” class and is confronted by her father, Martin Howard (Martin Donovan), at a real yoga studio in Hancock Park.  Or at least it was.  Sadly, Liberation Yoga, formerly located on La Brea Avenue, has since moved and the storefront that once housed it sits vacant, so you can no longer get your namaste on there.  The site also popped up a couple of times in Season 1 and was where Elizabeth surprised Bonnie in Season 2’s “Tell-Tale Hearts.”

Screenshot-011790

12. Ira Farber’s Office (Scheper Kim & Harris LLP, The CalEdison DTLA, 601 West 5th Street, 12th Floor, downtown Los Angeles)  – Mary Louise’s lawyer, Ira Farber (Denis O’Hare), unsuccessfully tries to broker a joint custody deal between his client and Celeste at Scheper Kim & Harris, located on the 12th floor of The CalEdison in downtown L.A.  The firm’s offices also showed up in episode 4, “She Knows.”

Screenshot-011791

The building’s 12th floor elevator bay was utilized in “Kill Me,” as well.

Screenshot-011813

13. The Monterey 5’s Parking Lot Meet-Up (White Point Park, 1801 West Paseo Del Mar, San Pedro) Celeste calls for a late-night secret meeting in the parking lot of San Pedro’s White Point Park (quite a long way from Monterey!) to discuss the latest in Perry’s (Alexander Skarsgård) case and to inform the group that she might be required to take the stand in her custody hearing, which would put them all in jeopardy.  The same lot also makes an appearance in “The Bad Mother.”

Screenshot-011795

14. Bonnie and Nathan’s House (636 Crater Camp Drive, Calabasas) – Nathan tries to make a grand gesture to show his love for Bonnie by surprising her with a treadmill and running book at their bohemian-style residence, actually located in Calabasas.  It is in the living room of the bucolic home, used in both Seasons 1 and 2, that Bonnie has a heart-to-heart with her dad about her childhood abuse in the episode.

Screenshot-011797

15. Madeline and Mary Louise’s Ice Cream Run-In (Kersting Court, Sierra Madre) – In what proved to be the most disappointing scene of the season, Madeline and her daughter Abigail Carlson (Kathryn Newton) run into Mary Louise on a downtown Sierra Madre street after getting ice cream.  Though the cone-tossing element of the segment never made it to the screen, the trio is shown having a terse conversation in front of Savor the Flavor gift store at 11 Kersting Court.

Screenshot-011800

16. Corey’s Kayaking Beach (Whaler’s Cove, Point Lobos, Carmel) – Instead of keeping Max, Josh and Ziggy home during their suspension, Celeste and Jane decide to take them kayaking with Corey Brockfield (Douglas Smith) at Monterey’s famed Whaler’s Cove at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve.  The pristine oasis, a popular kayaking destination in real life, is part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

Screenshot-011805

Prior to heading out on the water, Corey engages in some horseplay with the boys in the Cove’s parking lot area, which also made appearances in “The End of the World.”

Screenshot-011802

17. Tori Hits on Ed (City Tavern, 9739 Culver Boulevard, Culver City) – Tori Bachman (Sarah Sokolovic) rather awkwardly hits on Ed (though things are about to get a lot more awkward in the episodes to come!), at City Tavern, the very same bar where Celeste and Jane had cocktails in “She Knows.”

Screenshot-011806

18. Carmel by the Sea Police Department (Junipero Avenue & 4th Avenue, Carmel) – Carmel by the Sea PD plays itself in several episodes of Big Little Lies’ second season.  In “Kill Me,” Bonnie heads there on a late-night walk and makes the shocking discovery that Corey might be working with the police.

Don’t forget to tune in Friday for my post about episode 6, “The Bad Mother.”

The Filming Locations of “Big Little Lies” Season 2 – “Tell-Tale Hearts”

BLLSeason2-TellTaleHearts

“Tell-Tale Hearts,” the second episode of Big Little Lies’ second season, boasts some of the series’ most quotable, meme-worthy moments, largely thanks to the inimitable Renata Klein (Laura Dern) – “Will somebody give a woman a moment??”  It also features some of the show’s most memorable locales [the forest where Bonnie Carlson (Zoë Kravitz) hikes with her mom, amirite?], the majority of which are detailed below.  (I am still missing a few, which I will add in as they are found.)  As was the case with Monday’s post about sites from episode 1, “What Have They Done?”, since I have already chronicled filming of BLL’s inaugural season extensively, I will not be covering flashbacks.  And places that appear in multiple episodes will be mentioned as such, so expect some crossover.

[ad]

1. Celeste’s Accident (Skyline Drive, just west of Mar Vista Drive, Monterey) – In the episode’s opener, Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman) gets into an Ambien- induced accident on a tree-lined span of Skyline Drive in Monterey and has to be rescued by Madeline Martha Mackenzie (Reese Witherspoon).

As they drive away from the accident, Celeste and Madeline run into Bonnie, out for an early morning hike, on Skyline Road, a bit north of where it intersects with Shepherds Place.

2. Gordon’s Arrest (Malibu Country Mart, 3835 Cross Creek Road, Malibu) – Life starts to fall apart for Renata and her husband, Gordon Klein (Jeffrey Nordling), at the top of “Tell-Tale Hearts,” shortly after the two grab a beverage at SunLife Organics juice bar in the Malibu Country Mart.

Screenshot-011716

While walking to their car, drinks in hand, Gordon is approached by the FBI and arrested for securities fraud outside of Kron Chocolatier.  Both shops featured in the segment are situated in the center of the plaza, on Cross Creek Road in between Civic Center Way and the Pacific Coast Highway – though it took me a beat to figure that out.  The Country Mart bears such an uncanny resemblance to Monterey’s Del Monte Shopping Center that at first blush I was convinced the shoot had taken place on the Central Coast.  It was not until I took a closer look that I realized filming actually occurred in the ‘Bu.

Screenshot-011657

3. Celeste’s House (40 Yankee Point Drive, Carmel) The gorgeous home where Celeste lives, featured throughout both Seasons 1 and 2, is an actual Monterey residence.  In “Tell-Tale Hearts,” the front of the property, garage, driveway, kitchen, dining room, rear patio and living room all appear.

Screenshot-011713

4. Monterey Bay Aquarium (886 Cannery Row, Monterey) – While on their lunch break at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Corey Brockfield (Douglas Smith) asks Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley) out on a “practice date.”  Spoiler – she shuts him down due to the fact that he is “very strange.”  [Couldn’t agree more, Jane!  Bring back Tom (Joseph Cross)!]  Per the aquatic museum’s website, one of the facility’s actual employee lounges was used for the scene.

Screenshot-011701

5. Gordon’s Jail (Spring Street Courthouse, 312 North Spring Street, downtown Los Angeles) Renata visits Gordon in jail, gets held up by a metal detector, spews some choice epithets at a security guard, and famously proclaims “I will not NOT be rich!” at downtown L.A.’s Spring Street Courthouse.

Screenshot-011659

Comically, while the scene was supposed to take place in Monterey, a sign reading “Los A . . . “ (I can only assume the rest of it spells out “ngeles”), is visible in the background, giving away the site’s true location.

Screenshot-011726

Gordon’s hearing is also held at the Spring Street Courthouse later in the episode.

Screenshot-011709

6. Liberation Yoga (124 South La Brea Avenue, Hancock Park) – Bonnie receives a surprise – and unwelcome – visit from her mother, Elizabeth Howard (Crystal Fox), at the supposed Monterey-area yoga studio she owns.  Filming actually took place in Hancock Park, at Liberation Yoga, the same spot used as Bonnie’s studio in Season 1.

Screenshot-011661

7. Bonnie and Nathan’s House (636 Crater Camp Drive, Calabasas) – Bonnie and Nathan Carlson (James Tupper) argue about Elizabeth’s stay in the backyard of their supposed Central Coast home, which, in reality, can be found a good 300 miles south of Monterey in Calabasas.  The same idyllic spot also portrayed the couple’s residence in Season 1.

Screenshot-011705

8. Café Descanso (Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge – Renata spills the tea about her money troubles to Madeline at Café Descanso, the women’s regular Season 2 hangout.

Nathan also challenges Ed Mackenzie (Adam Scott) to a fight at the eatery, which is located on the grounds of Descanso Gardens, later in the episode.  You can read an in-depth post I wrote on the location here.

Screenshot-011708

9. Otter Bay Elementary School (Kenter Canyon Elementary School, 645 North Kenter Avenue, Brentwood) – Kenter Canyon Elementary pops up as Otter Bay, the school attended by the Monterey 5’s children, in virtually every episode of Season 1 and 2.  In “Tell-Tale Hearts,” the facility’s front entrance, a classroom and main quad all appear.

Screenshot-011707

10. Bonnie and Elizabeth’s Hike (Old Coast Road, south of Bixby Creek Bridge, Big Sur) – Elizabeth attempts to have a heart-to-heart with Bonnie on a majestic wooded stretch of Old Coast Road in Big Sur.  The absolutely magical spot is also where Bonnie runs in episode 1, “What Have They Done?”

Screenshot-011663

11. Celeste and Perry’s Date Flashback (Melrose Umbrella Co., 7465 Melrose Avenue, Fairfax) – In “Tell-Tale Hearts,” a grieving Celeste reminisces about happier times with Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgård), more specifically one of their early dates in which they discuss their families.  Though virtually none of the date restaurant can be seen, the tiered booth edge visible behind Celeste is a giveaway that the segment was shot at Melrose Umbrella Co.

Screenshot-011727

12. Madeline and Ed’s House (30760 Broad Beach Road, Malibu) – The Cape Cod-style residence where Madeline and Ed live makes its first Season 2 appearance in “Tell-Tale Hearts.”  Interestingly, the locale is a mash-up of a couple different places.  The interior and backyard are part of a sprawling Malibu retreat, which you, too, can call home!  Well, for a night or two, at least – the property operates as a vacation rental in real life.  (I wrote a full-length post on it here.)  The front of the house (seen in “She Knows,” as well as a few S1 episodes) is on the Central Coast at 2830 14th Avenue in Carmel.

Screenshot-011717

13. Jane’s Apartment (Ocean Harbor, 125 Surf Way, Monterey) – Jane tells Ziggy Chapman (Iain Armitage) the truth about his father and later invites Celeste and the twins, Josh (Cameron Crovetti) and Max (Nicholas Crovetti), over for a family gettogether at her new Ocean Harbor apartment in “Tell-Tale Hearts.”  Only the interior of the space (which I believe was a set) appears in the episode.  The exterior of the complex is not shown until episode 3, “The End of the World.”

Screenshot-011718

14. Blissful Drip Café (Lovers Point Park, 631 Ocean View Boulevard, Pacific Grove) – Jane and Celeste meet to discuss the newfound complications of their children’s relationship at Blissful Drip Café, which, along with Café Descanso, serves as a regular hangout in Season 2.  As I documented here, the open air coffee shop is not a real place, but was a temporary set constructed solely for the series at Lovers Point Park.

Screenshot-011712

15. Renata Ditches Gordon (General Jim Moore Boulevard, Seaside)  – In what has to be my favorite scene from the season, Renata blows her top at Gordon while driving him home from prison and winds up leaving him by the side of a hilly, lush road, her hand lifted through the sunroof in a not-so-subtle gesture.  The hilarious segment (which you can watch here – warning, it is definitely NSFW!) was lensed on General Jim Moore Boulevard, slightly north of Hilby Road, in Seaside.

Screenshot-011669

Be sure to check back Friday for locales from episode 3, “The End of the World.”

Seaside Coffee Shop from “Big Little Lies”

Screenshot-011552

My favorite filming location find from this season of Big Little Lies isn’t actually a filming location at all!  Back on March 19th, 2018, shortly after shooting of S2 commenced, Reese Witherspoon posted an Instagram photo of herself sitting in front of the supposed Central Coast-area Seaside Coffee Shop with costar Laura Dern, captioning, “Watch out, Monterey, here we come!  #BLL2.”  Being that it was pretty much the first image of the season to be released, it naturally sent fans’ tongues wagging.  I, for one, was practically drooling with anticipation upon seeing it!  I also, of course, wanted to know exactly where the pic had been taken.  I assumed (correctly) that Seaside Coffee Shop was not an actual eatery, but a mocked-up storefront.  Because the series utilizes both the Central Coast and Southern California, though, I had no idea where to even begin looking.  Figuring (incorrectly) that the café would appear in a scene during the upcoming season and I’d be better able to track it down then, I put my quest on the back burner.  While it never did pop up onscreen, I was, thankfully, able to ID it anyway.  If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times – stalking begets stalking!  The morning after the premiere, titled “What Have They Done?”, aired, I went on the hunt for its locations and quickly pinpointed the real estate office where Madeline Martha Mackenzie (Witherspoon) works as the Deasy Penner Podley brokerage firm situated on the bottom floor of Hotel Shirley in Sierra Madre.  It was the coloring of the building that I recognized and, as soon as I did, a lightbulb went off in my head as I realized that Seaside Coffee Shop could be found in the same spot!

[ad]

While Hotel Shirley’s northern street-level storefront (on the left-hand side below) portrayed Madeline’s real estate office (as denoted in this post), Seaside Coffee Shop was erected next door in the southern unit.

During my stalk of both locales back in late June, I asked the incredibly friendly Deasy Penner Podley agents about the Seaside Coffee Shop set (which they were shocked I had identified).  They informed me that at the time of the Big Little Lies shoot, the space was vacant and that they believed it was not utilized for any filming, but created solely for the background of the various scenes taking place at Madeline’s office.  Aside from Reese’s Instagram (and Laura Dern’s), though, the place was never seen – in the background or otherwise – so I guess whatever was shot in its vicinity wound up on the cutting room floor.

Today, the storefront is home to Capelli Court Salon.

It is a shame that it never appeared onscreen because the charming little shop would have been a welcome addition to the rather lackluster landscape of Season 2.

Reese did post a second image taken at the locale to Instagram on June 10 of this year, the day after “What Have They Done?” aired, saying “Pull up a chair!  Let’s spill some #BLL tea from last night’s premiere!”, so I guess she found it pretty picturesque, too.

Screenshot-011551

Even though Seaside Coffee Shop was never used for a scene, I was thrilled to finally be able to ID and stalk it!

Seaside Coffee Shop Big Little Lies 2

The fictional café was created in the Capelli Court space’s northern window.

Seaside Coffee Shop from Big Little Lies (2 of 21)

To complete the look, the site was dressed with signage, curtains, flowers in the window planter, and a bistro set.

Seaside Coffee Shop from Big Little Lies (20 of 21)

I was ecstatic to discover a table and chairs set up on the sidewalk a stone’s throw away from Capelli Court’s exterior when I showed up to stalk the place.  While the table was too heavy for me to move into position, I did pull one of the chairs over to pose à la Reese.

Seaside Coffee Shop Big Little Lies 3

Even without the chair and other café adornments, though, the locale is still extremely recognizable – a little slice of Monterey right here in L.A. for BLL fans to enjoy!

Seaside Coffee Shop Big Little Lies

The interior of the Capelli Court site was utilized by another HBO series, as well.  In the Season 1 episode of Camping titled “Going to Town,” which aired in 2018, Jandice (Juliette Lewis) and Miguel (Arturo Del Puerto) shop for a ring at a fictional antique store the production created in the then-vacant space.

Though the front of the shop did not appear in the episode, the rear entrance could briefly be seen.

Until next time, Happy Stalking!  Smile

Stalk It: The fictional Seaside Coffee Shop from Big Little Lies was created in the storefront that now houses Capelli Court Salon at 26 North Baldwin Avenue in Sierra Madre.  Deasy Penner Podley, aka Madeline’s real estate office from the show, is next door at 30 North Baldwin Avenue.   Several other sites from Season 2 can be found on the same block including the Starbucks at 1 Kersting Court, where Tori Bachman (Sarah Sokolovic) propositioned Ed Mackenzie (Adam Scott) in “The Bad Mother” and where Renata Klein (Dern) lashed out at Mary Louise Wright (Meryl Streep) in “I Want to Know”, and Mother Moo Creamery  at 17 Kersting Court, where Madeline threw an ice cream cone at Mary Louise in a scene that was ultimately cut.
